I wish it'd be offered in manual only when it's sold in the States, then people would have to learn... but that would never happen, they'd lose money in like 4 seconds. Stupid Americans, I'm in the process of looking for this particular car I want and I can't find a stickshift version in my area. so lame.
@PantstofryPWNZ I've never understood why Americans prefer auto's, they are so unsatisfying to drive, kind of like a golf cart, it literally takes no skill at all. And all you have to slow down with is brakes!?
@D41H4T5U We're taught in driver's ed on automatic cars. Our parents drive automatic cars now, even though most of them started with manuals. So we buy automatics. It's sad really, I can't find this car I want in anything but auto... maybe my dealer will get one in soon.
I think part of it is also that the new DSG and other gearboxes are quicker than a hand, and have paddle shifters and whatnot, so people think they're getting the best of both worlds... but stick is truly different...
@PantstofryPWNZ That sucks. I hate auto's. Paddle shifts are ok, at least you can still use the gears unlike in a normal auto where it drives you rather than you driving it! But i still prefer a clutch and gear stick too. I never understood auto's, they're slower, heavier, have higher emissions and lower fuel economy due to the weight and the gearing, they make an awful noise etc, they're just naff!
@D41H4T5U I'm considering buying the paddle shift, since I can't find a stick... at least I can keep it in M mode and row my own gears... somewhat... really disappointing though.
Some automatics are more fuel efficient, but yes, they are heavier and most aren't as efficient. It's really a shame. The gov is like blah blah texting while driving is bad and we need new technology to combat it...
how's this? everybody drives stick, that way nobody has a free hand to text on!
@PantstofryPWNZ lol yeah. This car is good, when you get a text it reads it out loud to you, pretty funny if someone write a crude one! Are you sure it's not going to be sold with a full manual? I can't quite believe that? Not even as an option? I keep finding reasons NOT to live in America, now i have another! :)
@PantstofryPWNZ lol yeah. This car is good, when you get a text it reads it out loud to you, pretty funny if someone write a crude one! Are you sure it's not going to be sold with a full manual? @D41H4T5U Oh, sorry for confusing you. I was looking at another car for myself, that doesn't come frequently with a manual to dealers. But it has 306hp, even though it's cool (typical American to want lotsa power) I will probably wait the extra year until the Abarth gets here. The Fiat is definitely coming with a manual, and of course the Abarth will. This car still amazes me. Screw the 306hp
@PantstofryPWNZ Well as has been proven 100's of times by Top Gear and the like, power isn't everything! Watch some of the America V's ...... by Jeremy Clarkson and you'll see why! And besides, a friend of mine has this car and he's tuned it to around 300 BHP, the most tuned model i know of was running at 360 BHP, from a 1.4 litre! I do surprise a lot of bigger more powerful cars around here, even though mine only has 160 to 170 HP.
@D41H4T5U I realize that. This car is very light and it's great for a city cruiser, and will be great when the Abarth gets here. The only thing that concerns me is the lightness of the car vs. snow. Do you drive it in snow? I'm sure it's not terrible, and usually roads are plowed quite well here, I'm just worried that it will be too light to plow its way out of a little bank.
But I have a small car right now, so I'm used to it anyway. The V6 coupe is so tempting, but man... this car is SWEET
@PantstofryPWNZ Well it's a small light car with big wheels and lots of power so it's not the best in the snow! Most people i know get themselves some 15" or 16" wheels and fit winter tyres, seems to do the job.
Do you know if I can get the paddle shifters on anything other than the Abarth? I saw a photo of the interior of that one & fell in love with the layout.
@rml695 I guess when it's sold in the US, most Americans like auto's (god only knows why!) so there's a high chance a paddle shift will be available. It is available on the Abarth 500 convertible model only in the UK, but there is a Ferrari 695 Tributo editon (180 BHP) coming soon with a similar setup. Get a manual dude, they're 1000 times better!
@rml695 My concern is the shift pattern. I'd be okay with a 5 speed but the 6 I'd be worried about wanting to have it in 1st from a stop light, and shifting (while looking at the light to see when it goes green) then I let off the gas not realizing I'm in Reverse.
@minibus1351 I think it will be sold with the semi auto (no clutch) gearbox that the convertable version has, where you can have it in auto, or change gear F1 style with flappy paddles. But i can't see why people would want to drive an auto these days?
Yes these little 1.4 litres are good for 360 HP if you've got the money to spend! So long as they don't ruin it with an auto box! Best way to ruin a decent car, fit a stupid automatic gearbox!
Done 12,000 miles in mine now, she's nicely run in, gives a 300 HP Focus RS a run for it's money ;)
Realy like the 500 Abarth! I have a Fiesta ST150, and many years ago had a nearly new Renault 5GT Turbo......(1993) You just cant beat a small fast car...think the 500 Abarth has to be the best small fast car out there! May have to book a test drive quite soon!! lol
I think it's worth it, besides you get a lot back if/when you sell it so it's not so bad. I have a 1.4 untill the Abarth is fixed and it feels very slow compared with the Abarth! i can't wait to get it back.
I have the 1.2 "Sport" Version with 70hp, thats not really that much. I guess i'll just testdrive this little racer and ask the dealer what he can do for me. ;-)
I wish you all the best with your "new best friend"!
Trust me, after driving the Abarth you WILL want one! It's such a fun car and i have noticed it uses less fuel than the 1.4 i have at the moment. Good luck, let me know if you get one. What colour would you get?
Yeah i think so too! I guess i'll go with white and the black stickers. My 500 is black, looks good, but the abarth needs to be white. I dont like it in black, red or grey.
I'll let you know when i bought mine but i think i'll wait till next year. Thanks for all the info by the way!
great car, i drive an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA and think the Abarth is my next car...i love the 3.2l V6 in the GTA but this also sounds awesome (in a different way) and will be cheaper to run and probably to maintain.
I test drove a Brera 2.4 diesel before i bought this. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the performance (or the sound!) Gets mid 20's MPG when nailing it, but on a run it's possible to get 50 MPG. Such a fun car, turns sooooo many heads! Test drive one now!
Well if i get the SS kit, that has a special panel filter as part of the kit anyway. Like i said, this car beat the Aston Martin Vanquish (as well as many other bigger super cars) around Top Gear's track, i chose performance this time so I'm not expecting great economy. 30 MPG average, mid 20's with a heavy foot, and 50+ MPG on a long run.
That has quite an impressive exhaust note for such a little car. From a "yank" point of view, I have never been impressed with the styling of most European passenger cars, but that is one car I would be damn proud of owning! Of course, I would have to have a black one with dark tinted windows and a/c,of coruse. ;)
Thanks for the comment! Wait till you hear it revving! and when you change gear she backfires like a rally car too! Black is available, air con is standard but mine has climate too. It has tinted windows too but it's illegal here to have the front ones done. It also has auto dipping mirror, follow me home lights, electronic stability program, anti skid recognition, torque transfer control, ABS, sport button, blue and me built in, trip computer, 7 airbags! etc etc the list is endless!
It's amazing fun, and so exclusive too, not many on the road and it draws so much attention. Not bad on fuel either, just as good as the 100HP panda. Got 40 MPG yesterday despite driving a few miles at 120 MPH!
great vid, i heard one go past me a few days back and it sounded really good like a burbling growl :D i saw a red one too but i still think youve got the best colour combo by far!

Even if they bring this to the US, people don't know how to drive stick so... no point. Let them just drive crappy cars or learn to shift.

Try replacing the entire stock air intake with a K&N open pod air filter. Both fuel economy and engine responsiveness should improve.
