They probably not getting the high def, thats probably it. The PS3 needs a 60Hz compatibly TV for HDMI, otherwise the signal will downgrade to 720p or even worse 480p.

I have samsung tv and yes it works but my ps3 has some kind of blurrish effect to it... I dont know how to describe it.
