Im thinking we need to have something like a grade system where bands like Avenged Sevenfold are something like Grade C or Grade D Metal, and bands like the Big Four (and any metal bands from the great 80's 90's era of Metal) will be Grade A Metal and any metal band that is closer to the original Metal sounds from the 80's - 90's Metal genres such as Thrash and Death and all things metal will be graded Grade B Metal and since these HardCore groups think they're Metal they be graded Grade C Metal

All you dudes, arguing who's better between Metallica, ACDC, and Symphony X, are all spinning your wheels. Obviously Symphony X is more talented than both bands. Most Prog bands are. Metallica and ACDC are a different genre, and focused more towards mainstream metal/hard rock. That doesn't make them worse, just different. The normal person doesn't have the patience or understanding for Progressive Rock. This type of music appeals to creative, talented, musicians and fans.

If you like metal you shouldn't compare bands; because they CAN' T BE COMPARED. For example, can you compare A7x with Dimmu Borgir? They are both metal tracks but the one is nu-metal and the other is black metal. Only Chuck Norris can compare these two songs, that's how it goes.

All bands are influenced from something or other. Usually influences on a band are their own favorite bands that came before them. So really, it is hard to determine if one band is better than another if one band is being compared to its predecessor.
Really mostly band rating is personal opinion, but yes, some bands just suck (not symphony x though). You can base quality on aesthetic appeal (but only to yourself), the relation to the current world culture, the charm of the melody and tempo, etc.

(Only Led Zeppelin have sold more) But indeed it is like the "pop" of hard rock cause it is simple, straight and easy and features "Fotball cheering lines " such as the Highway to Hell chorus. Symphony X is a TOTALLY different story! The MUSICIANS of S X runs in circles around AC/DC and most other Heavy Metal bands. Hence the term progressive..

@MrSweeetnesss I wasn't referring to the band's playing ability, I was referring to the song itself. Even if the band can't play live, the recorded version still sounds incredible, as long as you can overlook the lack of symbolic meaning behind "cheating" to make the song sound good.
Also, I was referring just as much to the songs' influence on the genre as how good they sound. Sorry for not emphasizing that, but youtube's comment word limit does make thing difficult in that regard.
