@martilook in fact "take on me" was the first song a-ha made(i mean, to promote themselves worldwide) ..if you want good lyrics i tell you some songs from the early albums("scoundrel days","living a boy´s adventure tale","out of blue comes green","rolling thunder","sycamore leaves","locust" and since their return in 2000 "mother nature goes to heaven","barely hanging on","there´s a reason for it","white dwarf"..most of their songs are way above of "take on me".
What are you talking about? The songs are in different keys, have different chord progressions, and use different instruments. Even U2s bridge (the "touch me" part) uses a different chord progression. Even if these two parts were translated into the same key Ahas progression would be (em, c, g, d) and U2s would be (em, f, c, g). Even though these might sound similar to the naked ear by some, they arent. In fact the only real similarity is the words "touch me". So no its not a rip off.
@viperdude281 who cares, you are talking about something that most people dont know and when you heard the "teach me" from bono if you know the sun always shines on tv you immediately think of it,but if you dont know the a-ha song you probably think that its something original the teach me part but is copy from them.and for someone who says that was a tribute to a-ha it was not beacuse when bono was asked about it he says arrogantly that a-ha has always been stolen for them, and that is full of

I respect A-ha, they are a great band, but what I'm about to say was dragged out by all these idiot A-ha fans/U2 haters. U2 are a far superior band in almost every way. "Two words "touch me" and here Bono also sings "the sun always shine on tv". As Bono was asked about this two words he said, that he had the song "the sun always shines on tv" of a-ha some how in mind as they made "a beautiful day". He also added something like "A-Ha is the most underrated Band ever i know of". He is dead right with this statement. You see, there is a kind of relationship between "A beautiful day" and "the sun always shines on tv"."
Here is the similarity in a nutshell where the part in the chorus of the "Beautiful Day" song where Bono sings "touch me" sounds like the guy from A-ha when he sings "touch me" in their "the sun always shines on TV "song ....woop-de-fucking-do other than that both songs are completely different in intro, verse and bridge
God damn. Never heard that a-ha song before, but just looked it up to confirm for myself (friggin top song too!): the similarities are undeniable - not just in the MUSIC, but also in the CHORUSES & the way they sing! @mirnareginaortiz ahahaha sorry i confused you with other guy/girl..you keep your good taste and congratulations for not following the mass opinion in something so special like music..another hug! ;)
I hadn't listened to the A-Ha song in years (nearly forgetting it even existed) and the "Beautiful Day" connection jumped out at me immediately. Both are beautiful songs.
This is a very basic 4 chord progression--U2 plays it in a different key than the a-ha song. I don't see the "ripoff." If this is a ripoff then so are 90% of new songs out there.
Oh and just try to compair their lyrics. with or without you: See the stone set in your eyes See the thorn twist in your side I wait for you Sleight of hand and twist of fate On a bed of nails she makes me wait And I wait without you take on me: reading a book lady brings a new cup of coffee peek in the window she would rather keep on reading Yeah it's really deep and touching lyrics.
And yes I was cynical. I'm not such an idiot ;). It was for fun. But now seriously:
Talking away
I don't know what I'm to say
I'll say it anyway
Today's another day
To find you shine away

I don't think it's ambitious at all. Come on. Just another song about love. I know lot of people like such things but sorry not me. I must be a weirdo. But it's just my opinion. For u With or Without You can be creepy song.
Anyway.. i really like U2, but i have all the albums of a-ha.
I think that u chose to do a silly comparation :-) these early days brought a lot of weird lyrics, and besides, why did u compare such a seriouse (and beutiful) U2 song to an 80s rytmic popular song? most of a-Ha songs are really nice written and timeless in their lyrics and melody, and they got deeper trough time as the band got older.
A-ha and U-2 are my favorite bands and two are from the 80. As you can see I'm a democratic person. Can you tell me the conclusion you about it? I'm curious ...

