@simisimi9 I see you are losing your temper and argument because everything I said is too evident in any of her videos, she is very camp artist, I feel sorry for her, but I don't feel sorry for her fans because they are the worst people in the opera, miserable, ignorant and disgusting men and as we know Callas fans are misogynist and they are the remains of a young man
@simisimi9 I saw the video objectively, without taking a party of bad faith, but God what a camp artistshe was.
She was corny and affected, making faces when the music starts. And as always a nightmare of vocal flaws , poor Maria I don't hate her, I feel sympathy towards the way she lost her voice so fast and because she died so young.
What I find fascinating about this video (other than the inherent genius at hand) is that, looking to the column of other videos on the right, I see a live clip of Callas singing Eboli. It truly says something when a singer can take on two divergent roles in the same opera and make them come alive like none other has done before. Callas never even sang Eboli on stage, but it didn't matter. Brava Brava Brava. Viva La Divina
Once Birgit Nilsson saw her at the Met for the second or third time ( She had been present with the audience in Naples , Lucia in the mid fities ) and uttered this memorable dictum/phrase : " In a good day she is better than all the rest of us sopranos put together ! " She also said later : " There is no such thing as a second Callas " Callas was admired by all her colleagues because she was such a HUGE ARTIST. The Best, definitely !
Oh, how would it have been to see her live.. -sigh-
This is so powerful and emotional, it gives me total goosebumps. My favourite part is the middle of this aria from 5:50 on.. addio bei sogni d'or', illusion perduta! <3
i simply can't agree with all these raves. Her voice is simply so flawed at this point. If this was any oither singer she would be greatly criticized for her top notes. But the Callas mystique seems to defy everything, even the audio nerves.
@millriv You know, there's said to be something besides sheer vocal beauty and pretty sounds. And she delivers EVERYTHING a sublime performance needs here.
@millriv :-) if she were any lesser soprano, who was a voice only, and not a master visionary, artist and vocal colorist, you are right. She would be criticized for her top notes. Most of us are so darned glad she was filmed at all, if even past her vocal prime. We know the history, and that at this point she did not have the top of her younger days. So we don't expect them. We look for the genius at art, that was still there, and we are grateful for it.
I didn't like her voice for a lot of the repertory she chose, but this is really fantastic. It's amazing to hear all the different type of music she did. Does anyone know if she ever sang the Four Muses from Les Contes D'Hoffmann? She would seem to be one of the few able to do it convincingly for all four roles.
This is my most favorite version. Some people seem to think that her voice is not the most beautiful...I don't know what they're getting at...beauty is in the ear of the listener. Frankly, Elisabetta is expressing sentiments that a sugary-sweet voice would never be able to convey. The depth of sound, sensitive phrasing, sheer force where necessary, expert diction, and the beautiful face and figure of Callas create a most noble Queen of Spain. Thanks for sharing with us. Simply thrilling.
I hate to admit it, but maybe there was sadness and loneliness in her life. She had the perfect technique, powerful voice, but maybe it's that pathos that makes her unreachable. There are, and will be many good singers, but no one will equal Callas, it won't happen.
Boy, she really understands this character down to the bone. If you've ever read Schiller's play, this is about as close as you can get to the true essence of Elizabeth de Valois, given what Verdi's librettists did to the original. Remarkable. Perhaps not the most beautiful vocally, but man, she nails this thing. Notice that when she knocks the rocks off at 9:02 it distracts her for about a total of one half of a second.
Definitely she is unsurpassable; not only her voice, also the different shades of passion she puts into all of her roles. For those like myself, who never had the unique chance to see her live, these videos gives us a glimpse of her mastery! Thank you so much for sharing.
