  • Obama is like a politician, only worse. When he is not completely ignorant about an issue, he nefariously obfuscates and lies.

  • He can't possibly let his liberal union friends down, now can he?

  • Can I get a voucher to go to Hogwarts?

  • unfortunately a liberal democrat who supports school vouchers is a death sentence if running for office.

  • now that the Republicans brought back the voucher program, they can go back to voting for Obama!

  • I don't know, I'm reading of case after case of taj mahal schools being built, $200-300 million for ONE SCHOOL in CA. Here in UT one for $77 million. They cover dozens of acres, multiple fields, fleets of buses, then seem to forget to pay their teachers. But when we complain about ballooning costs and administration, lack of funds for the true mission of public EDUCATION, its "you want to starve teachers". The kids just seem like a means to an end for public unions, sports biz's and developers.

  • Pretty safe to assume Mr. Obama has lost at least 1 black woman's vote in the DC area - and one more future vote from the young lady.

  • Obama is owned by the unions, he is corrupt. Sorry if you don't feel like he is. You should think with your brain, not your heart.

  • I'd rather have tax money given to kids like these, than throw it year after year at the teachers unions, who have made American students the laughing stock of the world.

In all honesty, why would anyone oppose this?

  • I rather give thousands of my tax $ to a poor family to pay for their kids education, than to OBAMA so he can piss it away to bribe the teachers UNIONs, school administrators, & bureaucrats - & using all their dues(our tax money) to fund the election of more democratic legislators so they can pass more taxes to get more of our money for their incompetence. FUCK YOU OBAMA!

  • As usual black people supporting their own oppressors. Maybe now you wont yell Obama out your window or contribute money you dont have to his campaign. I hate it but Obama is a big govt socialist and this is what you get with big govt socialist. The main reason they dont want the voucher program is because they dont have control and the teachers unions dont have control. Wake Up!!!!!!!

  • Obama is a disgrace to the black community in the US. I don't know why this video doesn't have a few million views.

  • one of the main points of this video is that the ave voucher is 7,500 and the ave public school spending per pupil in 14,000. in you actually watch the video about the real public school spending on YouTube. dc. public school spending is really almost 30,000 a school.

public schools lie about their spending, i know, my childhood was stolen from me in these hell holes while i longed to go to cheaper private schools

  • forget the voucher programs... make ALL schools better by investing in public education. your kids don't need private schools to do better - they need better schools in general.

  • @UBchick33, DC schools already spend around $20 grand per studernt. More money won't fix anything, you need to give PARENTS the power to decide where & how to school their kids. A voucher system does just that.

  • mercedes was going to georgetown prep. another black protestant goes to a catholic school.

    cathlic schools arent catholic

  • I can tell you why Ma'am. Teachers unions.

  • i didn't vote for him 4 years ago and i won't be voting for him again. this man is not for education and he slowly but surely turning this country into a freakin police state.

  • Thank you for sharing this important video. It's too bad that we have a president with a hidden, diabolical agenda. The truth has no agenda..... I'm sharing this....

  • There's nothing i hate than LIBERAL HYPOCRISY!!!

  • its funny asking people why they voted for people. you can literally flush everything he ran on down the toilet

  • HAHAHA. Negroes voted Hussein the oragutan because he was half human half negro and now they are being screwed over. The first thin he did was strip them of the voucher system so they could go to private schools they cant afford and arent menatlly equipped to attend. So his daughters can go to private schools were they won't have to worry about chimpouts, fights, thefts, and rapes that occur on daily bases in negro schools.

  • There is a reason for everything and like in every negative situation what does trust and hope do? Give us a goal to work towards and a light to shine on the darkened road we travel on. I'm glad people are rising up for a good cause and getting the word out here. I wish you the best of luck, especially to the people of DC who obviously need a change in their educational program and community.

  • WTF... I had to yell at my monitor when I heard Obama say it matters if the program works or not.... the voucher program was working.... it was taking good under prevliage kids from crappy schools and puting them where they belong.... and it was working.... Bullshit, it's elite class propaganda is all Obama is.