Martilook, the band A-ha has in its history more than a famous song.
and you are definatley not a weirdo! just need to come up with a different comparation :-)
I'm pretty sure that out of the 100s of u2 songs i can find some silly one's.
Do you know a-ha's songs, besides their hit "take on me"? I know a lot of U2 songs, but I really think you are going to like a lot of the aha's ! i want to show you some but i realy don't know where to start ! :-)
Overall, They really have good songs both famouse and not, want to hear my favorates?
@emarum Even if it is I prefer U2's version. I don't like A-ha. For me it's just another 80's pop band and U2 changed (for me) the music. And A-ha has only one really famous song but everybody has their own tastes.
U2 obviously stole Beautiful Day from a-ha's Sun Always Shines, but a-ha can't sue because Pal Waaktaar of a-ha routinely steals HIS music from obscure New Age artists and the Beatles. One huge difference between U2 and a-ha is that the members of U2 all get along very well. Pal Waaktaar and Morten Harket of a-ha despise each other.
I like U2 but not Bono. I know that sounds weird, but it's true. I'd fall at a-ha's feet just to get their autograph rather then go to a U2 concert. I know U2 have had many good hits and a are a great band, but I just like a-ha a lot more. They are my favourite band. Everyone has their own tastes.
hmmm, the"boy band"a-ha turnd up to be an inspiration for many of the big bands of today,il got all a-ha albumes and just have to say if a-ha was a native english/us band ,well forget take on me and the synth years, this band now is a lot more rock;n roll+ a singer at world class than you ever would belive
i've been screaming it at people for years. and for all the fucking lamo's who talk about relevance; pleeeeeeeease. that died a long time ago with you too
That U2 is "embarrasingly" ripping off "Aha" is this is the dumbest, must pointless statement I've heard yet. Considering Bono merely paid tribute to the Aha song deliberately when saying "touch me". They actually also added snippets of "The sun always shines on TV" on some Beautiful day performances during the Vertigo tour. U2 talks great things of Aha so no more need be said here, really.
This video is so stupid, the melodies are very different at all !, Only concidence is the use of the phrase "Touch me", this can be copyrighted ? The answer is, clearly NO.
I will repeat... you cannot copyright two notes only, those were used in "touch me", how many songs in pop, or classical music used that combination of TWO notes ???,...; Millions...
Better go to check the coldplay true plagiarism... , they copied sequences of 8,10 notes in the same order , from a song of Joe Satriani, they were sued by the author.
Don´t lose time with this, BTW, I'm fan of both bands, since 1985...
I think A-ha is a very underrated band. And U2 overrated. Thinking of A-ha as a 80s teen pop phenomenon is stupid. One hit wonder boybands don't perform in Albert Hall and get Q magazine prizes. I see Bono in every newspaper, and there's no need for Morten, he's talented enough not to demonstrate his "feelings" for African children. Take On Me video was a revolution. Hunting High And Low are covered by Coldplay. Even Liam Gallagher and Leonard Cohen like A-ha.
popmarter is an ass farter. if he cannot find time to listen to the work of a-ha and is blindly obsessed with u2 then he has clearly made his choice and will not be swayed. Both bands are fantastic, with my preference being for a-ha. Their music has many similarities, but I would not want to say who has copied who at times, as there are many cross-overs.
Of course it's sampling. Kid Rock sampled Werewolves of London with All Summer Long, and this would never be described as copying. He sampled his melody...
PS check your YouTube more often... My comment has kinda been here for like a month, so your reply was near irrelevant...
A-HA is the best of the best and you can't deny it!
These 2 songs are not alike all they share is the word touch me then some twat starts saying U2 were ripping off aha,Bolloxs U2 are in a completely different league to aha ,Aha write happy discountable pop songs and are no longer relevent or heard of ,not enough space to describe U2 ,Biggest and Greatest spring to mind.
Ignorance is a bless, ain't it? Have you ever read any of A-ha's lyrics? Have you ever heard what Bono or Adam Clayton have said about A-ha?
Who do you think have been credited as an inspirational source by bands like Coldplay and Keane? U2 might be biggest and greatest on selling records, but get some meat on your bone before you start chewing...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Aha lyrics just like abba's they dont make any sense they just rhyme, most european non Uk or irish acts who dont have english as a first language sing about absolute rubbish they are just trying to be relevant,Aha have one or 2 good songs but are just not relevent anymore dont be so TOUCHY about it.
Somebody is touchy alright. But to get this "debate" on to a more constructive fase:
I still don't think you have enough meat on your bone for making the comments you are doing. To me it seems like you are one of the millions who still thinks of a-ha as a boy band with a one hit wonder. Further, you're showing a bious attitude with a little hint of unhealty nationalism when you are saying non-native speaking english bands can't put a deeper meaning into their english lyrics. (to be contiuned)
But I guess you have a superiour clue on good english lyrics. Better than Coldplay, Keane, Adam Clayton(!), Bono(!), Sarah Brightman, Robbie Williams...and the list goes on and on.
a-ha and U2 both share great successes, very different bands. i've had far more play from a-ha's material - the guys are way cooler than bony and his buddies.
A-ha and U2 share great success? you are clearly blinded by your obsession of a scandinavian band that stopped being rellevant decades ago. Aha can only hope to begin to scratch the surface of the success U2 has achieved both creatively and commercially. Not even close.
Exactly, why would they release their stuff in the states if they remained relevant? I rest my case! I can understand if you're saying A-ha remains great creatively and I wouldn't question that. But U2 is an one of the most acomplished bands and is on another league not just commercially but also creatively. On 3-03-09, U2 is will release their best reviewed and creatively speaking, one of their greatest albums to date.
hear hear. and i wouldn't mind, i'm from U2's home country and even I don't like them that much. they're very in your face, whereas a-ha are much more sly with their song meanings. as they said of 'foot of the mountain', they like to make 'uptempo songs, but not necessarily upbeat songs'. In my eyes, a-ha are so much more than the infamous hit that launched them into superstardom. A-ha will always be the superior, regardless of how much fame U2 have.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hahahahahaha! and who get the grammy!
Viva U2 the best band of the world,(maybe because U2 is not a 'one hit band')but I have to admit, A-ha has like 2 or 3 good songs, but that wasn't enough.sorry
"a-ha was always kind of a misunderstood band in my ears. They were perceived as a teenage group for girls, but in reality a very creative band." (Adam Clayton, U2)
"When we heard U2's "Beautiful Day" for the first time, the part where Bono sings "Touch Me", we thought right away that that sounds like a-ha!" (Keane)
if you look better you could find the solo projects and band projects from the members of a-ha, if you just thought a-ha is "take on me" well we might thought u2 is only a comercial band now, and off course they are not as well as a-ha is more than just "take on me" they are teaching now to a new bands like cold play for an expl.

