Search scnelind and my channel of videos will come up and there are a bunch of videos of me (eric) doing this kata..... There are also kumite fights in there too.
it's only a training video to show others the whole kata. and you can't expect people with his physiality to just higher then they can. they probely recorded this 20 times before they got the video they wanted
@xxfalcon14xx No disrespect to your young years, but I think this performace has more in it than many of the more modern interpretations of this kata. I have trained with Yahara Sensei and have been taught this kata by him. He is a master of this kata. He won the All Japan Championships with this kata back in 1984 and came 2nd several times before that. His philosophy of one hit one kill comes across very much in his performance of kata, which is as it should be, in that kata and kumite are one!
@johnbsan The problem is that in many cases the Kata is changed so that it "looks" sharper for the sake of competitions or whatnot. Changes like the timings and even starting locations of the techniques (think Hiyan-nidan and how it is practiced now compared to the period towards the late 90s) in my opinion, take away some of what is the Kata supposed to do. The Kata is supposed to be the prep/theory which is why it can, sometimes, look questionable when it is being performed perfectly.
This is a technical kata, im still learning it, but that demonstration, was well done, the jump is hard, dont get me wrong, im 13 and a black belt btw
Yes it is. Depending on which school you are taught, it can have an extra kick. It always is a cresent kick performed in midair. I've seen guys that have added in a back kick after the cresent kick for different application and it still looks awesome.
This kata has to be one of my top 3 shotokan katas. I was taught to add the 2nd 'back kick', if u will, as well. The bunkai is really cool and ur absolutely right, looks very impressive.
Hmm... Definitly not my favorite kata. Very unlikely that you're going to try a jump like that while getting mugged by a couple of thugs, I prefer a kata that makes sense. Still, as far as I can tell, that was done well.
and you learn the things that are to be used anytime, but you have to keep learning more and more advanced things, and at the point where you learn Unsu you should be at the stage where you are trying to do this.
Very good performance! Oss

I can't believe people are negatively criticizing Sensei Yahara's UNSU !!

@karatefella
His reputation is not an excuse to derail all criticism. However, this particular video is pretty great. Of course, it's the form he's famous for.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
He is rushing it too much plus the jump needs to be more higher and more power in the kick because it is vital for the jump to gain more speed

Please post your kata before critiquing Yahara Sensei's kata. He was winning championships probably before you were born.

if you knew the application you would know it could have a place in being mugged

Karate is supposed to be something that may be used anytime, anyplace...
There aren't many people who can properly execute that jumping technique.
Still, I'm not saying this is bad. It's not quite the way I like to do things, but there are certainly room for other interpretations.

Fair enough, fair enough.
I just feel that there are too many things that can go wrong if you're going to leave the ground. So many things that would be more practical.