  • The answer is easy... the ruling elite class need a class of uneducated Serfs who can't see passed their Bull shit and still vote for them, and buy into the whole handouts (AKA welfare) as a right. Wellfare, universal health care is nothing more then a trap to keep people down and dependant on the government... Aka the ruling elite. (And this applies tor both parties, since none of us "peons" are really Rebulicans or Democrates, but Serfs, scum to them).

  • Teacher's unions.

  • Teacher Unions...

Vouchers threaten control... Unfortunately, special interests take priority over children.

  • hey guys just got free amazon voucher from thegiftvouchers . info great site, you should try

  • Fascist Democrats want to keep kids stupid. How ironic that the same Democrats who take money from teachers unions and brag about how great public schools are sending THEIR kids to private schools.

  • @StoogeWatcher Okay, it doesn't have anything to do with whether or not they're Democrat or Republican, it has to do with morbidly rich people keeping anyone who isn't rich stupid, and poor. I can see Republicans doing the same damn thing in the blink of an eye. If you want to point a finger, point it at the megalomaniac rich man.

  • @ZsTARR64 Republicans aren't the ones taking money from teacher's unions. Republicans aren't the ones who brag about how great public schools are while sending THEIR kids to private schools. Republicans aren't the ones kissing up to teachers unions that employ teachers with criminal records that include sexual assault.

  • @StoogeWatcher They would be if they were the ones making money off of it, as both Democrats and Republicans have their corrupt politicians. Anyway, I didn't say it had anything to do with being Republican, it has to do with being greedy. Democrat or not, a good leader does what's best for his country, not for his wallet, and not for his PR.

  • @ZsTARR64 This isn't about the rich keeping kids down, its politicians who want an uneducated public who will vote for them no matter how bad they treat them. It's also about Unions and other special interests who line the pockets of the politicians.

  • Send Sasha and Malia to an inner city school! Obama hates regular Black Americans and even called them a "mongrel race", this hypocrite doesn't care as long as it's not his own kids trapped like rats in a cage.

  • @abe2517 Yup. Obama likes public schools and teachers unions so much he should send HIS daughters to those schools.

  • @abe2517 A "mongrel race"? Seriously? I suspect you do not have a source to back that up. A hat tip to you if you prove me wrong.

  • @darwinkilledgod: Yes he did- on The View of all places in front of millions of Americans.

    /watch?v=ZerO4KZDlBY&feature=related

Shouldn't have called me out homey. Your beef is with Barry O - not me.

  • @abe2517 Well played, abe. Though I should point out that he said "mongrel people" not "mongrel race." Still, /hattip

  • well, mr. president? why?

didn't you used to be for school choice and public education reform? wasn't that what the annenberg project was about?

  • Ahh sadly we have the tea sipping libs (no doubt with their pinky out) who are too stupid to recognize the demise of their own party.

And I hope your kids are doing well in that private school, while you blindly support the teachers union's failures.

  • Obama and the left wingnuts of the Dem party dont want children to grow up to be educated, prosperous, and self reliant because they would be less likely to vote for the Dems. The progressive wing would rather more people to be dependant on the govt. The teachers union is more interested in protecting its power and shaping the young minds to become drones for the govt. That's my wild opinion, I could be wrong, but I could be right.

  • I'll tell you "why"....because Obama's a proven liar and working for very special interests that do not include the majority of Americans.

  • I have a feeling that they're gonna vote democrat for the rest of their life regardless. The Dems will find someway to spin this and blame Republicans instead of the unions.

  • i feel WE could make more drastic cuts in other spots to save programs like this but someting needs to be done about gov spending. i dig "school choice" but i dig CUTTING gov spending more. the young laidy at 2:45 in this vid doesnt need gov to make sure she has an opportunity. it is her job to be a good person, keep at it and keep moving. dont get bogged down now! WE cant wait for obama to fix all the bumps in ower lives. please dont take this the wrong way. (WE= we the people)

  • I totally understand why, from an individual standpoint, for an individual solution, why any parent would want a private prep school for his/her child rather than the neighborhood public school -- particularly in the economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, with inferior education and high crime; but, the voucher system abandons the majority of the kids in the system, relegating them to this inferior program. The problem is the public school system. Let's fix it for everybody's child.

