First time for every thing..long as he improves on it..when i learned we wernt aloud to use the AC..and couldnt use bigger then a 20g..and yeah i agree..clean the blood befor the tagaderm!..and how bout you not cover the whole thing in case you wanna hook a line up to it..just a thought..oh well good stick atleast.
wow...i can put an IV catheter into a puppy while its moving around and trying to get away non stop and not have this much blood come out lol and im still a vet tech student haha
Well atleast they got the 18G IV in terrible job at occulting, not to mention didn't even try cleaning the blood off and the best part is they put the tegaderm over the entire IV!!! They aren't even gonna be able to use it!!! Fortunately it's something you get better at, everyone has to learn. Most people don't can't even get a small iv in when they learn, that was an 18G...not always an easy task.
@bigdogracing1 Oh,ok.Thanks for responding to my question. So let me get this straight...the catheter is just the little nub that you attach the blood tube...i don't know what you call the container that holds the blood?
i dont see anything funny about this, this will be a real person going out to the real world sticking real patients with real health problems..blood is dangerous!!
@imQUEEN01 I'm also a nursing student, in my last semester before I graduate and I agree with you! This person first off is holding the cathlon the wrong way, going at too deep of an angle, didn't pop the tourniquet when he saw a flashback, didn't apply pressure when he pulled the needle out and just let the blood fly. Don't even get me started on how he didn't retract the needle and just swung it around...
@tehcorkie yeah, as soon as i saw him swing the needle around i was like wtf?! In my city, we can't be taught IV insertion until we're employed with a facility and get trained there. Now I see why this is the way it is.. but even without the training, this is just ... *puke*
insert at a 45 degree angle, using one hand, thread the catheter with ur index finger of the same hand ur holding the needle with, i do this shit everyday on a moving ambulance, no worries, takes practice, good insert tho. just careful not to pull it out when connecting tubing or placing a saline/ heparin lock
Yep, when it comes to doing this job and teaching new medics, damn straight Im a tool. The public and the troops deserve the best medics to care for them, period. This shit isnt a game, its real life and death. I wont waste time listing the harmful things that can go wrong when screwing up an IV start. People who actually do this work know where Im comming from. If this is the best the staff and students here can do...... It not good enough. Failing grade, pass me my red pen!
Do I seriously need to explain why this is unprofessional? The joking, carrying on, and lack of supervision during an invasive procedure does'nt speak for itself? Based on my 18 years as a paramedic and 25 years in the Army Reserve (infantry) I can tell you truthfully this is unprofessional. Troops are troops. I don't blame them. The NCO shouting about MRE's and dropping for 25 instead of supervising this is the one I would jack up. This is a real procedure, not a training arm!
@Cdn0069 Why is this so bad? This is how medics train to give IV's. In this video about Navy Corpsman training at 2:06 they're doing the same thing: youtube.com/watch?v=AR50BCff6So&list=FLbBAqgKGjAX2br2QSDeUuqA&feature=mh_lolz
Unprofessional amatures. Where is the instructor / supervising medic?!! All i hear are the typical dumb ass comments in the background. Ive been a paramedic for 18 years, and this is a shit show of the highest order! Professional medics try hard to earn respect from the physicans and the confidence of the public. This bullshit clown job doesnt help us. Thanks for nothing guys! Training time and dollars are so scare nowadays, this is the best these clowns could do? There are no excuses, this is
@Cdn0069 These are soldiers learning the skill and probably doing it for the first time. This isn't a Paramedic class. The stuff you hear in the background is the other soldiers chatting about stuff... just like I'd expect most 18-20 year olds to do. I'm sure they'll get a lot more serious about this later.
The start looked OK. It was a little slow, but that's to be expected when you're first doing them. Occlude the tip with your non-dominant hand so that you limit the blood flow out. Have the lock adapter handy so that you can just reach over with your dominant hand, pop off the TQ, grab the port, and screw it on the hub of the catheter. Once that's done, you'll have plenty of time to put the clear dressing on and secure the site. Otherwise, not bad at all!
@MrSpeak23 Thanks. I remember what it was like starting an IV for the first time and having to learn all the little tricks and hints that make starting an IV a literal 2-drop of blood loss event. And my classmate made me bleed like that too... He turned out to be a fine Paramedic.
A real bad work: are you young...with nice veins.....use small tubes or you loose toon of blood. Do you need a 14-16G needele? move to professional placers.
This happened to me in my medic class because they couldn't occlude my vein. My lab instructors tried to occlude it and they couldn't. It ended up causing me to lose enough blood to cover the entire table and my arm in blood and having the experienced medic saying "shit, shit, shit" as they were trying to occlude the flow. It took one to occlude it, and one to actually take it out. I apparently looked like Casper the ghost.
what the fuck are you guys doing!?! Thats not how you do it! God I almost passed out watching that, I wana feel bad for the poor guy that's bleeding but he seems to be giggling away. Man if that was me I would be screaming my head off. Eww.
THE BAD STICK IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT WILL YOU AS HUMANS OF USA WRITE CONGRESS OR THE MAYOR OR THE GOVERNOR AND STATE YOU WANT TO SEE THE BROKEN NEEDLE COME OUT NOW..... PLEASE HELP ME HELP THOSE IN PAIN RECIEVE THEIR RIGHTFUL COMPENSATIONS
Who's the idiot inserting the IV?? I didn't go to Med School, but even I know that you're supposed to clean it up afterwards, and you're supposed to release the tourniquet before you take the needle out -_-
Not a bad stick, Keeping pressure on the vein closest to the insertion site on the proximal side would not only keep the bleeding to a minimal, but it also holds the catheter in place so you can attach the loc one-handed.
Holy Shit! I mean, he removed the outer tube connecting the needle without even putting a pressure over the insertion site! Gawd! it will DEFINITELY BLEED! For a novice in IV insertion, this is acceptable but if this is done for fun, well, this is stupid. hahaha ! I hope he's not the latter LOL!
@MrGunzilla100 dont be afraid of needles these where just amatures learning how to do this. pros. do not mess up like this. have you ever got your finger pricked to test your blood? well thats hurts more than the needle going in. i promice you.
So if they release the tourquine and just leave the needle in will the blood eventually clog the inside of the needle or will the blood just keep on flowing out until he bleeds to death?
Is it possible to loose most of the bodies blood by doing this?
Idiot. Suppose use your thumb to clamp down on the catheter and the vein to stop the flow of blood out the catheter cuz that 18 gage flows allot especially with that big vein being so close to his artery
Lol, it helps to tamponade off the vein before removing the stylet. No big deal though, just a little blood. At least you got the stick and didn't perf!
I don't think the guy that said they're all laughing understands how long it would take to bleed out from an 18 gauge IV catheter. I'm taking this Combat Medic course right now. Its a military environment. We laugh because training every day is hard and if you're not having fun, you won't learn. And because losing 3 mL of blood isn't gonna kill you.
@theprivatejackson Talk about you and what you are doing Jeremy, when your purpose was to reply on the video's content. Thiiiiiiink. This is a very badly and without background done venipuncture. The examiner does not realize the harm he is doing (though not much) to the patient soldier. I'm sure getting shot in the face is worse, but shoot. thank you for the video — this teaches us not to do this.
almost 100% positive this wasnt a corpsman. the stick was fine, he hit the vein but like below said didnt release the tourniquet and occlude the vein. doesnt help that he wasnt holding pressure near the stick or the vein it looks like
it wasn't really "wrong", he just needed to release the constricting band and occlude the vein.. and f this corpsman, it was prolly this kids 1st or 2nd stick....
@pepperbunny14 If you don't work with IVs, PLEASE tell us how he is doing it wrong? Technique is off yes, but this is probably his only 2nd or 3rd stick OBVIOUSLY. I love to see what you think is wrong since you don't work with them etc...
@lfdlumpy you got me i dont work with IV's, it doesnt mean I have never given one before. My friends dad was dehyderated, and my friend was a paramedic. He taught me how to do IV's, so I had to give him NACL... Got it on my first try
@pepperbunny14 You didn't answer the question. I am just curious what YOU think he did wrong? And ONE IV start WHILE BEING WATCHED you can tell trained people they are doing it wrong? Good job getting it though, some can be tough. But don't say anything until you've tried to start one going down a gravel road, or while having distractions and not in a classroom setting
@pepperbunny14 not everyone did as good as you on your first try for some people it's harder(Dexterity and all that, proper traction and so forth, etc). And yes Normal saline is pretty much what you do for dehydration just salty water haha, don't have to be all technical with NACL wooohoo. Everyone has strong and weak points. Did he have good veins? Watch when you do an old person and you keep blowing veins cause they're so thin then it gets frustrating, or bariatric people gahhh.
Not sure, it's a bit hard to tell given the poor quality of the video. Upon watching it again it does look a bit dark, but it was the spurting that caught my attention, and in the area he's inserting, the vein and artery are in close proximity. In 15 years if nursing and God knows how many IV starts I have never seen a gush if blood like that, and it does appear to be pulsing. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first tine ;)
Fap to this? Check.

