Yeah it does look like overkill, but it seems to be more of a workaround to create the same effect as a Broncolor Parabolic reflector at a fraction of the cost. With this setup , he probably get more depth ( 3d ) and enough light to shoot with an 8 x 10 at a respectible action freezing shutter speed. Theres always a reason behind the madness :-)

But I agree , where are the leaping white tigers. Advertising photos need impact.

if you had the budget and the client was Chanel, Rimmel, Gucci et al this is what they would expect. i say there are not enough flash heads! and where's the backlight, haze machine & wind generator? fuck it, there should be a few white tigers leaping past the camera in front of the model!