  • When pilot programs work, like vouchers, cut um. When pilot programs fail, like Mass. Health Care, make them nation wide!!! I get it now, I should run for office!

  • Though the program is successful, its not fixing the real issues that remain among the DC school districts

  • But how will vouchers save the public school systems the answer is simple it will not it allow helps a select few

  • Some Black Democrats may not like vouchers, but many more like charters, and even when they don't, if you point out more Black politicians and teachers put their children in private school when compared to the general population, and that Black parents of children in school, when given a chance, choose charters and/or vouchers, there is no disagreement that options should exist.

  • Republicans believe that every American parent reguardless of race, black, white, latino & asian-should have the same option to pull their kids out of the same failing public schools that President Obama has deemed unfit for his own children. That's the real public option! Vote Republican!

  • He picked the unions over America, plain & simple. If you look, everything he has done has been NOT for the people but his special interests.

The little girl at 4:25, she looks so precious but the promises given SHOW they were not made with her in mind. AND to think they have school children singing praises of Obama? Stand up & stand together for the future of our country people. It's not the talk that matters, it's the results.

  • I,m so sorry you wasted your vote on this imbecil .

  • 0bama's Health Care Legislation... Can it help America's populous. . . ? US view's are important! Goto my utube profile page and learn how.

  • Cambell your family looks like a beautiful family GOD bless you, BUT lets get real GOD first no matter what. To depend on our GOVERNMENT is insane. OBAMA serves an unholy spirit. Sorry he is here to destroy AMERICA in these last days. Destroy Family, Children, take our jobs away, our Freedoms. Pls our lord should be first than everything else falls into place. Is everyone blind ObAmA mocks JESUS, and we are to think he cares for Americans??? not.

  • Funny how Obama opposes School Vouchers but supports the new Healthcare reform bill, which is basically a Health Insurance Voucher program.

  • Corruption- many teachers care more about their 180 days off and huge penions than educating kids. Their political clout and sense of entitlement is appaling. Voters need to reject the propaganda and stand against teachers unions.

  • hello, I find some good asos coupons at petacash [DOT] COM

  • Woman voted race, and she lost her daughters school voucher. I don't feel sorry for her. Blacks need the government to take care of them. They can't stand on there own two feet. Oh!, and it's always the white people's fault.

  • FUCK OBAMA. TRICK LOVES THE KIDS.

  • This is one of the biggest reasons to oppose the "public option" in health care reform legislation.

  • This drives me nutsssssss. Why would you destroy a successful program? Are the Unions so afraid of competition? Of course they are. We need more voucher programs in this country, this will bring competition and hopefully a more effective educational experience especially for the poor.

  • The unions want to keep kids in public school for the same reason ranchers want to keep cattle in corrals: that's how they make their money.

  • I simply disagree. The reason the Private Schools do better is because they simply kick out the bulk of the Black male students. That's not education that's Racial Profiling. If those Schools are so special then use the money to pay them to teach the Public Schools how to do it. Sending a few Black kids to a half-baked religious academy is not the answer. Ending Black Self-hatred and White Supremacy is.

  • @papageorgio419 i dont agree with you. voucher programs just stretch the govs arms further.

  • @li4death54 So spending 1/2 the money the normally do per student on an education that doesn't get them Union support stretches the governments arms? I fail to see the reasoning. Could you expound on this?

  • @mckinneykevin Im sorry I dont understand what your ? is. I looked at my posts on this vid and am lost. If you could clarify what you are asking me that would help me express my ressoning.

  • @papageorgio419 come'on seriously? why would government destroy a successful program NOT run by government? then we don't need to rely on government!

EVERY school should have to compete for students...PROVE TO PARENTS THEY ARE THE BEST SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN! and EVERY parent should be given a voucher to send their children to whatever school they choose.

THEN you'll see public schools get off their lazy, tenured asses and actually WORK to earn their rapacious salaries and benefits!

  • More Hoax and Change.

