I'm asking this just for my information -- why is this role always played by a woman? I have no agenda here; I just would like to know because I'm interested.

@kangadillo It's because the music is written for a very high voice so it can only be sung by a counter-tenor, a castrato or a woman. Castration is illegal now, good counter-tenors are very rare and good female singers are relatively common, so that's why!

I will playing Prince Orlofsky in my college's production this March. I'm so very glad I won't be bald! I'm glad this is posted to help give me an idea of how to play a rich Russian Prince who is bored with his life (I'm none of those things)!!

On one hand, you're right, 'she IS too pretty to play a dude,' but, on the other hand she looks no more 'like an alien up close with that baldy thing on' than anyone else who's hair is in a bald disguise. But don't forget, they can't cast her on basis of looks.

Great acting in this version of die Fledermaus, and the juggling of languages is just wonderful... It seems the audience even understands Russian, at least some of them do. Impressive! A joy to watch, probably the best version of Fledermaus available. Thanks for uploading!
