Oops, sorry for the double post but in Batman 89 when Batman shoots and misses Joker, I always interpreted that as Batman wanting to, but not being able to bring himself to kill Joker in that manner(just look at Batmans face after he misses, clearly hes pissed at himself for wussing out)
Not to start an argument but it was actually Nolan who wanted Joker to be an anarchist with scars and knives and never says anything funny and all that. I think it was Ledgers performance that made the character work. he added tons of humor, remember all the funny bits when he crashes the party? none of that was in the script, it was all improv due to Ledger. I actually Nolan might have ruined Joker if it wasnt for Ledgers performance
