well, science is progressing rapidly, but as soon as we invent a true AI, it will theoretically have an incredible upper limit in intelligence.. limited only by the number of processors we can fit into it, in effect. It would be like taking an ordinary human brain, but multiplying it by 100s or 1000s of times. Imagine what ideas and discovers and intelligence that powerful can come up with, and thats how fast technology will evolve. within a generation, humans will be obsolete.
@dkerris No I am pretty sure many things are impossible. Such as trying to walk on the sun, or eating a black hole, or cold fusion for example. It goes against the laws of physics. Cold fusion was a hoax in the 20th century and its still a hoax now and it will always be a hoax. Yes, fusion will get cheaper and more efficient over time, but it will never be "cold".
I was never really in to Fringe, I thought it took itself far too seriously, then I caught one of the 80s episodes and this had me laughing my ass off. Now I've pretty much seen 'em all. The best part it's even a catchy wee tune!
They are technically wrong about in vitro fertilization. If these technoligies were considered fringe science in 1985, then IVF had already existed and was being used for 7 years.
the 80's throw back was a really nice touch! because "peter" was a flashback eps. to the 80's. i just love that even with the terrifying things happening on fringe, they ALWAYS add a nice touch!
@gillybabies I agree. If anything, i think the "Brown Betty" episode was filler, even though i think the reason they did was to hint that maybe Peter will be able to forgive Walter eventually...but still..filler.
@claireice I don't think this was a filler episode, it brought to light and solidified a lot of backstory that was only hinted at or partially explained earlier. Now that the plot has a more solid foundation, it can take the next step. However, yeah, I agree that the Brown Betty episode was pretty filler. One of my least favortites, but "Peter" is on the opposite end of that spectrum. Brilliant!
@claireice it may not have been. If you check out the forums a lot of people have found possible allegories and foreshadowing in that ep. Maybe they just want us to think it's a filler ;)
I was so glad to see this new episode! I also want to point out that the Observers we watching "Back to the Future" from the alternate Universe because Eric Stoltz was on the marquee. Its a lesser known fact the the film was originally shot with Eric Stoltz as Marty Mcfly! They shot 1/3 of the movie before they recast it with Michael J. Fox, in that universe that never happened!
In a touch of realism, rather than include only technologies that are now commonplace (like personal computing), they added all the "fads" of the '80s, only some of which have really boomed.
@albertma2005 If you consider the proper '00s Fringe theme, you will notice that many of the technologies in it may be fads now... but will probably never see the light of day, either.
Also, note how nanotechnologies have never moved from the experimental stage of the '80s, and, they appropriately appear in both versions of the theme!
@trustnoone81 yeah but some of them might be part of life in our future, like in the 80's one it says personal computing, stealth technology, DNA profiling, cloning, genetic engineering, laser surgery, IVF, virtual reality. They probably all seemed "out there" just like the modern beliefs, who knows.
Absolute genius. I had it DVR's and watched it like 5 times. Brilliant! (For those who don't get it, it's relevant to the particular episode, which was set in 1985)
Just saw the episode, absolutely brilliant. Normally when they do flashbacks or look into the past, it goes horribly horribly wrong on many shows. But this was one of the best episodes. It had everything. Tugged on the old heart strings.
And the 80's retro style intro just made it that bit more special :D. Loved it!
When i first saw it, i was like...... WWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW.... i almost had an orgasm xD

I think only one of those things in the opening credits is something that hasnt/can't work 'cold fusion'

@limetang yeah you're right, and the answer is can't.

@Anthonyk312 True.

@Anthonyk312 Nothing is impossible. We just aren't smart enough to make it possible now.
But soon. Hopefully very soon.
