My favorite D.H. Lawrence poem. I've loved it since I was young. I love the verse, " only the deepening blackness darkening still". But does ones physical body have to die to take the "Voyage Of Oblivion"? Can someone, while in this life, go to the very heart of darkness and return during this lifetime? but what materials does one use to build a ship. Not faith, for there is no faith in hopeless eternal night, only a knowing of a man's eternal birthright, at peace with darkness at one with light
Its interesting you mention all of those greek figures in your info. I just got Dantes Inferno today and it mentions them all. Obviously because hes journeying through hell lol, but anyways it interests me how things like that tend to happen. when your thought is fixed on something its like you excessively project it and you notice, say for instance, greek things for me. Excellent work btw.
that's a wonderful poem and a well laid back reading. I think he's also anticipating leading another life after his present one ends..and the little boat with the grave goods might refer to something he had seen - Egyptian, Etruscan?

It's a mixture of transtions to the afterlife, equipped for the journey like an Egyptian, set afloat like a Viking and reincarnated like a Hindu.
Woody Allen said "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying."
What he's desribing is a Boat of Death, but that doesn't have the same ring to it. .
