what about, if on the inside, you have x^3 + 6x + 5. and on the outside, you have x-4. when i do my first step, i put an x2 above for the answer part, and then i multiply it out. then i get x^3 - 4x^2. but the 4x^2 is under the 6x. and i cant add or subtract them, what do i do? fill in a 0x^2 before the 6x?

@doreilly15 well, you do not have to do that, but it makes everything line up and keeps it all much more organized. a lot of algebra is simply about being neat and organized. i used to be super sloppy; when i took a little extra time to keep it neat and tidy, my grades went up.
