Corey John Richardson empathy is one tool of many - not to be overstated as this video may do. if we were merely wired for this bonding.... then the empirical evidence of cruelty, etc. etc. and his extrapolation from a few MRI studies is too far reaching.
@coreyjohnrichardson Seems to me the video made fairly clear that we are "soft wired" for the empathetic changes that we have observed through various stages of "civilization". Obviously the world in which we live has a huge role in making those "soft" connections.
As much as this guy is right, I dont think the "rewritting of the human narrative" will ever happen. With twisted mo-fos behind governments and corperations keeping everyone at each others throats plus all the idiotic feuds ppl constantly have whether its over race, religion, nationality, ethinic background, even difference of opinion for christ sakes, our world is just drowning in the hatred. x[
Might I recommend Steven Pinkers analysis of the state of violence in the world today compared to the past. It generally turns most people who think things aren't improving from hopeless cynics and pessimists, to at the very least, hesitant optimists.
JESUS. I would have acquired a hand cramp after the first 5 minutes of drawing this. WHO HAS THE TIME. but this IS extremely simple yet profound...so I'll watch and not complain:)
I have some problems with this. I have not maintained ties with my cousins since we were 10. They live just a couple of miles from my house. How exactly should I belive in brotherhood of all men? And how does the extention of empaty not diminish its intensity? This is not only silly, but also dangerous.
No it actually isn't... The problem is its not a matter of logical intepretation, although the conclusions are logical, it is a call for emotional reconstruction, which is simply not possible for some people. Once you start researching more advanced psychological phenomena you realize after certain critical stages of development peoples ability to be increasingly empathetic is stunted. Children are the future, not us, its simply not possible for many to ever understand this.
There is an earliest Paternal ancestor, which is much more recent due to male tendency to have polyamorous relationship tendencies from past to present (Probably related to the biological simplicity of male reproduction compared to female), and the paternal ancestor is very recent, tracing to 4 women at the time. However, there is also a Maternal ancestor thousands of years before that, to which all women in the world can trace their genetic lineage. Fascinating stuff.
@lokadin It doesn't need a belief in reincarnation to instill a sense of responsibility for the earth's sustainability. All it takes is the full realisation that future generations, our children and their progeny, inherit what we make or destroy. That to me should be the strongest motivation to maintaining a life-supporting environment and not the ego-centred idea of reincarnation.
the problem with mono-incarnatioalism is that people lose all accountability for their actions, since they presume they'll never come back, so they overharvest and do many unsustainable short-term practices that are long-term detrimental, since they are under the small-minded belief of mono-incarnationalism. People that know and understand reincarnation, take care of the planet and it's peoples, so there will be a place to be reborn in the next life.
@lokadin If you hold onto the idea of a life after death, you will not be the best you can be in life. Embrace the idea that it's one show only, and make the best of it.
@lokadin He doesn't discredit reincarnation at all. While we might only be living this one life, it is very well possible that some part of us, maybe our soul, our inner being, something, passes on from whoever we were before this life into who we are today.
So, deep down we're all good guys, and it's just ideas that make us cling into us and them. In the end, when we're all about to unite under one flag, whose idea will we all be required think, what will we do to those who disagree, and how much will those in charge be paid?
Very interesting. I have to mention however that Y-chromosomal Adam lived in an entirely different period that Mitochondrial(mDna) Eve... some 50,000 years or so difference. Google Y-chromosomal Adam for more info. The idea that we all came from two human beings holds very different meaning scientifically as opposed to the classical religious interpretations. I am not claiming that the Torah/Bible/Quran were wrong, the common interpretations however are.

@Firewoman888 So what you're saying is that on a fundamental level, humans are pants-shitting, toy-breaking, hair-pulling infants, and that we have absolutely no hope of ever pulling ourselves out of that state? I liked the pictures too. Funny he said Utopia is real and empathy is not. Utopia is made of two Greek words meaning no place, meaning it is a wonderful place that does and will not ever exist in reality--kind of Platonic. Empathy is actually an intellectual understanding of what another is experiencing without sharing actual feelings along with them. Sympathy is more what he was talking about. What he was calling empathic distress allows people to experience situations vicariously--feeling

