At the 0:21 mark, I believe I recall seeing that same skyline nearly 20 years ago on an Eastertime trip from Buffalo to Florida(Disney). That time, we came via I-90 to 79, then 77(which wasn't yet completed as they didn't cut it through Columbia yet), 20 West, 26 East. The exit to the left was for 126, and 26 continued to the right, and I recall the skyline at that juncture.
Eventually 26 took us to 95 South for Savannah and then Florida.
This intro was awesome. Reminds me of the intro to a 70s cop show like Hawaii 5-0. I also love that the news leads off with a story about the city council forcing people to pay $5 for a garage sale!
I drove through South Carolina back in 2002 and saw that old flag flying on a rather tall pole in front of someone's house along US 301, a few miles south of the "South of the Border" compound. Right then did I realize that we still have the "old south".
@zekepig And we have stereotyping at its finest from you! Thanks hypocrites of the rest of the US! You see a flag and automatically think something instead of actually using your brain. Stupidity at its finest.
Wow, they even had the good sense to hire a smooth, deep-voiced announcer to segue into the program. That's pretty smart stuff that WIS had in those days.
The smooth, deep voiced announcer was Dave Rogers. He usually did the weather on the 11:00 report if I remember right, and would do the weather when Joe wasn't there. He also hosted "Mr. Knozit" when Joe Pinner was away or on vacation.
Actually, that wasn't the top story. The reason that newscast survives (and is in very good shape!) is that was the first newscast to use the brand new "Instanews 10" live truck, which was revolutionary at the time. I'll have to upload that sometime soon.
WOW. thanks for posting this! Back then, WIS did not have a 6:00 news. just the 7:00 and 11:00 report.
I spent my summers as a child in Columbia and Newberry, SC. Back then WIS was one of two only channels you could get while living in the country. The other signals were too weak.
What a time warp. I would have been three when this aired. It would be interesting if there were any more 70's vintage Columbia, SC clips floating around out there. Thanks for sharing this clip!
what package was this? I always enjoyed this music

I think i got all of the county names in the vid:
Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Bamberg, Barnwell, Fairfield, Florence, Greenwood, Lancaster, Lexington, Marlboro, Marion, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland and Williamsburg.
I did not see Lee, Kershaw, Sumter and Saluda counties. They are part of the modern day Columbia DMA.

Classical Gas mixed in with the drum intro of the Telesound version, pretty good combo.

Stay classy, Columbia!

The Columbia skyline is probably one of the most under-rated skylines in the Southeast. And it's still growing! I miss you, Columbia!

The announcer's name was Dave Rodgers. He also did the weather sometimes, and after TV he became a radio DJ.

Dave Rodgers had the deepest voice in Columbia (or so it seems). As a kid I thought of Lurch from the "Adams family" whenever he spoke.

Could anyone let me know if Ed Carter is still alive and/or when did he retire? He was a fantastic anchorman!

Like that theme music! I never knew that Classical Gas was widely used as a news theme.
Check out the top story. New garage sale ordinances from city council? Slow news day in Columbia, I guess...

Thank you so much for posting this. The Classical Gas theme was also used on Minneapolis/St. Paul's KMSP-TV, Channel 9 back around the same time.

Classical Gas! By far the best hit song to be a news theme!

I am now convinced that EVERY station in America used Classical Gas during this period. But I do like the particular cut used in this clip.
