No they're biological sisters. Their rivalry started when they were very young. Their dad gave all his attention to Nina and completely ignored his younger daughter Anna causing her to develop some sort of an inferiority complex to Nina. Since then Anna's entire life revolves around surpassing her sister. Nina herself can be a bitch sometimes (ok most of the times) which also made their rivalry worse over the years.
