oh,i just realized,i know tons of them,and i'm using them over and over again...there is a program called skype in which you can speak to other people and a lot of the people i know there are even speaking like this :D (lol,thx,wb,wtf) really weird ^^
she´s never been in germany, isn´t it ? i´ve never heard that we use such - how does she call that - acronymical.. i think she is a huge Miss_understood^^
interesting observation, there is a funny one: vokuhila (=mullet: vorne kurz hinten lang ^^),
somehow german doesn't invite as much to toy with language as english, maybe because its too complicated and semantically dense, its quite hard to bloviate in german too, we also have few neolisms, to a certain extent its certainly also due to anglosaxon influence as most people simply use english terms, only in the military we basically acronymize everything!
I've never heard these german acronyms. I only know: abFfL Aller beste/r Freund/in für's Leben or: hdsmh(...)dl hab dich super mega hyper (...) doll lieb or: ida ich dich auch ... and some more
Hm dunno, when I chat w/ German folks who don't speak much English at all, there are almost as many acronyms as in English chats, eg consider:
"bd" = bis dann, "gn" = gute Nacht, "kp" = kein Problem ... well, ok there are not SO many. But still enough. ;) And many English acronyms are of course also used in German chats. Whereas in Italian chats I hardly see English ones at all. And the most stupid "acronym" is the Italian "nn" for "non". ;)
In general, Italians heavily use three "shortcuts" in chats (and even letters): nn = non, k = ch (before the letters e and i, makes Italian more phonetic), and x = per. The x originally comes from mathematics, but the homonym is used everywhere as "for" etc. And an example for the K: in chat "ce" = "c'è" = "there is", and "ke" = "che" = "what". (Everyone confused now? *g* )
Oh btw: KP may also mean "kein' Plan" meaning "Ich hab keinen Plan." which in turns means in standard German "Ich habe keine Ahnung." which of course means "I don't know." This stimes leads to confusion in German chats.
My friend the Wik tells me: "Acronyms, initialisms, and alphabetisms are abbreviations that are formed using the initial components in a phrase or name. These components may be individual letters (as in CEO), or syllables or parts of words (as in Benelux)."
I think an acronym is any abbreviation made up of the initial letters of the component words, but often they are constructed so as to form real words (like C.H.I.P. & S.W.A.N.) to make them more catchy and marketable.
An initialism is when the initial letters of words in a phrase are used;
An alphabetism is an initialism spoken as separate letters (e.g. "USA");
An acronym is an initialism which can be pronounced as a word (e.g. "NATO").
In practice, the difference hardly matters, so many people use "acronym" for aphabetisms as well. And there are some abbreviations which are hybrids (e.g. "MPEG", pronounced "em-peg"), so the boundaries are quite blurred anyhow.
It was a joke..... But it is interesting because I still remember when I didn´t knew what was FKK. I saw that in the time schedule of the swimming pool after the 21:00 but I din´t pay much attention. Suddenly after 21:00 the life guard told me that I should remove my swimming shorts.. of course I left the place. I would say I am conservative.. danke für die antwort! (I speak spanish by the way. Sorry for any english grammar error..)
if looked at from the perspective of "internet acronyms", like you did. one of the most used ones is probably "DAU". commonly used to describe the most stupid computer-user you can expect to encounter ;)
Genau wie man unter DAU nicht mehr unbedingt das ursprüngliche "Digital-Analog-Umwandler" versteht. Zumindest nicht mehr in unseren Netizen-Breitengraden.
Well, we have a lot of acronyms in Germany... check out the song MFG by Die Fantastischen Vier, for a few examples ;-) . For all the missing acronyms we are used to use the english acronyms. Isn't that even more efficient, than to come up with new ones ;-P ?
But WzT...

Meiner Meinung nach lässt sich über die Effizienz von Abkürzungen streiten, aber deine neuen deutschen Abkürzungen sind einfach genial!:D

i think the most common ones are
hdl -> hab dich lieb
lg -> liebe grüße
hdl can be expanded in many different ways, such as
hdgdl -> hab dich ganz doll lieb
hdgggggggdl
hdsmhdl -> hab dich super mega hyper doll lieb etc.

The military loves to make acronyms! If you search wikipedia for military acronyms, there is a HUGE list. Some of them are pretty funny.

An acronym is when you shorten a phrase by just using the first letters of each word (see discussion below).

Where Acronyms are abbreviations that spell words. Like = 'C.H.I.P.S' & 'S.W.A.N'??
It doesn't really matter to be honest, great videos.

One actually used online bei germans is "hdf" (halt die fresse, which is the equivalent of "stfu"...just without the f-word.
There is also "hdl" (hab dich lieb / love u), which is especially used by girls. It's also variable, for example you could say
"hdgsmdl" (hab dich ganz super mega doll lieb / i love you so very [very, very...] much)
And there are others...that just refuse to come into my mind right no.
elgaron 4 years ago 2
Oh yeah, it totally rules when you read "Federmäppchen" of German girls in school saying "Julia HDGGGDLMAAADGWW!" Still cracks me up.
AericWinter 4 years ago 2
Thanks for commenting on my comment Aeric, I like your channel, keep it going :>
Still I just remembered another one, which is not really an acronym, but sort of:
"stino" (stinknormal / boringly normal),
a term used by fringe-groups to describe "ordninary" people.
Miss V. kills my english...did I really write "bei germans"?
elgaron 4 years ago
You can always sell it as kewl denglisch slang, right? (c;
Stino, yes. I think those sort of abbreviations are typically German. Just like Vokuhila.
And thx, btw.
