The A340s were great. Very efficient...just that the new 777s are even more efficient. They knew they're going to be using the new 777s in the long run so they might as well get rid of the a340s to reduce the # of aircraft types in their fleet. Instead of having 2 A340-500s and a few A340-300s, they chose to operate a bunch of new 777s. This not only makes crew training, maintenance, etc much easier, but also cost is lower. Also keep in mind that A340s use 4 engines while the 777s use 2.

@TheDinger2799 no, they were smart, the A340 burns more fuel than the B777 and they both can do the same flights. no point in keeping the A340s