  • The fact is the public schools are crap and even the good ones don't keep everyone as satisfied as they would be under a voucher system. Where if they don't like the schools they can go to the next best thing. Or they can have classes of 10 and 1 teacher. Where the parents choose the teacher, subjects, days and hours, they all chip in for new supplies, and the students and area the kids have to go to. This would be a good system that's not outdated and works better.

  • Why?

Simple: Obama would rather reinforce one of his thug constituencies [the teacher's unions] then give Americans the freedom to choose what education they would receive.

  • It should have been obvious Obama wouldn't support voucher programs from his 2008 debates with McCain. McCain was the one behind voucher programs because it applied free market principles to public education and significantly increases the level of education for everyone.

Obama didn't like it because the public school system is already the epitome of socialist policy. If throwing money at the one size fits all problem doesn't fix it is like admitting it doesn't work.

  • Obama is a supporter of Teachers unions.. He cares not for those in need.

  • AWESOME!! School Voucher's are a right.. If you are taxed then the tax should provide results.. All public school tax dollars should be used for education.. and they should not be monopolized by the failing public schools.

  • Just wait till we get health care. Maybe next time you will look at the persons back ground before voting if there is a next time!

  • Well you got just what you voted for, you didnt realize it at the time, because he was the same race as you so you voted for him.

I on the other hand saw him for just what he is, a communist and this is what one gets in a communist society, the ones at the top get every thing they want and the rest get what the government lets them have!

Its sad that so many voted race instead of integrity !

  • I don't see any white kids trying to be helped!

  • But Obama needs the support of the pro-Democratic Party teachers' union... So he can't support any kind of school vouchers program because that would actually force schools to perform better, compete for students and fired bad teachers. They can't have that, and the Democrats aren't willing lose the part part of their voter base either. Screw the children, politics come first.

  • I am outraged. This politically motivated move just makes me want to vomit. Those schools fail and they will always fail. Fuck the teacher's union for goodness sake you're sending these kids to their doom. As one commenter said "practice for prison". Throwing billions at the issue won't solve it. Run these shitty public schools out of business if you have to. Do what's best for the kids. Help them overcome their poverty. I just don't understand and I'm angry about this.

  • I had a real bad feeling about that obama guy and that feeling is proving to be spot on.

  • would you be the perfect president. also, lots of this information and quotes are taken out of context.

i'm a right clicka, i'm an ibook flippa. mac and pcs. no fight gets bigga. surf safari. or browse in iE. LOL

  • They hate voucher programs because this produces educated and challenged children. Sadly, public schools push indoctination of all kinds, therefore it gives theses sorry politicians votes!

  • This is one black person that did not vote for Obama. And it's sad that so many of my fellow african-americans voted for him. I bet many of these parents voted for him too. I bet they won't supoort him anymore.

  • true, but the damage is done and obama does not give a hoot and I did not vote just because he is black, I did not vote at all

  • race doesn't matter. how can you only call obama black if he is 1/2 black and 1/2 white. how come no one calls him white?

is it because he is tainted? stfu race doesn't matter

  • What?! Perhaps no one calls Obama a white man because he refers to himself as a black man.

  • what does obama care

his kids r going to private school

  • Supposed "socialists" like Sweden have this type of program for 100% of students. Why can't countries like the U.S and the U.K where I live, learn from this. It's a common sense solution that left and right should agree on.

Only people who want to keep power and control(bureaucrats, unions) would be against this.

  • Control children's thought, control the future. Keep the population weak and just smart enouph to function so you can make them DEPENDANT on you and then you control them. FOREVER

  • EVER, EVER, EVER.... (echoes into eternity)

  • So much money was wasted on cash for clunkers where it could have been better spent on education. A family friend's son bought into the cash for clunkers. Now he can't afford his new car and is having his father foot half the bill. We're in a recession and now people who may have paid off on their car have incurred new debt. Let's see how soon those very same cars get repossessed.

  • Someone told me months ago that this was going to happen with the cash for clunkers in detail.

  • Shame on Obama, I hope this video reached him.

  • Gov = taxation = initiation of the use of force = violence. Initiation of violence or the threat of the initiation of violence can *only* achieve chaos and destruction.

While this voucher program may be considered "good" by some, it is only better relative to the horrific public non-option. I would prefer that the gun of taxation pointing at my neck be put down and that I be free to choose where to put my money.

