I've always loved this video. ESPN's video boffins are second to none, and you could see that they poured their heart and soul into this one. (Thanks also go to ESPN's management for opening the pursestrings to get the song and video clips that ESPN/ABC Sports *didn't* already own!)
It's too bad there wasn't an Emmy category for this to win--except that they'd have had to retire the category afterwards, because nothing would ever match it.
@wisy87 -- the football player @ 4:31 is "Prime Time" Deion Sanders. The basketball player @ 5:01 is Clyde "The Glide" Drexler when he played for U. of Houston ("Phi Slamma Jamma")
nah, Mario and Maris appear for the lyrics: All these lines in my face getting clearer. which is a reference to these athletes who aged visibly while in the public eye. The former due to age, the latter due to stress.
Maravich, Bias, Flo-Jo etc. appear for the lyrics: The past is gone.
Which is a reference to their untimely passings...

I'm not american so naturally never heard of babe ruth..initially i thought a yank was referring to a woman so i googled the name and went to images..its a man!!..a very fat man in pajamas!!..who played baseball (Rounders) the British invented for small children to swing bat and run around bases, i played it aged 8-10 then grew up, its not for grown ups.
And this fat man in pajamas playing a childs activity was voted americas best "sports" man of 20th Century??? Gotta be frickin kidding me???
funny how people make fun of hockey, and its one of the greatest sports ever played and the video even showed no sport ever united a country like hockey did in 1980
Oh my goodness. So damn emotional. They didn't have proper football though, oh well, it was still unreal.

Which is funny, because around his image are athletes that have died...and Mario is still very much alive, 9 years after this video was made by ESPN.

Yeah, there's Len Bias, Pistol Pete, Roberto Clemente, Jim Valvano....and Mario Andretti. Methinks they meant to put Ayrton Senna in there.

The classical song at the beginning of the montage is from the Hoffa Soundtrack by David Newman. The song is "Hoffa: End Credits" - David Newman.
The entire soundtrack can be downloaded online. Message me for the URL as I can't put it as a youtube comment.

he sucks
Loudmouth573 4 years ago
yea. he's in the hall of fame but he sucks. good call.
and even if he did suck, the homerun is still one of baseball's most memorable images.

You can see a small snippet of Fisk at 4:37.