yes, what we've learned about the universe in the last few centuries makes it *more* likely life exists elsewhere. But no first contact yet - even with a virus.
@arenejo That's what is being investigated right now. The theory is that their limbic system is under developed, but parts like the occipital lobe are over developed, leaving them in a constant and emotionally crippled predatory state.
Sounds good, that is for beginners and fools, least we forget our current society is dominated by "Psychopaths", Highly intelligent, yet highly deceptive and cunning by nature, characterized by the inability to form human attachment, Totally lacking empathy, remorse and emotional depth, masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal, they often manage to pass themselves off as average individuals by feigning emotions and lying about their past.
Not all psychopaths are violent; they often use manipulation to gain what they want. In general, they are people who care little about what others think about them and they use others to achieve their goals or needs. Robert D. Hare, C.M. Canadian researcher in the field of criminal psychology estimates that about one percent (1 %) of the US population are psychopaths. This is the same amount of people who own and control 93% of America's Wealth. The rest of us are the 99%.
This video does much to address positive aspects of empathy without addressing why we as humans must protect ourselves from each other in societies, and a biosphere, with finite resources.
@preichne In terms of finite resources, if we all practiced empathy it might be less of an issue. n every society there are going to be a few crazy ones who want to destroy the others, and that's the main problem. People who don't listen to reason and debate are the dangers to practicing empathy. Thus, in short, internet haters are the kinds of people who are a anger to our society... bugger.
One basic concept he has wrong in this vid: No empathy in utopia... there is no logical reason for this. Empathy encompasses both positive and negative emotions.
i love this!! saw it on ted.com but it was amazing and wanted to post it here!! I loved how (will sound stupid to say because it doesn't even bring up the subject) you mentioned us, Chile, and our earthquake, it wasn't as damaging as the one in Haiti but you still mentioned it, and don't know i am not used to hear my country's name, thought it was worth mentioning it :D
loved your talk and you are absolutely right about everything!
This lecture was outstanding. I really wish everybody in the world would realize that we are all in this together. The probability of being alive right now in our galaxy alone is like playing poker and getting a thousand royal flushes in a row. I really hope that the next step in man's journey is a unified nation of people that respect the Earth and all of its inhabitants.
@Gbabyway2be The universe is teaming with life. The probability of us being the only bastion of life in our galaxy is literally 0. We find amino acids and microbal life in meteorites. To assume there is no life on a planet we have not sufficiently explored is backward. Assume there is life nearly everywhere, as has been shown EVERYWHERE we have sufficiently explored.
That's MUCH better! Well done! I agree with you, we should completely re-organise the way our world is run. I'm sure that a few intelligent and caring people could make a better world for everyone. Thanks GaiaisOurMother!
Very, very interesting. Who did the drawings? They're really good, he must be English because he spells civisation (and other words) with an s and not a z, as americans do. I'd love to know more.
Proposition: rationalising global needs and organisation of productions and delivery arround it.
Exemples, one company with thousands of workers can produce all sosks needed for all.
We produce each year bilions of T-shirts every years on the same way.
Agricultural and Industrial workers represent arround 20% of the population and we still over produce. I see plenty of place to organise clearly on minded way an organisation for sharing work, penibility, ressources..saving free time for all
I would add that now, civilizations (not culture) AND social ladder (as money and power accumulation drived for a selfish use) tend to create envy and feeking we're not equal in our life time use. There are the good ones with great life (travel, money and supposely love) and the poor rats that lives in slums and work to build that life that "the good ones" live.
Maybe should we learn/teach earlier about death to children?
Interresting to think, for the pasts civilisations and government (in opposition of personnal human central perspectives), boundaries building came from as well with necessity of a Potential Enemy/Threat. That alien you re talking about.
That tend to show, I guess, that construction of FEAR (of the other, of differences, rejection from the "other team"...) is the biggest driver that opposite to enlarging the feeling of Empathy.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."
I found this video via John Green and it is brilliant. I feel enlightened, and optimistic about the human race and our abilities and our future. Thank-you. This was beautifully made, too - wonderful drawings :)
our instinct to survive and succeed trumps all other notions of socialism.
socialism is such a vague concept where it can be interpreted, manipulated, and utilized into many other things. It is easily corrupted for it has no standard, and it has no parameters.
one can dwell on the fantastical things of what this notion "empathic civilization" can provide them, but that's how many sheeps are herded when they cannot think for themselves.
@bluevlocity407 I would say survive and perpetuate, that seems to be the biological order of things. But the survival instinct really only starts making us "less empathic" when the competition for resources appears, then is when all our empathy goes down the drain. So, from my point of view what needs to be resolved is this current crysis of of resources which can be solved practically in 2 ways: lower the human population, increase technology in order to create the resources.
I'm so lucky that I found this video, I have an exam tomorrow and one of the topics is "The empathic civilisation". After watching this, I realy understood, Thank you !!