  • It is such a sad state of being when one see only government as the source of their salvation when history has proved and is still proving over and over again that there is no more oppressive tyrannical force than GOVERNMENT!

  • I suspect there's a budget issue here - maybe the school district spends more money per student than the voucher program, but that doesn't mean the district saves money when a kid leaves the public school. So basically, you have a poor school system and you want an already strapped budget to pull an additional 18 million dollars from somewhere.

And btw, it's deceptive to compare the DC school system budget to national budgets - those big numbers you throw around only serve to manipulate folks.

  • does the voucher program allow for people to use the money for other public schools?

  • "Why?" Why? Because when you have choice you are FREE. When you have no choice you are DEPENDANT. That's why.

  • I went to a high school in a bad neighborhood and it was awful there,

it was gang filled and violence was daily, the school was run down and the teachers were tired.

I hated it there, so i dropped out.

I signed up for online homeschooling and I had to work cleaning toilets to pay for it.

I am now in a good four year university , getting a b.s in biology.

My brothers went 2 the same h.s but soon dropped out and joined gangs from that h.s

there is a learned culture of ignorance and poverty

  • It is good and inspiring to hear that you have done well and have overcome. Hate to hear about your brothers; but keep suceeding. Hope the best for your brothers.

  • thanks

  • I've done public, private and homeschooling. Homeschooling is the best, private school is second and public is bottom on the list. Private schools are better than public. Besides, the voucher system isn't about private or public education; its about choice. Something liberals say they are for. Apparently they are only for "choice" when it comes to abortion.

  • A child's education has more to do with their parents and their parent's attitude towards education at whatever school they are going to more so than where they are going to school.

Most private schools have lower standards for their teacher's education and pay them less than what public school teachers make.

The illusion that private schools give children a better education is bullshit. If parents are dedicated 100% to their children they will learn anywhere.

  • False. Private schools do pay less, but many excellent teachers choose private schools over public because they feel safer and the children are required to toe the mark. Quite simple, really.

You are correct in one thing. A parent's interest in their child's education has an enormous impact on the child's performance.

  • It depends where you live. If you live in a major city where the public schools are just atrocious i can understand. But public schools get this rap that they are just full of violence and disorder, when in reality 95+% of public schools are safe.

  • Public schools are extremely inefficient. If you want children to get a quality education, either open public school tax coffers to competition or pay for parents to operate their own home school. End of story.

  • There's another element to all of this. The so-called "progressive" movement in this country prefers that everyone adopt the same political views. Having one authority over all education helps achieve this. There's nothing to be gained by the progressive movement by allowing people to choose what they learn.

  • Parents home school standards are equal to that of students in the 1800's. Home schooling is a joke.

  • Ha. This from a defender of the public skrool system.

You don't know what you're talking about.

  • great comeback...The facts are that home schooling standards have not changed in nearly 100 years....look it up. If you dont know the facts, then dont argue with someone that does....fucking idiot.

  • Again, (this time imagine the following in italics) you do not know what you are talking about.

But continue to make foolish, unsubstantiated remarks, it's entertaining.

  • Do some research on homeschooling

The homeschooling reading levels and SAT scores DWARF those of public school students, it isnt even debateable. Not remotely close by any reasonable standard

  • Electro bondage in the bathroom - _HARDWETHOLES(.)COM_

  • Did you missed the comparison of 7,500 voucher vs 14,000 public school? Somehow the amount of money sent to the public school divided per child is 14,000 dollars and a voucher child is 7,500. So what's the solution of the declining public school? Make it 15,000 per child? 16,000?

  • These are the kinds of arguments that Milton Friedman often refuted. Every failing government program is blamed on the lack of funding or the wrong administration. When more funding and new administration comes in and still fails miserably the calls for new administration and even more funding come in. These systemic flaws will never be fixed so long as the public continues to bury their heads in the sand.

  • Want to sum up the failure in one word: government. I'm sure Friedman would agree.

  • I'll sum up the problem with 1 word. PEOPLE.

