    Unfortunately we will keep lowering the standards and do away with gateway assessments. Some call this diploma milling,but others call it no child left behind...at least until they have to perform on the job. It's called kick the can down the road.

  • Agreed. The way of the future isnt a focus on skills needed in an industrial job market. We need students who can be innovative, adaptable, and who are familiar with technology. We need students who are social and productive simultaneously.

    Beyond that, it would also be helpful to integrate democratic principles into every day school governance. Community involvement and awareness. Familiarity with the political process, etc.

    Its no longer enough for kids to sit and listen, test and forget.

  • From NZ: I agree!! We need big changes in education. There are too many outdated DNA Teachers teaching the millenium age children. Let me explain further the geneaolgoy lines that taught and silenced our parents and grandparents from the industrial age are now teaching our millenium aged children!!!

  • Books, tables and calculators are all still very much part of a 21st Century learning but students are not expected to learn through drill and practice. We teach them to ask questions, to problem solve and collaborate. My students are learning about significant sites in Australia. They used Google Earth, they used a blog to connect globally with students in England and they were taught how to discern quality sources of information on the internet. This is 21st Century Learning.

  • Isn't it interesting that we seem to always resort to an either/or mentality. Part of teaching is being open to things that are new and inviting, things that motivate and engage, things that will help learners at all ability levels to be a part of the environment in which they find themselves at whatever capacity or to whatever degree it is possible for them to attain. The world is but a mouse click away. Shouldn't we help our children to discover it?

  • No, we're not advocating burning books in favour of computers. It's about striking the right balance. We cannot ignore the potential of Web 2.0 in creating powerful learning networks for exchanging ideas, knowledge. Abe Lincoln used the technology of his time: books and quills. I'm sure that wouldn't be the case if he were alive today.

  • so let me get this straight...we have to digitize education and put everything into a computer and the classroom has to be turned into an IMAX theater for these kids to learn? is that what were saying now? a long time ago a man named Abrham Lincoln read things called books by candlelight and he became one of our greatest presidents. so apparently teachers have given up on those crazy book things and just want to plug the brats into the matrix. honestly have you all given up?? very sad...

  • I do not think anyone is saying give up books. What people are in favor of is engaging today's learners. If we do not recognize that kids today are different than kids even 10 to 20 years ago, we are not educating ourselves with ways to make learning more meaningful. What is wrong with reading a book digitally? Students identify with it. Change is a part of history and today. Let's not be stuck in the past.

  • I totally agree with the ideas in this video. If an architect, doctor and teacher were teleported from the 1850s to the modern day, the teacher would be the only one still familiar with their own practice. It is time to reinvent the way teaching and learning happen. Social constructionism argues we are all potentially teachers and learners, In a truely collaborative environment - we can be both.

  • Do schools kill creativity? If creativity was a person schools would be it's concentration camp! I think that young people are going through a creativity holocaust perpetrated by teachers especially ones who hate their jobs. Everyone who agrees this is a disgusting inconvenient truth give me a thumbs up. BTW I'm only twenty years old and I understand this.

  • Children depend on teachers to help keep them active in learning. We as teachers has to find better ways of coping with the fact that there isn't enough time in a school day to give each children the attention he or she needs, in order to learn; but providing opportunities for children to work with each other. Teacher has to find pedagogy for teaching that satisfies the requirements of better teaching.

  • Hi Greg! I'm looking at discovery, disclosure, connection and co-creation as key words of a 2D2C construct of learning. John Smith's infinite path of development even comes to mind. For what that was worth.

  • I am a product of the Parramatta Diocese schools and i can recognise some great teachers i know in this film. Including my old principle, and now i am studying teaching and i completely agree with what you are saying, i saw some of the changes brought about by Mr Whitby and i cant imagine how much further he can take education.

  • Maria Montessori was a woman before her time. Neuro-science is proving her work to be completely correct.Her method is education that corresponds with the developmental needs of the child AS THEY HAPPEN, with ZERO gaps in what we consider as "fundamentals". Quality programs are hard to find precisely because of the DNA that you talk about. We need teachers that can apply the new construct of education. I have seen it, and the results are nothing less than amazing.
