I think you're missing the point. It's very relevant to compare these vehicles because many people look at buying these NEVs thinking they make good, inexpensive options for getting great fuel economy. The comparison is to show how unsafe those vehicles are when compared to the most diminutive of road-worthy vehicles.
In fact, your thinking that the smart is a glorified golf car (which it's not) only reinforces the crash test comparison. Too many people think these NEVs are road-safe.
All the smart car is, is a solid steel golf cart. Its designed to be a safe alternative to driving your golf cart on the road. Its unfair to compare the two in a crash test.
Forget those almost-cars! How did the Smart car do in this test? It just as small as thos "neighborhood-vehicles", but is supposed to do better in car crashes ? or is it?