If the government is the problem it's because people are put into power, aren't held accountable, are re-elected even when they have proven not to be trusthworthy, etc... They need to flush out the bad congressmen

Parents need to be more active overall. There is no reason a single school board should be leaning creationist.

You have to blame parents for the problems because if the school board won't do anything they have to replace the school board

  • didn't you watch the video? also watch john stossel's "stupid in america". Lots of evidence that money is NOT the problem, lack of choice is. It would improve schools and cost less money.

  • I have children and my tax dollars pay for their schooling, I should have the choice. Why are liberals pro-choice on other issues, but not this? Absolutely under no circumstances should more money be poured into the broken system until they enact massive reforms... and since the issue of tenure needs to be addressed but will not be under the pro-union Obama administration, then I would not be any more in favore of dumping more money than I would a bailout of private industry. It's WRONG.

  • The reason why liberals are against things like the voucher program... it's very simple.

Private schools shouldn't be government paid for. ESPECIALLY if they have religion or creationism as part of what they teach. Government money should not be used for endorsing any religion.

Furthermore in many big population areas if the kids can transfer to other schools it creates a problem when too many students transfer and there aren't enough teachers, rooms, seats, books, diminishing the education.

  • Vouchers are IN NO WAY the endorsement of a religion by anyone other than the tax paying parents of a child.

But then again most liberals are anti-religion bigots, aren't they?

You give families true choice and let the free market do its' thing and the quality of schools will increase as competition becomes apparent.

Liberals also like to promote the welfare state, giving away the PEOPLE'S money without any regard for results. It's time to change that system.

  • Most bigots are religious so... being called an anti-religious bigot really doesn't mean much to me. XD

That'd be like being called a halocaust bigot "You're a bigot cause you think the nazi haulocaust was wrong and should never happen again"

That's essentially what that amounts to.

Besides creationism should NEVER be allowed in schools. Many private schools deprive children of an education by acting as if Evolution isn't a fact and a very prominent theory. They shouldn't get tax money.

  • Comment removed

  • You conveniently removed your comment before I had a chance to reply so I'll say a few things about what you said.

First off go ahead with all the ad-hominem attacks. People will see who is really being intellectually dishonest.

Second off the whole "You must have went to public school"

Well I moved when I was 5, 6, 8, 13, and 18 years of age. Honestly, there weren't even any private schools around me 99 percent of the time. So you're going to attack me for a choice not mine to even make? WTF

  • @makaisenki: You're not understanding how school vouchers work. The money is not being given to the private school directly. The money is with the kid, and then the parent decides what school the child will go to. Shouldn't it be the parent's decision what education their child receives, rather than the government's?

Also, not to be rude, but if you think that public schools are not suffering from a serious lack of resources and teaching staff, you are very ignorant on the issue.

  • I understand how it works. The problem is though if the parents decide what school they want to send their kid, some schools will get so filled up that it will ruin the overall education. The whole educational system is fucked and needs HEAVY remodeling.

But tell me this. If we go to a voucher system, how will it help the children that are in the only school available to them. Are they going to have to take a bus 60+ miles to go somewhere they can get a decent education?

    That's my major issue.

  • @makaisenki: Unfortunately, what you're saying is incorrect and also illogical. If the money were to go with the child, rather than being indiscriminately funneled into the school system, schools would be forced to improve because they'd be competing against one another. Better schools would get more money and would therefore expand. They've been doing this in Europe (I forget which country -- Belgium, perhaps) already, and not only is it working, but they score higher on education than we do.

  • They wouldn't be forced to improve. I used to live in a city where we had the choice of 2 schools within 20 miles 3 schools within 40 miles and the rest were 60 miles.

EVERY country that is not a 3rd world country scores better than us. Even 1 third world country does. But America is a much larger and more spread out country than MOST. China Russia, those are a bit different.

The 3 choices of schools in that area sucked, why not work on improving schools.

  • @makaisenki: And I'm not sure what area you live in, but I'm in the suburbs and we have at least 6 elementary schools in my area, and are constantly building new ones, because they can't fit all of the kids. These are public schools we're talking about, not private. So not only are schools experiencing severe overcrowding via a PUBLIC system, but the schools are separated by maybe 10 miles max. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, the next school isn't 60 miles off.

