Someone posted a music module to the Aminet of this tune years ago, the reproduction was excellent. I don't think it is on the Aminet anymore but I have found it in other places online. Great theme - not seen the film yet!

No. Here "je peins" doesn't come from the modern French verb "peindre" meaning to paint/to depict. It's from the old French "peinir" which has become "punir" = to punish. It has the same latin root as "peine" and "pénal". A related cousin word is the modern French verb "peiner" which means "to cause pain, to sadden.

peiner (infinitive) does not mean punish anyway (it is punir), but to cause pain, and the first person for it would have been je peine (and not je peins).

The correct translation would be "When I depict horse thieves, I don't say it's bad to steal horses. That's the jury's business, not mine".
