great tutorial! thanks alot, this was a very clearly thought out and well performed tutorial. Now my understanding for how artists produce graphics for 3d worlds have grown. When the basics are clear the fun part begins, trying out modifiers and shadows .. keep up the brilliant work
Is there a use for baking other than games? For example I was thinking that you could bake AO into a mapped texture and then you could use it in an animation seeing AO but with a much faster render time since AO only needs to be done once?
lol thats an excellent use dude... that way you could also choose the objects that you want to ao... the only problem would be that you would only get the AO from where they were at the beginning... I.e if they are standing next to a pole they will have a pole shaped shadow on them. but if you did it with the character in mid air it could look pretty cool.
hmm... well in the shaders pannel under materials click the "TexFace " button and that might fix it... it could also be because you don't haev enough lights
I started to make Blender models for a time back but I have still not got into the texturing parts. right now have all the models a texture made by "Vertex Paint" and I view it in the Textured mode. How can I print out this to a flat 2D texture and edit it in another program like Photoshop? and then add it back in...
...i haven't done much with vertex paint but first you will need to uv unwrap the model(watch the character modeling/ textureing tutorials) and then watch the one about "bakeing" those should help to answer your questions
that was an awesome tutorial. It makes light mapping a breeze! I think the only thing I would change is using multi-texturing for the Game Engine so you aren't using those huge textures. you can have the colour on one UV map and a light map on a different one.
Still great tutorial, I love how you explain why I would want to bake textures in the very first line. It gives the tutorial an objective and shows you planned it ;)
thanks man. I really would have liked to add that in but I was scared of going overtime and after having to rerecord like 4 times already (because of my step-mum, dog, cold and a really loud airplane) I really didn't want to have to do it again. :)
and im glad that YOU FOUND that little explaination at the start helpful. ;) lol
You need to plan out your video tutorial. In this one half the video goes by with the objects all black. You never do explain why someone would WANT to BAKE a texture. Or even what a texture is.
If you are going to make a tutorial your first question to your self should be. "How can I make this as if I knew absolutely NOTHING about the subject. Then plan it out as if you were going to explain it to someone that knows absolutely nothing.
I did plan the tutorial. right at the start i say that you would do this "so that your materials can be used in the game engine". if i were to explain what a texture is and tell people every single button i pressed i would never be able to do as complex tutorials as i do and it would take me half an and i couldn't upload it to youtube. if you had a problem with a particular part i am always happy to answer questions but i can't make every video for people who have only just got blender.
How do you bake the render on the new Blender?

hey, how do i keep dynamic shadows and lighting?
when i have solid colors, they are effected by lighting etc, if it goes above a lamp, it becomes dark.
how do i keep this?

If you are watching a tutorial on how to bake a texture you should know what a texture is. otherwise it would be wasted on you completely