  • Well a lot of areas only have a choice of 2-4 schools in 60 mile areas. But lets take New York as an example. They have a TON of schools possibly hundreds all within a 15 mile radius. They hold lottos to get into the good schools. Now what would happen if you open up the flood gates? Thousands of kids would flood into a school suddenly.

Where will they get the teachers? Class Space? Books? Computers? etc.. They can't build that much infastructure all at once.

Improve them all first THEN vouch

  • They have been trying to improve the public school system for the last 50 years. Today, they're more daycare centers than centers for learning.

Open the door to competition and you'll see miraculous improvement. Make sense? You know it does.

  • Well it does, but then you still have to answer questions like in New York where it has a high population density, what exactly will happen to the schools that are already performing very well but don't have enough class rooms, books, or room to expand their building in order to allow newer students?

Where are they suddenly going to get all of that? How will it not negatively impact the children there?

How are we going to make sure that the new competition educate rather than indoctrinating?

  • In Memphis, Tennessee, the cost to send one child to a public school for one year is approximately $9,500. A parochial school in Memphis costs approximately $5,000 per year. Memphis city schools have one of the lowest achievement scores in the country and one of the highest drop-out rates. Catholic schools excel.

Introduce competition into the equation and private business will vie for tax dollars and build the necessary schools to accommodate the influx of students. Competition works.

  • That's an example of competition working. Umm.. Memphis Tennessee is NOT New York. This is stuff that can be done on a local level. It'd be nice for them to test it on a local level in different areas. If it doesn't work out though we're going to need to have a different strategy.

I just hope those catholic students are being taught proper evolutinary biology, and not brainwashed with bullshit unproven unscientific philosphy that lost in the dover trial with a bush appointed republican judge.

  • First, the voucher program has been tested again and again and it WORKS. Higher test scores at a fraction of the cost... what's not to like?

Second, who are you to dictate what "proper" education is? If parents want their children to be taught that God created life, that's none of your business.

  • Well evolution is proper education. The idea that God created life isn't that big of a problem. But the assertion that God created all the animals in 7 days and that evolution is Satan's plot to confuse the religious is wrong as well.

It's also wrong for parents to teach their kids that medicine is evil and to let their children suffer and die because they refuse to take them to a hospital

It's wrong for a parent to teach their kids that planes fly because of Gods will rather than aerodynamics

  • First of all, many Christians understand that the 7 days in Genesis could represent great amount of time, say 7000 years. Many Christians, such as I, disagree with the "young earth" viewpoint as well. Evolution is an widely abused theory. It's main problem, it simply cannot account for the origin of life. The bible (a historical document) has an answer to that problem.

  • Evolution was never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever...

Supposed to account for the theory of life.

Or do you want me to say that the main problem with the theory of gravity, is that it doesn't account for aerodynamics and doesn't explain why somethings fly.

We have different theories for different reasons. Aerodynamics explains why some things fly. Gravity explains why some things don't.

Just like evolution is about variety, abiogenesis is about origins.

  • Oh really? So Charles Darwin wasn't trying to explain the origin of the species in his book.. er... The Origin Of The Species?

Sorry! Evolutionary theory has been promoted in public education for years to try to explain the origins of life. Where have you been?

  • The origin of SPECIES does not mean the origin of LIFE.

Evolution in no way shape or form requires life to have come about by naturalistic or metaphysical means.

If an entity were to have created life, or if life were to have began in a crude form, evolution wouldn't behave any differently. Evolution is merely explaining the variation of life. It does not assert in any way shape or form how that life originally started.

Evolution and abiogenesis are 2 completely different processes and theory

  • Second, I have been a church-going Christian my entire life and I've never heard of any parent denying their child medical treatment because "medicine is evil". That sounds like crazy cult stuff.

    ...And third, also nonsense.

  • Well there are a lot of crazy cult denominations within the Abrahamic religions.

Right now there is a growing anti-vaccine anti-medicine, health-care-kills-people movement, and most of the people that seem to be preaching some of these are usually religious and using the concept of God to further the agenda.

