now in a lot of music events in my country (lithuania) their short movies are being showed, and gosh, that is amazing.. in tune with chill, psychotrance, drum music it creates such mysterious feelings.. you just sit and turn yourself off.. amazing..
Im quite new to the Quay brothers-phenomona could someone please tell me what the film with the bunny cleaning his teeth in this clip is from? Those particular scenes looked great!
The brothers quay are literally insane. They spent years being recluse shut-ins, only eachother other and their dolls for company. They used to make their films from home, then send them out, would never leave the house or meet other people. After several years they agreed to be interviewd (not this one obviously, im talking about years ago), and they are insane. My photography tutor interviewd them a couple of years ago, they kept finishing eachothers sentances and never blinked aparently lol.
Pere Ubu is presenting Ubu Roi at Southbank Centre on the 24 & 25th of April. The performance features the stop-motion animation, projections and stage design by The Brothers Quay! A great opportunity to see their talent on a stage.
That was really interesting, i liked what they said about music being the blood, and like a dialog in a different language.
I am an animator, and thats the way i feel about the music - i use no spoken script at all.I like the image of it being like blood..flowing through the body of the film, giving it life.
Godbless these two, their incredible! They clearly have the best relationship that a duet of artists can have because they are twins. I love them, and their work is an undying inspiration. Long Live the Brothers Quay.
These guys are such geniuses. An entire generation of aesthetic, based on the oddball work of two eccentric twins. Dave McKean, every ridiculous album cover & video from the 90's- nothing ever came close to these two.
And just LOOK at them! They should be on Good Morning America if they ever needed someone to announce the Apocalypse. ;)
Yeah, I try to do all that I can to spread the name of these guys. It's a shame how few people have actually heard of these geniuses. I'm sure they get satisfaction in knowing that their brain children have given birth to an entire art culture.
die sind zehr interresant aber etwas fehlt manchmal.. aber die versuch uber ihr arbeit zu sprechen ist nicht eine gute idee... uber was mann kann nicht sagen "muss mann schweigen"
I always think the only similarities between Quay and Svankmajer are the audio/video editing styles that are so precise. Using puppets isn't really that unique in stop frame animation. What else campares them do you think?
they're open about their admiration for Svankmajer...they even did a piece dedicated to him.... but it sounds like you're trying to minimize their originality and i think that's a mistake. their work is pure genius.
does anyone know what song is playing in the beginning/during the interview? i've searched for it since i saw this extra on the institute benjamenta dvd, but i can't find it..
Thanks for posting this. How old is the interview? Great music bed. Kind of some ethereal, up-to-date Cocteau Twins. Good stuff. First time I've heard them speak. The Quay brothers are brilliant.
Their movies are very gothic and sinister.

They are so interesting to listen to. It's like they exist in another realm... they are living, breathing embodiments of their films.

these guys have creative minds.
they make films that seem to have a stigma, but to some who understand...its as beautiful as a sunset or a drive through the mountains. i love it.

I'm a big fan of their work- but why the pretentious accents? They're from Pennsylvania for god's sakes!

Adam Jones influence? Anyone, Anyone?
Thecorrectopinion 4 years ago
The Tool Video was a literal Aping of a style they'd already been winning awards for years ahead of Adam Jones.
He's good- but they came first.
Djomigod 4 years ago
Yeah that's what I was hinting at, that these guys are an influence on Adam's work. I'm well aware that these guys were around first.

The Street of Crocodiles is my favorite. Not only is the music creepy, but the video is too. I love how they use meat in a lot of their art.
