One of my favorite songs by Bill Withers along with Grandma's Hands. A terrible war like any other war. A few of my classmates never came back. Unlike today the Army was not all volunteer you got drafted. Or you went to jail if you didn't go and be a draft dodger. I salute all our soldiers who served and gave their lives.
I was at a skatepark in the summer of 76' & looked over to the crowd watching us skateboard...I did a tripple-take when I saw a huge-burly-bearded white Hippie(?)-looking guy with (what 1st-appeared like) a backpack over his arm...But, It was (what was left) of a late-20's looking black-dude in an army jacket...The Guy had LOST BOTH LEGS & HIS RIGHT ARM!, So his 'Big-Buddy' was basically his 'mode-of-transportation'...& 'FRIEND' from the war.
i dont know how many people i have tried to explain how it was to be living in the sixties finnaly i just tell them to sit and listen to some of our music with an open mind because it is really hard to explain how it was unless you lived through it
We will continue to kill each other . Because we hate the very essence of one another. Its sad but true. Find love and you will find peace. Find hate and you will find war.
This was written and performed at a particular point in history. To all people who say "I hate fighting, I hate war!"..: wars are still fought today, I don't see you protesting on the streets and getting shot at by the National Guard.
"Hypocrisy, the state of pretending to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have."
Still, we can all feel for the victims and help carry their burden. Love.
@thechewydude freedom is having beliefs and expressing them whether the national guard is shooting at you or not. Not dying for your beliefs doesn't automatically make you a hypocrite...
@theczechstallion123: war destroys the individual and the family, and on a broader scale, human civilization itself!! THIS SONG captures that so susinctly.. and the images you included are so very powerful. I can't thank you enough for making this.
Thanks bro, great song, great photos. I specially like the one at 4:00, very emotional, strong symbolic art. Would you please tell me the name of it or the artists name. Again thanks.

Only Bill Withers could write a song like this...his voice and songwriting style are inimitable. Wise, cool, poetic and sincere.

War is sometime a necessary evil, one we must weigh against our children lives or more importantly, their freedom.