A notable exception to that is Bill Maher. But without teaching evolution and about science they lose opprotunities within scientific fields by being told that science is just a conspiracy

  • The good schools grow, the poor ones fail over time like it should be. Resources should flow to those getting results, not those that continue to fail

  • Dude... it's a fucking easy solution.

If it's broken FIX IT FOR FUCKS SAKE.

If it's not broken THEN WE WON"T FUCKING FIX IT!

Really dude is it THAT hard to understand that we can fix the school districts. It's not even a money problem. It's a problem with how the schools are educating and that can EASILY be demonstrated with the fact that we spend more money per student than any other country and some of our lowest funded schools are high performing.

IT'S NOT A MONEY ISSUE DUDE SERIOUSLY!

  • if the schools get more and more populated, than they will need teachers from the closed down/failing schools, so really no jobs are being lost.

and your second part, every voucher system has exceptions, especially for small towns, like hte ones we'd see in the south. the gov't will strengthen those schools.

  • If that's the case, then why would we want to hire the teachers that are part of the problem? If a bad teacher gets hired the teacher union BS is going to keep them from getting fired, that's why so many pedophiles remain teachers. It's a bitch to get rid of them.

Where the hell are they going to seat thousands of new students? How are we going to prevent the bad teachers from getting rehired?

Why can't we just improve the school system first THEN institute vouchers once overall quality is up?

  • a lot of it has to do not so much with teachers, but with public school curriculum.

the whole point of this competition cancels out poorly performing teachers. We need to weaken the teacher's unions, and give people more of a choice.

Vouchers would make fixing schools much quicker. Instituting new curriculums, finding new teachers who are fit, sometimes finding the problems in schools, and lastly instituting new policies would take decades.

  • Why should we have to screw over 15 - 25 years of the education of children ? To fulfill the stale ideas of democratic bureaucrats?

Let the economy work, let the people decide. It's these democratic policies that keep generations of people in low-income areas and leave them stranded to making poor decisions.

  • sorry i replied so fast lol. I was on my computer and i got an email on my mail application saying that you replied.

  • What you're advocating is democratic policies. You're advocating that people vote by sending their kids to different schools and then by a majority vote the ones that have no kids are weeded out. That is democracy. That's a direct vote essentially.

The idea that the market can fix itself is what keeps the poor getting poorer. The only way to fix the situation is to limit the activities that are permissible. For example no school text book should be allowed to preach Creationism/ID PERIOD!

  • I hope you know you are arguing with a 16 year old. I am not talking about voting democracy, i am talking about the democratic party, as they are amply voting down the use of vouchers.

What I am advocating are NOT democratic policies (as in the party ideology). What I AM advocating is how economic liberty gives the individual a choice to how they are educated. No one is talking about creationism, even though a theology class should be an elective for the students interested in the course.

  • Creationism is an example. There are people that will choose to send their kids to anti-evolutionary schools because they are idiots. I use idiots in the way that they ignore evidence in order to hold their belief.

The problem I have with vouchers is let's pretend that your school is at it's capacity and has limited room to expand, is over capacity in the class rooms, and suddenly gets 20 percent increase in the student population.

What do you think would happen to overall quality?

  • People who live outside of inner-city schools will not need such support, as our public schools are doing somewhat ok. It's the kids in the schools in NYC, the Bronx that are getting dealt a bad hand because htey were not born into a rich family. Giving back the public the money they would spend on their own public school to use to their financial advantage to choose a better school forms equality and that is what many conservatives are fighting for on capitol hill.

  • Essentially, it is OUR money, we, under our constitution, are entitiled to our money, furthermore, enabling us to make our OWN CHOICES.

(i'm not trying to be rude when i capitalize my letters, im just trying to distinguish a point.) lol Nice debating with you though!

  • I distinguish points when I type with caps on as well.

Let me use one last analogy for you.

If the PARENTS decided with their OWN money that THEY want to send THEIR kid to a school that will teach THEIR kids that the earth is FLAT and not round... That's their choice right? Even if THEY want THEIR kids with THEIR money to be taught that the sun revolves around the EARTH, it's THEIR choice right?

We need a system set up that values facts, truth, and science over mere uneducated choices.
