Thanks for the question! Blaze was just a regular old pet store goldfish. Any kind of fish can be trained! I've heard though, that fish that are bigger / older are generally easier to train.
@magicmanaic888 The pink part is the part of the wand that holds the food. You stick the food in there and then when you push on the top of the wand, the pink part pops back out, releasing the food.
@magicmanaic888 The hoop came with the R2 fish school package. The R2 fish school kit is a great deal-- it includes a feeding wand, props for a variety of tricks, and instruction booklet and an instructional DVD.
@vaimoanaeves just google R2 fish school. They sell the kit for about $30. It includes the feeding wand, the props for the tricks, written instructions, as well as a DVD that explains how to teach about a dozen tricks. Mary
@littlelauren971 You'll have better success if you train your goldfish one at a time, although I do know of people who have trained multiple goldfish at a time. You can always buy an inexpensive tank divider at the pet store to separate your fish during training time.
I am not sure about Danios, I have never owned any of them.
can you make a wand or a hoop what materials would you use to make it I got a cichlid and he cool but I what him to be fun. what would u need to make one of these wands or hoops. Drew whats to know too make the fishies go, =)
@Shinbunto Not sure how you would go about making your own want. As I told a previous person who left a comment, if you google R2 Fish School, they sell the wands for $13 (last time I checked).
They also sell a training kit that comes with a DVD and items for tricks (hoop, basket ball goal, etc.) The hoop and other items for tricks could easily be made out of pieces of plastic and plastic tubing.
I think the wand looks like a net, so many fish are afraid at first.
A few suggestions
Try leaving wand in there for a day or so.
Feed the fish without the wand, but have the wand in the tank at the same time. Hold the wand just under the surface, and feed the fish a pellet away from the wand. Gradually decrease the distance between wand and food, until you can start feeding pellets from the wand. Hope that works. If you need more help, we have a fish training google group.
dude i trained a gold fish to go threw a hoop without a wand when i put the hoop in it swims threw it and comes to the surface for food in only 20 mins
Brilliant! Does this have to be 10 consecutive training days, or might it be as wel, like, 10 days over ten weeks spread? I would love to be able to teach my fish new tricks, but I'm afraid I won't have enough time to do so! What do you recommend?
Training does not have to occur over consecutive days. However, it might be easier for you to be consistent & remember what you are doing if train on a consistent basis.
Training doesn't take much time, I would use Blaze's food for the day for training. Start by teaching the fish to follow the feeding wand, after that it's easy to teach the fish to swim through the hoop. When I was training Blaze I would train in 5-10 minute sessions several times a week.
question...have you been able to introduce cues for individual tricks aside from pointing the target at the object you want the fish to interact with?
Iam dabbling with the idea teaching behaviors with target, like shown here, and then transfering the cues to som'thing visual outside the tank, like maybe photos of simple shapes....I'd like to keep my arm out of the tank as Iam dealing with a deeper tank and larger subject :)
Whether its fun or enjoyable, you're right, I'm not exactly sure.
However, it does make his life more interesting. It's enrichment, such as most modern zoos do. Life is more stimulating if you have to look for or work for your food.
Most fish live in small tanks and have pretty boring lives. He's got a 30 gallon tank and personalized training sessions. I'd like to think he's enjoying life.
It would be interesting if you trained another comet to do the same thing. Then put the two fish together and they can compete like regular athletes. lol. That would be a Guinness Book record to beat all records. :D
Interestingly, it has been done with dolphins. Karen Pryor talks about it in her book "Lads Before the Wind." They trained dolphins to play a soccer-like game and then put them together and let them have at it. Apparently the animals were super competitive and the trainers had to end the game and separate the animals before anyone got hurt.
I think its quite easy on how easy fish reacts to the master. Like all fishes they react anything that has light yes even sharks. The R2 fishing gear has a stick which illuminate lights flashing through the fishes eyes making it think its food or something interesting. For example the angler fish has an antanne which attracts its prey with a whtie light.
That fish learn faster than most students in my school

I don't think they do those tricks because it's fun. They do it to get fed. Too bad.
But it does show people that fish are SMART.