I'm sure getting shot in the face is worse, but shoot. thank you for the video — this teaches us not to do this.

almost 100% positive this wasnt a corpsman. the stick was fine, he hit the vein but like below said didnt release the tourniquet and occlude the vein. doesnt help that he wasnt holding pressure near the stick or the vein it looks like
hawaiian88son 4 months ago
it wasn't really "wrong", he just needed to release the constricting band and occlude the vein.. and f this corpsman, it was prolly this kids 1st or 2nd stick....

I may not be a doctor or a medic, but that quite honestly didn't look right.

LOL. Hey, you learn from your mistakes. The stick was good. The technique sucked, but it'll get better with practice.

@rook901 Exactly. People who comment on this, probably don't know what they are talking about. I've done the same thing.

LOL im a health Care assistant, I dont even work with IV's and I know ur doing it wrong... jeeze...
pepperbunny14 4 months ago
@pepperbunny14 If you don't work with IVs, PLEASE tell us how he is doing it wrong? Technique is off yes, but this is probably his only 2nd or 3rd stick OBVIOUSLY. I love to see what you think is wrong since you don't work with them etc...
lfdlumpy 4 months ago
@lfdlumpy you got me i dont work with IV's, it doesnt mean I have never given one before. My friends dad was dehyderated, and my friend was a paramedic. He taught me how to do IV's, so I had to give him NACL... Got it on my first try
pepperbunny14 4 months ago
@pepperbunny14 You didn't answer the question. I am just curious what YOU think he did wrong? And ONE IV start WHILE BEING WATCHED you can tell trained people they are doing it wrong? Good job getting it though, some can be tough. But don't say anything until you've tried to start one going down a gravel road, or while having distractions and not in a classroom setting
lfdlumpy 4 months ago
@pepperbunny14 not everyone did as good as you on your first try for some people it's harder(Dexterity and all that, proper traction and so forth, etc). And yes Normal saline is pretty much what you do for dehydration just salty water haha, don't have to be all technical with NACL wooohoo. Everyone has strong and weak points. Did he have good veins? Watch when you do an old person and you keep blowing veins cause they're so thin then it gets frustrating, or bariatric people gahhh.

I'm a paramedic and...ummm, you guys aren't doing it right. LOL.
