I wouldn't say McGavin's "MIKE HAMMER" was a "short-lived" series, 'gallery'- two seasons [78 episodes] were produced between 1957 and '59.

Darren McGavin played Carl Kolchak (1974-1975) in a very similar way to Mike Hammer (1958-1959) - the same savvy, fearless, wisecracking investigator, but with a camera in the first and a gun in the second. And if my memory serves (dangerous assumption) he did the same noir-style narration in The Night Stalker that he did in Mike Hammer.

What a treat! I'd read McGavin played Mike Hammer in a short-lived series, but this is the first opportunity I've ever had to actually see him in the role. And yes, wasn't Bain smokin' in those days? Thanks for posting this.
