When I first saw the Hunchback of Notre Dame, (the Disney version) I liked Phoebus. When I started watching the musical, I couldn't understand why there were so many Phoebus-hating comments.
I finished the musical and read the book. I understand now.

@RacbecSkywalker Well, pretty much every time the story is told from his point of view and he sees Esmeralda and the goat, he thinks something along the lines of ''The girl is not bad, but that goat is really pretty'' xD
@RacbecSkywalker They have an english unabridged version. I'm sure you could find it at a local library or bookstore either in person or via online. I'm not the most fluent at french myself, so I read the English adaptation and it's wonderful! (Gringoire does seem to bond more with Djali than with Esmeralda, I will admit....But he's still my favorite character along with Clopin)
Esmeralda´s last moments on Earth: knowledge that man she loved with her whole heart sent her to death. Somebody kill Hoebus (and yes, it was conscious misspelling! p)
well Frollo didn't 'murder' her...He threatened her with death (after Gringore left) and then he threw her to the 'nun' in the the place de greve and went to get the soldiers so in an elbratoue way he killed her but not directly
@Peadarisback Hmm... I don't remember that part =o But as I recall both Esmeralda and the goat had escaped from the cathedral, and the goat just fled maybe (?) but I don't recall Gringoire being there at the same time as Frollo, especially not on a boat o.o Lolz I'mma read it again too just to be sure ^^'
Maybe it's because he hasn't developed any feeling for her... and he doesn't want to be hang, as well... When Esmeralda saved him, she was in no danger...
By giving away her position, I mean that Esmeralda called out to him (in her naive love for him) and the guards heard her and pulled her away from her mother. And as they dragged Esmeralda away, the mother tried to get them to release her, but one of the guards pushed her backwards and she hit her head on the ground and it killed her. So in fact, it was both Frollo (who had the guards after her) and Esmeralda herself that were the cause for her own death.
This play holds a resemblance with the stroy of Henry VIII who married Ane Boleyn and later on killed her on charges of bewitching him...I think Phoebus did just that with Esmeralda...
In the novel, no. Esmeralda had just reunited with her birth mother (Gudule) and found out what her real name was. But it was actually Frollo, who after trying to get Esmeralda to go with him again, he told the guards to go and find her. Gudule tried to protect Esmeralda and at first, they almost get away with it (because she had hidden her behind her) - but when Esmeralda heard Phoebus' voice amoung the guards - she gave away her position. And that action killed her and her mother.
fact: this song "Déportes" is more of a recisative then a song until the end where Phoebus and the guards (or is it an offstage chorus???) start to repeat the "déportes" and exiled bit.... YES THAT COMMENT WAS COMPLETELY RANDOM AND TRIVAL but I thought I'd just point it out not that anyone needed to actually know that but it is a recsitaive not a song oh sorry I don't mean it turns into a song in the end I mean around 0:20 it becomes a song before that it's a recivsative
recisative is when people kind of speak with music playing like Phoebus at the start of this scene when he's condeming Esméralda to death and outlawing the Gypsies he does that in a recisative then it turns into a song after that
I agree with you, and I'll go one step further: Phoebus is a freakin manwhore. I had many more *colorful* words earlier when I first saw this clip, but I think the word sums it up for me, lol! The actor has an awsome range of vocals though ;) This is an awsome musical!
So are guys playing Gringoire, Frollo, Quasimodo, and also Luc Plamondon, the guy who wrote the lyrics for this musical. The musical was a hit in my hometown of Montreal, so given all this, is it really so surprising?

ok what is this deal with calling Phoeubs an "antihero?" THE GUY IS A BASTARD AND A VILLIAN AND AS BAD IF NOT WORSE THEN POOR CLAUDE FROLLO i mean he had the chance to speak up for Esméralda at her trial yet he just stood there and watched her suffer (i'm talking about the book) but he's no better in this opéra/musical people like Phoebus should be hung and laughed at!
oh and "Notre dame de Paris" is a wonderful musical and the book is the best book ever!

it was Gringore who left her in a boat..
(I think) this is the quote that shows it from the novel (I think)
