All of John Williams' compositions are so nostalgic... they bring back those warm, comfy childhood memories. I even think the Olympics theme done by John Williams is beyone epic. Anytime I hear that theme when the Olympics starts up...its like a time machine to ALL the other Summer and Winter Olympics of the past while growing up, that theme stuck with me.

@MyFlamsAreLethal a lot of professional drumset and orchestral percussionists use traditional grip because they were taught that way. both grips r good. some of the best players like weckl and vinnie colaiuta use tradish.
Although I'm not working for TV but for the press, this piece somehow has a special importance for me as a journalist. It always makes me proud because its sound embodies the special importance of bringing the news to the people - and if that work is done with dignity, respect and accuracy (such as by Brian Williams or by the late Walter Cronkite), journalism really can be as great as this marvellous hymn sounds. Superb work, Mr. Williams! Truly the Beethoven of our time!

This is without a doubt quite possibly the most EPIC TV News intro I have ever heard. The rochestra and John Williams are beyond amazing, what a beautiful piece of music. I remember NBC Nightly News watching in stunned silence the evening of 9/11 when they let this closing song play out on national TV the powerful effect it had on me when this was playing and they were showing ground zero on the screen. I will never as long as I live forget this music and that day.
all of the men and women that are laying it are who I credit, the talent it takes for all of them to do that, and the composer too of course, but look at all of them, its about the people ultimately.

To think that all these parts came from the mind of one man. As much as I appreciate good quality musicians, they'd be lost without a great composer/ conductor.
Probably the most amazing piece of work I've heard, by probably the best movie composer I know. What an amazing talent to have - being able to compose music that goes along with a film so perfectly, as if the music was written first and then the movie came! NBC has been using this melody for over 2 decades. Consider that a testament to how appropriate and timeless this song is; you don't replace masterpieces. I wish NBC hadn't replaced the Dateline theme in the mid-2000s though :-(.
JW's music has had a profound impact on my life as a musician. I grew up listening to the Boston Pops and then later on when JW took over. This guy is amazing, his music will live on forever. So much fire and life is in everything he composes. This is an old theme but I sitll love it.

This was the transition from Tom Brokaw to Brian Williams.
It first showed Brokaw about to retire on December 4, 2004. Then, it showed his predecessor Brian Williams about to take the helm the very next day (December 5, 2004).
@Jrharvickfan It is indeed called The Mission, but it was written specific for NBC. They commission Williams to put together a suite of music for their news programs in 1984.

I recognized (I think) Malcolm McNab sitting in the middle of the 3 trumpets, this guy has recorded the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D on trumpet. It is the most incredible thing I ever heard. Pretty obvious that the camera crew knows nothing about which brass instruments are playing at any one time. When breass are featured in the music, they show either the strings or the woodwinds even if their parts cannot be heard.
My fav Williams compositions are 'The Land Race' from Far and Away and 'Cadillac of the Skys' from Empire of the Sun. They bring out the most emotion in me of all of his compositions.
Yes, every composer borrows. So what! These guys are all still brillant. Every composer borrowed from Bernard Herrmann when it comes to suspense/horor. Even BH borrowed from Howard Hanson when he did the score to 'Cape Fear'. John Williams got Star Wars from Ernest Korngold's 1940 film. Superman's "love theme" came from Strauss' 'Death and Transfiguration". On and On and On. Hell, Beethoven took from BACH. Who F@%#ing cares! Enjoy the music for crying out loud.
I first "heard" the NBC Nightly News theme music every night in the days before the Space Shuttle Challenger due to take off. So hopeful and so exciting. Then it also played the night when President Reagan addressed us all after the tragedy saying "We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth' to 'touch the face of God." It will forever wring my heart but thanks for posting it.

Best news theme ever although i did like the Dan Rather theme but its now Katie Couric them which to me is pretty lame.

Past the 3:24 mark
This was the transition from Tom Brokaw to Brian Williams.
It first showed Brokaw about to retire on December 4, 2004. Then, it showed his predecessor Brian Williams about to take the helm the very next day (December 5, 2004).

@Jrharvickfan It is indeed called The Mission, but it was written specific for NBC. They commission Williams to put together a suite of music for their news programs in 1984.

I think this goes to show that tonality is not passé. I recognized (I think) Malcolm McNab sitting in the middle of the 3 trumpets, this guy has recorded the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D on trumpet. It is the most incredible thing I ever heard. Man to be able to get to this level of musicianship what an incredible orchestra, arrangment...............

jkeelsnc I think you are believing the far left that Fox News is part of the far right.The Journalists, and they have great ones, are not. 2 of the commentators are on the right yes, Beck and Hannity, O'Reilly I love because he goes after both sides. SO just because there are 2 sonservatives on the Network doesnt mean its a right wing station. Wise up. I watch Fox News everyday. They either have reps from both sides on at the same time or one right after the other. Stop hating Fox News.

I just wish FOX News would compose a theme music as good as the NBC News theme.
Keep the six-note FOX News music logo, but make the FOX News theme more dignified.

Jrharvickfan, thats true but the news is a talking memo for both extremes. Right Wing Radicals and Liberal Extremists both. Or have you not ignored the talk radio and Fox news enough to realize that both sides push their agendas hard in the news depending on which network you watch.
Fox news is not even journalism. CNN isn't anymore either.

Pretty obvious that the camera crew knows nothing about which brass instruments are playing at any one time. When breass are featured in the music, they show either the strings or the woodwinds even if their parts cannot be heard.

thats not the camera crews falt, thats the editors, they chose the wrong the shots. The crew can only film what they can.

My fav Williams compositions are 'The Land Race' from Far and Away and 'Cadillac of the Skys' from Empire of the Sun. They bring out the most emotion in me of all of his compositions.

Yes, every composer borrows. So what! These guys are all still brillant. Every composer borrowed from Bernard Herrmann when it comes to suspense/horor. Even BH borrowed from Howard Hanson when he did the score to 'Cape Fear'. John Williams got Star Wars from Ernest Korngold's 1940 film. Superman's "love theme" came from Strauss' 'Death and Transfiguration". On and On and On. Hell, Beethoven took from BACH. Who F@%#ing cares! Enjoy the music for crying out loud.

I first "heard" the NBC Nightly News theme music every night in the days before the Space Shuttle Challenger due to take off. So hopeful and so exciting. Then it also played the night when President Reagan addressed us all after the tragedy saying "We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth' to 'touch the face of God." It will forever wring my heart but thanks for posting it.

They all borrow. Gladiator was a variation on the theme of Mars. Celine Dion uses Rachmaninoff without alteration in one of her songs. Maybe they should provide shout outs or something but I still think its brilliant. Elfman, Williams, Zimmer, Horner, Glass...geniuses all.

Speaking of Horner, remember the day Katie Couric left NBC News to be the first sole anchor of a network evening newscast?
Horner composed the theme to the CBS Evening news in 2006, replacing the Dan Rather theme composed by Neal Fox.
Horner did it to compete with the Nightly News theme.
