He did not die. He is a machine and like all machines he can be rebuilt and function once again. As seen at the end of the game Smithy and some of his minions were repaired but the gang suffered such a massive loss of power that they were forced to surrender. If Smithy is planning revenge odds are it is going to take a while to rebuild his now critically damaged empire.

@marioman3027 I think they just completely lost them, Geno does not exist anymore, he and Smithy will NEVER be in any new games. Luckily, Geno's copyright MAY have not been lost, but Mallow and Smithy are gone. Geno made an appearance in Mario and Luigi SS, for 43 seconds, but they may have lost his copyright afterwards.

Smithy was by far one of the biggest baddies Mario and the gang have ever faced. He was the first to transcend the Mario vs Bowser cycle. He was very mysterious as to his motives, where he came from and he was even a bit mysterious to if he "really" died. As well, he is still one of the most recognizable bosses from any Mario game, despite being less known than others.

So I think I speak for all of us when I say: WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T YOU BROUGHT SMITHY BACK, NINTENDO?!

Super Mario RPG was the last game made in the agreement between Square and Nintendo. Mario and the others belong to Nintendo, but I believe Geno, Mallow, Smithy, and all other story characters not seen in other Mario games, belong to Square.