A brotherhood of man... No longer a mere Newe Age fantasy, but a scientificly supported, rational possiblility ... ? No matter the how or what, as long as it happens, that's the most important thing. Just imagine what a world we would live in ... I say YES. I wish all living creatures the very best.
This video is really wonderful. Could we all live in one global group? its sounds like a dream. But than i think, never in history was a group that was'nt united against another group. Maybe the definition of group is to unite against others. Maybe we are all enslaved to our own human nature which is to hate in order to unite.
And If not, how could we educate the world to change this mentality?
@Zizipilo I believe this is in part due to the fragility part of humans in the video. In fact we are vulnerable and know others as vulnerable therefore we can experience empathy, but the fact is we also fear one another because we know that others can hurt us and we can hurt others. In order to protect ourselves we either retaliate or hurt others first in order to not be attained in our vulnerability. We need to develop the strength to love others in spite of this.
@matlabomb and we need to accept our vulnerability instead of hiding it through hatred and attacking others - which is really fear of getting hurt and protection of ourselves. We need to learn to be emotionally stronger. The video shows we have the capacity for empathy, it's for us to use it but there is a lot of fear tied into it which is easily understandable. Therefore we can start by being empathetic towards ourselves and others of their difficulty being empathetic because of what it implies
Just something I want to mention. Y-Chromosome Adam and Mitochondrial Eve lived at completely different times. The human race today is ultimately descended from both of them, but we are not a result of their copulating as they most likely didn't even know about each other [they lived thousands of years apart].
Im sure the author of this video must be smiling a bit with the global OWS movement. Humanity IS beginning to look past the "nation state" limitation and forge a global humanist agenda in opposition to corporatism and its threats to humanity and our biosphere.
Rituals of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, such as sweat lodges, begin with the statement, "All my relations," an acknowledgment that all people, all creatures, are connected, are one.
This reminds me of Alan Moore's brilliant comic book series "Watchmen". I can't spoil it, but it really identifies the tendency of humans to unite in the face of the 'alien other'.
@markitymark90 Seriously! Mushrooms (or, more precisely, psilocybin) have been proven to reduce recidivism rates among ex-cons! Wiki the "Concord Prison Experiment."
Oh yeah? and why? You know there are scientific studies showing that volunteers who consumed Psilocybin mushrooms noticed an increased quality of life, empathy, and happiness long after they have taken it?
Cannabis can break inhibitions during social situations, but it surely isn't as effective as Psilocybin in terms of long lasting psychological changes for the better. Not to mention cannabis can be a catalyst for schizophrenia, to persons who are genetically predisposed to it.
Mans cosigning of pride, ignorance and corruption will cause the death of us all. The only cure is Hardcore Christianity. For Christianity's fundamentals is empathy and the emphasis placed upon love and selflessness. You can not deny the reasoning.
Nice thought. Empathy vs. Narcissim. Got a long way to go from the last century when 100 million died from war alone. And hopefully empathy can survive the current Muslim demonism that is leading us into a potential world war. One that would surely make the wars of the last century, pale. Root for world wide empathy instead.
Well in terms of what's best for humanity we've always known that peace is the answer. Hippies were visionaries. Punks were reactionaries. Today's HIPPIES can go ahead and live peacefully without being judged as mindless idiots -because they were right after all... and today's PUNKS will be the ones who change the world -because now they CAN. It's all about the attitude and the will. Seeing the big picture makes me so proud. We now know the "why", and we are ready to unfold the "how".
@GassyZuke i don't "hate it" im not hostile about it its something that they genetically have to live with. you are never asked scientifically to prove a negative it wouldn't make sense.
@GassyZuke empathy is not based in love its based in our genetic make up thats why there are the 4 % of the population that are considered psychopaths. WE DO NOT LIVE MANY LIVES UNLESS U BELIEVE IN HEAVEN OR REINCARNATION BOTH OF WHICH YOU CAN NOT PROVE!!!!!!!
Social ties are grounded upon the concept of "Us vs. Them". Examples are family vs. non-family, Britain vs. America/France/Non-British nations, my tribe vs. your tribe or someone else's, Europe vs. Asia, North America vs. South America, Eurasia vs. the Americas, etc. Until we find something outside our planet that we can empathize with and have enough contact with to establish a rapport, we'll never get to a global connection: only when we have a contrast of "Earth vs. Others" will we get there.
@TheGeneralThings That depends on how the brain has evolved. i think we are ready or the big leap. I'm not racist, but i recognize that once the white man finds out the way, the other races follow. So don't worry. Muslims have common sense too.
@TheGeneralThings You're right- to a point. But these binaries exited- pre-internet. Social media - and traditional media like television - has made the world a much smaller place. "Us" and "them" are no longer so clearly defined. That makes a huge difference. The reason we fear, mistrust "them"- is they were strangers, and thus, to be feared. We're breaking down those bounds now - finding the human commonalities across cultures. Not there yet- but bridges (over fences) are being built.
@jewel4chocolate The new "them" could be the those that only have concerns for themselves. We need to begin to see the entire environmental universe as part of ourselves in order to stop conflicting with it.
@TheGeneralThings So said Ozymandias and Lelouch Lamperouge. But 'tis a sad conception, is it not? Must we find a common enemy or create to find peace between ourselves?

