I can't claim much familiarity with Goju Ryu other than having seen the name, but am impressed with these techniques - simple, direct, practical, and absent both risky acrobatic moves and techniques suited to an counter an attack only so long as it's delivered "just so", in a precisely predefined way.
Dear sirs: I am happy to have discovered your series of goju ryu techniques. I train the same style in NY and am closing in on my first black belt. I am always happy to see how "pure" goju ryu has been preserved - your techniques and katas look just like ours...hardly a variation. Your applications are practical and helpful to me. Keep up the good posts!
i would like to know some techniques to use against a boxer because where i live alot of tough guys use boxing.i was going to go pro in boxing but got bored of the same vigerous training now i do goju and i feel it changed my life.it helped me stop weed/cigeretts/my anger issues.im still learning but would love some techniques to avoid the-uppercut-body shots-overall speed.thanks
I couldn't advise on what you should do wemolaski. I don't know you or your capabilities, your skill level or your fitness. The only thing I would say is, don't try and fight a boxer like a boxer. Take them out of their comfort zone and into yours. That's all I have to say, mate. :-)
@wemolaski interesting that depends al on angle and which hand the opponent is using , is fts lets say straight forward an he is using his back hand {power hand right} , as soon as u realize its an upper cut, step in an grap his fist while in his camber area after that u can elbow him with the other hand or some knees, now these are high level moves probably would only be able to pull them of when u learn high level techniques, which would mean ur timing ought t be impecable to.
@wemolaski At distance kick his leg and in close combat bring him on the ground or try a choke. karate is not just kick and punch it,s a complete fighting system .. i hope it help :)
Thanks marikill.I see you like riding.Last June I went to the TX Ranch in Montana, you'd have loved it.I met a couple of Norwegian girls from Stavanger. If you put TX Ranch in SEARCH you'll see some videos of it.Where do you train in Norway?
It looks lovely at TX Ranch, I want too go there...
I train karate in a small town called Holmestrand, my sensei is Rune Forsberg Hansen and Geir Andersen. They are the most great people I have ever met. Yesterday was my last lesson, since I am going in to the army next week. But I will be back again when I am finish there.
Maybe you notice, that kata is against the air. It covers different kinds of attacks with the same motions.
Often things are symbolized.
So with an attacker, you have to adapt. If you don't train the adaptions based on what is writen into your body mechanics through kata, you miss almost the whole thing.
Thats because you're not really supposed to. One of the reasons kata is practiced in low stances and slightly exagerated form, is that when your pumped up and a little scared (I.E. you're about to fight), the natural subconcious human response is to stand up taller to appear bigger. Practicing low limits this affect so rather than going from knees slightly bent to lock legged, you'll go from knees very bent to knees slightly bent. You'll be way better off, trust me. Haha.
No, I'm not a member of the IOGKF, my Sensei is a member of the Dai Nippon Butokukai, although he didn't put his whole school under that orgainization. About the Miyagi Festival, I had no idea about it. Around the end of April I'll be competing in a Intra-dojo tournament.
Almost forgot. If you want to know more on my style of Okinawa kenpo, look up Grandmaster Odo on the internet. He's no longer alive, he dies a few years back but looking him up should give you some information.
Hi yahooman64.I tried to answer you about a week ago but obviously it didn't get through, don't know why! Well,in England to "pack it in" means to stop what you're doing.
What's up man. Great Video. I practice the style of Okinawa kenpo. Is Goju Ryu similar to my style....well except for the katas, they are totally different. In my system we have the Nihanchi katas and pinan katas along with others seisan, passai, chinto, gojushiho ichi and ni etc. I no longer do karate anymore but I did get to 1st degree black belt in my style.
Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry, I haven't come across your style. But if it's
from Okinawa then there are sure to be similarities. It looks like an amalgamation of parts from different styles according to the katas you mention. Why did you pack it in?
hi, I'm really impressed by your skills in your demonstration! There is a goju ryu dojo around the area i live, and I'm quite keen to start training there, but may i just ask if there are many grappling techniques in goju ryu? because i want to be able to control the opponent as well as being able to knock them over. :P
Hiya minjis2,I take it you don't mean groundwork type grappling? Yes, they are all in the katas as is everything else. They aren't obvious but your Sensei should know. With due respect,if you're just starting training then you may not know what to look for.You may see some on our other vids.Hmmm...come to think of it we may do a vid with more grappling. Cheers
thank you for answering my question!haha and I have looked at most of your videos, it is really inspiring! I was thinking of grappling as in something similar to jujutsu, like arm locks etc, since goju ryu has a "ju" as well :P If you could do a video with more grappling will be a great help for me to understand goju ryu better! Thanks again!
You're welcome, mate. If you are taken to ground our philosophy is get on your feet as fast as possible, using any and all means at your disposal, nothing sophisticated. We work on the assumption that there are always at least 2 attackers, so while you're on the ground you're in danger of getting your head kicked in.There are arm/joint locks and restraining holds in Goju, but don't forget, your job is to get out of trouble, fast, not to enter into "match bouts" on the street. 'Bye
Hiya cassavaeater, what Goju ryu organisation do you belong to?If it's i.o.g.k.f.who is your sensei? Why don't you ask to learn some techniques from him?
I'm Indonesian I learn Karate under the organisation of Gojuryu Shimbukan Indonesia. I learn under our senpei and never thaught about those techniques.
I'll look it up on Google.Ask your senpei to teach you some self-defence bunkai. We have other vids on youtube just put norton dojo in Search & it will take you to them.I don't know what time it is in Indonesia, but here in England it's 1 o'clock in the morning so I'm off to bed. Goodnight cassavaeater
Yoi : After pushing down, one can rotate the hands a little further, grab the neck from above and pull uke straight forward ( if he trys to shoot for ashi dori, one can prevent the advance also ) on all fours.
Then step on one hand, grab the ear on the otner side an strike the side with the pinned hand = end of Gek 1.
You probably no similar ways. Keep posting. Arigato gozaimashita.
If the logo you're refering to is the Fleur de Lys then that's the logo of the Scouts. This is an organisation set up over 100years ago for young boys by Lord Baden-Powell.For more information on that perhaps Google could help you. Cheers

Hi 23rdtry,
Many thanks for your comment.Yes,you could do that.We show A technique, not THE technique.
There are,as you know, many ways of interpreting bunkai. All our 7 videos try to encourage karateka to use their experience,
and/or imagination, and do their own research. The moves are mostly based on "fights" with untrained attackers using(usually)a swinging
punch, the normal attack of a "pub fighter".
But don't assume it's their only method of attack.
