The relative motion of the Sea Shepherd (Steve Irwin) video making vessel makes it look like the opposite is happening but this is purely an optical illusion based on the forward motion of the Steve Irwin.

The other angle (many you tube videos show it) clearly show that the Shonan Maru makes a hard Starboard turn into the AG. On most posts showing the other angle, its around second 7 or so. To lunalovegoodlvr's point - the ship leans opposite to the turn very clearly as they are turning to ram the SS. They only make a hard port turn after contact. Also, the videos also show that the AG had idling engines - but was dead in the water which gives them maritime right of way. SS's were rammed.

Since we know the rail is curved we should focus on the water surface and the Ady Gil. This footage clearly shows the Ady Gill turning into the less maneuverable vessel and adding throttle at the last moment. The collision was intentional. The crew of the Ady Gil is at fault.

The Ady Gil definitely added just enough power (with rudder set dead ahead) in the final moments to put herself in front of the whaling vessel. If she had added that same power with wheel turned hard to starboard she would have easily avoided the whaling vessel. If she had gone to full throttle instead of a little power she would also have avoided.

The larger whaling vessel was holding speed and course as required by maritime law.