but it is not compassion, the act of suffering together.
the example of Haiti is a good one. with technology the world may empathize, but that does not mean it was compassionate.
empathy without compassion is moral self-indulgence.

One basic concept he has wrong in this vid: No empathy in utopia... there is no logical reason for this. Empathy encompasses both positive and negative emotions.

Gbabyway2be 3 weeks ago
@Gbabyway2be The universe is teaming with life. The probability of us being the only bastion of life in our galaxy is literally 0. We find amino acids and microbal life in meteorites. To assume there is no life on a planet we have not sufficiently explored is backward. Assume there is life nearly everywhere, as has been shown EVERYWHERE we have sufficiently explored.

Proposal: rationalising global needs and organizing productions and delivery around it.
Examples:
- One company with thousands of workers can produce all socks needed.
- We produce each year billions of T-shirts.
- And so on…
Agricultural and Industrial workers represent around 20% of the population and we still over produce.
I see plenty of space to organise clearly on minded way an organisation for sharing work, hardness, resources… and saving free time for all.

That tend to show, I guess, that construction of FEAR (of the other, of differences, rejection from the "other team"...) is the biggest driver that opposite to enlarging the feeling of Empathy.

our instinct to survive and succeed trumps all other notions of socialism.
socialism is such a vague concept where it can be interpreted, manipulated, and utilized into many other things. It is easily corrupted for it has no standard, and it has no parameters.
one can dwell on the fantastical things of what this notion "empathic civilization" can provide them, but that's how many sheeps are herded when they cannot think for themselves.
bluevlocity407 1 month ago
@bluevlocity407 I would say survive and perpetuate, that seems to be the biological order of things. But the survival instinct really only starts making us "less empathic" when the competition for resources appears, then is when all our empathy goes down the drain. So, from my point of view what needs to be resolved is this current crysis of of resources which can be solved practically in 2 ways: lower the human population, increase technology in order to create the resources.

This video is really wonderful. Could we all live in one global group? its sounds like a dream. But than i think, never in history was a group that was'nt united against another group. Maybe the definition of group is to unite against others. Maybe we are all enslaved to our own human nature which is to hate in order to unite.
And If not, how could we educate the world to change this mentality?
looking forward for intelegent answers.
Zizipilo 1 month ago
@Zizipilo I believe this is in part due to the fragility part of humans in the video. In fact we are vulnerable and know others as vulnerable therefore we can experience empathy, but the fact is we also fear one another because we know that others can hurt us and we can hurt others. In order to protect ourselves we either retaliate or hurt others first in order to not be attained in our vulnerability. We need to develop the strength to love others in spite of this.
matlabomb 1 month ago

Oh yeah?

TheGeneralThings 2 months ago 47
@TheGeneralThings That depends on how the brain has evolved. i think we are ready or the big leap. I'm not racist, but i recognize that once the white man finds out the way, the other races follow. So don't worry. Muslims have common sense too.
moderjoker 2 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@TheGeneralThings You're right- to a point. But these binaries exited- pre-internet. Social media - and traditional media like television - has made the world a much smaller place. "Us" and "them" are no longer so clearly defined. That makes a huge difference. The reason we fear, mistrust "them"- is they were strangers, and thus, to be feared. We're breaking down those bounds now - finding the human commonalities across cultures. Not there yet- but bridges (over fences) are being built.
jewel4chocolate 2 months ago 5
@jewel4chocolate The new "them" could be the those that only have concerns for themselves. We need to begin to see the entire environmental universe as part of ourselves in order to stop conflicting with it.
