Ok guys here is the real story about the origination of drougue chute on tandems from my experience. Without a drougue the opening shocks were both very hard on the tandem master, passenger and the equipment plus it added stability as an added bonus...
im a newb to this, i have never jumped. but what is the white chute they throw? Is it just a drag chute just to slow the fall and increase time in the air and possibly ease the release of the main?
@dsmdeegen It's called a drogue and it is designed to limit the speed to about 120 mph. A tandem would fall a lot faster without it. Most parachutes are designed to open at 120mph or less. More speed during deployment equals a harder opening shock and possibly damage to the parachute.
@flashvortx limit the speed? Galileo showed that two objects of different masses fall at the same speed. He dropped a one pound and a ten pound cannon ball from the Leaning Tower of Pisa showing the two would hit the ground at the same time. Apollo 15 confirmed it on the moon with a feather and a hammer.
The drogue parachute is more for stabilization to keep the two from tumbling out of control by producing drag.
