this song will forever be one of those wonderful mind tattoos from growing up in the great 80's what will always be ringing in my head from time to time...
The 80's is when music was at it's best! There was always something different to listen to, todays music all sounds the same to me!!!! The kids today have no clue!!!
I'm the biggest 80s fan there is this band I did not care for don't like young singers but this song is hot and if u took time to Wright on this page u know it to and I'm a black guy
my band is opening for Bow Wow Wow on Jan 14th, 2012 at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA....through my band you can get tickets at a much lower cost than at the door or via ticket agencies and I don't charge postage or any other fees. Find me on Facebook, just type in Mark Motorcade and then email me for ticket info or go to the bands reverbnation or Facebook page..Hope to see you all there..Bow Wow Wow rules!!!
true story...I was around 13 years old, I switched on MTV when this was brand new and saw the video for the first time. I lived 6 blocks from a record store and ran there and back within 30 minutes and had this LP (album) blaring on my old record player. I still remember it like it was yesterday
@SluttChops I just looked it up. Yes, they were English. Gee, after all these years I'd thought they were from S Africa. I know that they use a lot of African rythms, none the less.
I saw them warm up for The Police in '83 and it was quite the experience. Annabella was only 15 (or so I heard) and the audience loved her until she tore off her hat to expose bald head and braids. This was in a real hick part of the world and people started "boo" at the sight of it. Morons.
@chilesgreen - wow! You just bought back a load of memories and smiles for me. As you were "steaming" on the KENNEDY CV-67; I was on the USS America CV-66 in the same waters at the same time; listening to BWW and all of the other fantastic music from that time. Some of the best memories of my young life!
Life long friendships - regardless of Class or COLOR !!
I haven't heard this tune since 83, when I was aboard the JFK, CV-67. A guy in my shop (AE2 Ken Kotch) played this tune on his ghetto blaster all the time, and the tune's been stuck in my head over 28 years. @nauort23 I think it's funny how no one mentions all that crap that was on MTV then. I bet younger people assume it was all new wave. I've had to tell more than one younger friend that while some of these "MTV bands" get a lot of play in retro programming, that radio at that time was loaded with Lionel Ritchie and other b.s. I'm still trying to forget. Aldo Nova, indeed!
@Tracymmo Tell me about it. I was one of the only "new wavers" at my high school (class of '82) and I got plenty of grief for it--especially from the Molly Hatchet crowd!
@nauort23 I was class of 85 in a blue collar Rust Belt school . . . i.e. Journey, Van Halen, etc territory. Those of us who liked new wave stuck together like long lost siblings. In college, interestingly, the metalheads and the "alternative" (whatever) people got on just fine, but that's surely because the rest of the campus was fratty. That's where the harassment came in.
This song and video is a brilliant incarnation of Malcolm McClaren and it shows the incredible talent of Annabella Lwin (then 16 years of age). No Doubt were influenced by this band, but, of course they could never compare.
@CAPNBEANS his name is matt pinfield, he was a radio dj and MTV vj, very knowledgeable about music, probably just introducing the video, which kicks ass!
This song was no big deal to me back in the 80's but i can definitely relate with it now. A very positive happy song with a very attractive young lady at the helm. The early and mid 80's had a lot to offer music wise. And oh to see Ronald Reagan back in office is very wishful thinking.
I remember I did my make up like Anabella has in this video, and my mom said "Hell No!' LOL. I just re-applied it once I got to school. Love ya, mom. ; )
ANYBODY KNOW WHERE SHE,AND THE BAND ARE TODAY,SHE'S GOOD,BUT WHEN THEY CAME OUT,I SAID,"16YRS,IN A BAND,HOW DOES SHE GO TO SCHOOL,DIDN'T HER PARENTS CARE,DID SHE MAKE IT,ISN'T THERE LAW TO GO TO SCHOOL,TILL,WHEN,ANYBODY KNOW
Loved this song....I still have the single (45 record) I purchased back then and play this song from time to time on my record player; however, this video was done badly......
This is "vintage" MTV. During MTV's heyday, no less. This was (and still is) the pinnacle of what MTV was "supposed" to be. I can see it over and over.
@avq5 the imagery is critical/ironic commentary on America: greasy food, overeating, military weapons, Ronald Reagan, and various movie/media figures such as Pinocchio, Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan, Superman, Robin, etc. Basically the band just visited some costume warehouse at a movie studio and tried on different costumes.
Of course Annabella is awesome, but the drummer, bassist, and guitarist are also amazing musicians...they get a lot of sound out of those three instruments.
Why (weightlifter) is Annabella giving you so much wood? We've gots loads here, we coppice/ burn wood without killing the trees. They carry on growing! You should perhaps tell Annabella, not to waste her resources!
@macstar2010 it wasn't top 20 because it wasn't a big radio hit. this song is famous for it's video but wasn't played much over the air. that was what made the difference in these cases.
@ThePennylanelove The Greatest gift life can bestow, is youth, enjoy it and live it, and don't abuse it. Hope is A Good Thing, those that choose to look for it will find it- if they know where to look, peace.
I remember growing up in the eighties and thinking the music was generally awful...wishing it to be as good as the seventies and sixties were. The eighties just seemed so bland and artificial (with the odd exception). However, looking back, the eighties certainly weren't as bad as what we have now.
@thedoc241000 I have a different outlook. The sixties were great, seventies disco and mainstream sucked, and the eighties were awesome. Much of the '80s music was like '60s music, but more condensed at a faster speed. This is a beautiful example. Just love it.
I was in the 10th grade when this came out...those were the days. English Beat, The Clash, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Adam Ant...I can go on. I MISS THE 80'S!!! Who else?
@louieg40 wow, your dumbass unfunny comment was just an uninspired exact repeat of an earlier dumbass unfunny comment - until you put the LMAO at the end and turned it into pure comedy gold!!!!!!!
@weightlifterf2 Hey Dumbass..I accomplished my goal...it botherd you so you had to respond...a wiser man would of just laughed about it and moved on....if you reply all i will do is delete your message..so don't bother ..you friggin LOSER
@louieg40 Hey Fucktard .. maybe your next goal should be to learn to spell ... I won't even tell you what third-grade word you misspelled you friggin HUMAN CUMSTAIN
@weightlifterf2 Bow Wow Wow trying to tell us something: The cowboy losing his gun..... "I have been to California" notice the question marks.... The food over and over again... Mickey Mouse..... Economy The spaces between the tooth Serious SHIT is going on !! Greetings to all of you Ricky
@weightlifterf2 She pulled up next to my friends and I on Hollywood Blvd back in the day. We all acted like idiots to get her attention. She looked over, said something to her driver, and they sped off. She was BEAUTIFUL!!!! She is still a stunning woman and I keep forgetting that she is actually about 4 or 5 years younger than I. She is still on my "list". You know which one....
saw them at the Hollywood Paladium for the when the going gets tough tour. They totally kicked ass.Every song was jumpin.Only the B 52s and Talking Heads put on a better show.bar none Annabella was the most awesome front woman[sorry Stevie]
