This may not be the reason Weezer does it though, it could be that this is what best matches his voice or the way in which they learned to play. Also instance is Johnny from the Goo Goo Dolls is self taught and didn't learn to propery tune his guitar so he learn'ed to play with very strange fingering and also he changes out his second sting to a heavier one( a fourth string I think)

Well for the intro portion of this song I use economy picking. Basically I follow the flow of the pick instead of forcing myself to alternate.

So the notes that you pick in the beginning and my strumming pattern are: (D= downstroke U=Upstroke)

3 1 0 2 1 0 5 0 0 0 0 0

D D U U D U U D U U D U

Thats the technique I use. I think that's what you were asking. Unless you're asking something else, in which case I guess I totally missed the point.

In the video I play it in standard tuning, but my friend told me that the actual song is played a half-step down.

I just use the highest rated tabs on Ultimate-Guitar (I'd link you, but the site doesn't let me post links for some reason).

The only difference between that tab and my version is that I play the full chords during the verse and not just the power chords.

So Full C, Full G, Full Am, Full F.

Not bad but you need to learn some music appreciation, I bet you can't even read music, just tab. Weezer as well as a lot of other rock is tunned down a half step it helps with bending and things like that due to the lower tension on the strings. Also many people tune there 12 strings down a full step to help from getting a warped neck. Then capo up to play.

well, I haven't learned to read sheet music for guitar yet, I can for piano however. Most of the bands I listen to don't tune their instruments down a half step, but that's interesting.

I see somebody took offence to what I said, as they always do. I just want to say you play his song well and I wasn't trying to critisize you in any way. Also if you can read for the piano you could read for the guitar with only a bit of practice. I checked and this song is tuned down another example is "About a Girl" by Nirvana.

I didn't say anything abot him not appreciating music I said "music apprecation" as in the term for understanding the music, the the theory behind it. And no Tab isn't the replacement of sandard notation it's a simplified system for notation of guitar. Yes in some ways it is better as it can note exactly the piece to be played so I agree we all should learn it. However when it comes to notation for the perposes of band with different types of instruments it is neccesary for a standard notation.

And as he says he can read music for the piano it would not take long to also read for a guitar. This would have the effect of him being able to play a piano piece on the guitar by dirrectly reading the piano sheets and knowing for instance that the note to be played is a low E without having to see that this is actually the 6th string played open.

P.S. I think he plays this song well.

Yeah I recorded it on my macbook pro, but I thought the sound and video quality would be better. For some reason the little flashes show up on youtube but not on the video on my computer.
