This is absolutely brilliant! It's that zone that Madonna and the likes can only dream of: Great actor, great comedian and great musician. We should have cloned him!
Just so good; very fortunate to have grown up in a family where LPs like "Genuine Dud" were regulars on the family stereo. Love his shades of Garner and Peterson, homages them them without ever simply aping them. A massively underrated talent and certainly in my top five jazz pianists.
A great clip of Dudley Moore, Chris Karan and the not to be forgotten Peter McGurk on double bass, once described as being the British Ray Brown...Many thanks for sharing.
He was one of few musicians who could play classical music and jazz equally convincingly. A momentous talent who sadly left us all too soon. It was such a dreadful end for him to be deprived of the ability to make music. We cherish what remains. Thanks for this posting.
I grew up on this music (Mum's gramophone) and have tried to emulate it in my piano playing ever since but it's incredibly difficult. What sets him apart from many other jazz pianists is his depth of knowledge of all kinds of melody, not just from the jazz world. His improv's felt complete and, in spite of his playfulness and adventurousness, he never fluffed it, and he made it look so easy. Damn you, Dud - can't tell you how envious I am.
I've always thought how unfair it was how little recognition Dudley received in the mainstream jazz press; for instance in many a jazz encyclopedia he wasn't even accorded an entry.
For me personally there is a warmth and humanity to his playing just not there in the work of many a big name - I won't mention names.
How nice it is to see so many tributes here at You Tube from the people who listen to jazz as opposed to critiquing it.
One just got to see this small portion of Dudley's enormous musical talent. His other talents beside his (according to J. MIller)" extravagant promiscuous endowment musically" is acting, comedy, and composition. Im not sure if the twentieth-first century is aware that the Heavens gave us another Mozart or Beethoven. ----a pure genius.
@jonjonzf In a way, it was tragic that this abundance of gifts in comedy and in music went to the same person. People failed to take him seriously as a musician because he was a comedian, and they saw him as a second-rate comedian because he was a musician. Neither view is fair. As a comedian he took second billing to Peter Cook (again, perhaps unfairly), but as a musician he was peerless. The counterpoint section at 3:00 could only come from Dud, with his organist's ear.
Dudley was taught by a friend of mine at Dagenham High School. When he introduced me to him I asked him about his music for Six Weeks the film, as my grandmother was interested in it. He said it was never published or put on CD. Thinking that was the last of it we then found in the post a personal letter from Dudley with tapes from the recording sessions address to my grandmother saying "hope you like this". That was the kind of guy he was - nothing was too much trouble..
What a great story, thanks for that, I personally rate him as probably the best jazz pianist the UK has had. Everyone needs to see the DVD with the trio in Australia, it is a great watch. His Errol Garner block chord style is marvellous.
Dynamite! Truly one of the best and underrated jazz trios ever. If you don't have a copy of "Genuine Dud", you owe it to yourself to track down a copy. It's brilliant.
Dudley swinging like a gate the influence of his idol Errol Garner shines through. Ironic that the tune is "I Thought About You" by Van Heusen & Mercer. We still think of Dudley- a great Jazz pianist...
In the words of Ian Drury ..."There aint half been some clever bastards".

If it's not already been attributed this is 'I thought About You' ... and excellent tune by Jimmy van Heusen and the lyric by Johnny Mercer:
I took a trip on a train, and I thought about you/
I walked a shadowy lane, and the I thought about you ... etc.

I am SO proud to be a "baby boomer" and to have been in my youth during the 1960's/early 1970's.
This is "music" and has no relationship with much of the computer-generated pap that we see in the 21st. century.

So thankful to be able to see this. His trio work is quite underated and in sore need of reissue for those who'd love it if they knew about it.
