Everyone needs to stop bickering about his foreign affairs. The most important aspects of his work were of course what he did in Sweden, and as Prime Minister, he was a disaster. He made his people dependent on his advanced, but fragile economic system, were people paid huge taxes for no good (other countries had welfare too, some with half the tax burden). It failed several times, and we the people had to pay the debt. Luckily, the Moderates were now re-elected, and a hope for liberty remains.

If he was such a great politician for the Swedish people, then tell me about some of the brilliant stuff he did. Why it was a great idea raising the tax burden to far above 50%, even 100% for a few people at one point, when Erlander had been managing the welfare state with lower taxes than most of Europe. Tell me why his 80s economic policies did NOT in fact cause the early 90's crisis.

Cuz all of the money went to military (and yes Sweden did have an army, about 2½ - 3 million soldiers was station on the borders to Denmark, Norway and Finland) And in such a time a Welfare state is impossible with is why all taxes was lowered

2) He had the chance of ending the compulsion, which the USA did at the time. A more cost effective and less oppressive way of building an army. But he didn't.
3) Again, marginal taxes. Not all people paid that much, only a small number of unfortunate self employers. Such as Astrid Lindgren.

Anyway, P-A Hansson had been keeping Sweden intact during WW2, so Erlander got to handle the huge exporting of Swedish goods as the rest of Europe was rebuilding. During that time, he fully realized the welfare state, with low taxes due to this huge export we had. He did pretty damn good actually.
5) Kjell olof feldt, minister of finance during the 80s, has admitted that his policies were to blame. Google it.

Swedish trade with Cuba, which mostly was tourism by Swedish communists, had no effect what so ever on Cuban economy. And they did not need to push us into NATO. Sweden has shared it's Intel on Soviet/Russia since the 50's.

@kondurperusix - USSR was major arms supplier to Iraq during Iraq/Iran war. Sweden was interfering with the business by selling to Iraq as well. This, in combination with the fact that Palme strongly supported dismantling the Soviet Empire, made him a target for the Soviets. American motivation was nowhere near as strong.

Papandreou was a liar capitalising on Swedens success to gain popular support and to attract votes. They nationalised many sectors just to control them and create needless jobs. He was a friend of Greece's politicians beacuse he was antijunta and he believed them to be sincere.

Olof Palme didn't do much good in Sweden. But he did a lot of goodness to Cuba, the Soviet Union and other communist countries. You go figure if that is good or evil.

Anyway, P-A Hansson had been keeping Sweden intact during WW2, so Erlander got to handle the huge exporting of Swedish goods as the rest of Europe was rebuilding. During that time, he fully realized the welfare state, with low taxes due to this huge export we had. He did pretty damn good actually.

Swedish trade with Cuba, which mostly was tourism by Swedish communists, had no effect what so ever on Cuban economy. And they did not need to push us into NATO. Sweden has shared it's Intel on Soviet/Russia since the 50's.

More likely that he was killed by the communist east as he was a strong advoacate for the freedom of Eastern Europe from Soviet control. The timing of the assassination, when the west could anticipate freedom for Eastern Europe and the Soviets could anticipate losing control, points more strongly at Soviet involvement than that of the western capitalists.

@kondurperusix - USSR was major arms supplier to Iraq during Iraq/Iran war. Sweden was interfering with the business by selling to Iraq as well. This, in combination with the fact that Palme strongly supported dismantling the Soviet Empire, made him a target for the Soviets. American motivation was nowhere near as strong.

@am1966ath Sorry friend but you're wrong, Andreas Papandreou claimed to want to create a system like Swedens, a social democratic state with a strong welfare state to support it, but he actually never intended to do so. Papandreou was a liar capitalising on Swedens success to gain popular support and to attract votes. They nationalised many sectors just to control them and create needless jobs. He was a friend of Greece's politicians beacuse he was antijunta and he believed them to be sincere.
