I dunno Doug - sure the late night talk shows play it irritatingly broad and safe, but many a time, Jon Stewart's grown incredibly angry. There's certainly a rage behind his portrayal of Glenn Beck and his coverage of the anaemic response to Katrina. Bill Maher's even angrier still. I guess you just have to go to comedians who specialise in political comedy. Truth is the regular late night chat show hosts aren't that funny about ANYTHING.

@TheConciseStatement jon stewart and bill maher are on a completely different level than leno and that fuck face jimmy fallon. they are a lot more passionate about the things they talk about and they are more of human beings than leno. leno is a sellout, but still maher and stewart are both on mainstream tv, so there is a limit to what they can say and do, whereas people like stanhope, carlin, and hicks said anything they wanted and they were always right

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to bundle the ASTONISHINGLY UNFUNNY Jay Leno, in with political commentators like Stewart and Maher, who are a more niche brand of late night entertainment than the straight chat show.

For what it's worth, I think it's a shame Conan O'Brien has had to make way for Leno. O'Brien can do actual gags - he was a Simpsons writer for Christ sake. It makes listening to Bill Hicks hilarious contempt for Leno on Howard Stern all the more satisfying in retrospect.
