Though at one point in history the Netherlands split of the HRE and became and independent nation. Then the English called the people from the NL Dutch, because they had the most contact with them. They started using 'German' for the remaining.

"Germany" consists of german states, some of them are as old as netherlands The word "Deutsch" has been around since the time of the Frankish Empire... To the east of the Frankish Empire was "Deutsch" for the overall name of the local tribal languages. It later became Germany.

So- Germans are germans and Dutchs are Dutchs.

We are related but we are separate nations.

They were sepirated after Allemania fall, this fall lead to division of Saxons ( Anglo-Saxons which became the English ), Dutch, Denmarks, Austrians and Swiss folks. And so are the Germans actually French folks ( The Frankish or French kingdom in around 800-1000 ). Became Habsburg later around 1600.

But the Dutch are closest related to Germans (Flemmish and Afrikaners not counted) and Germans are closest to Dutch (Austrians and Swiss not counted).