A-ha is not interested in commerial, success since 2005. Neither has to compete.
For 2009, no more musicians on stage.
no myspace, no facebook, no youtube Official A-ha
Bono insult Chris this week
U2&Coldplay who win ?
lol
HolyGround9505 3 years ago
oh come on. We all know it's not a rip off, it's a tribute to a-ha. Others have done the same, like Coldplay and Madonna. a-ha forever though!

DarkAcrobat 3 years ago
It is not a coincidence. The two phrases are sung almost identically.
StormSays 3 years ago 3
that's right it is obviously NOT a coincidence
natmanprime 3 years ago
I will repeat... you cannot copyright two notes only, those were used in "touch me", how many songs in pop, or classical music used that combination of TWO notes ???,...; Millions...
Better go to check the coldplay true plagiarism... , they copied sequences of 8,10 notes in the same order , from a song of Joe Satriani, they were sued by the author.
Don´t lose time with this, BTW, I'm fan of both bands, since 1985...

Love Love Love by James Blunt is a very plagia of "keeper of the flame" by A-ha
Paul, Magne Morten becomes Bob Dylan
and I need to revive A-ha by beautiful day clip .
give me this cake free thanks
ok any sense for the comment but a riddle
HolyGround9505 3 years ago
They didn't ripp them off, A-ha and U2 are great bands, and I love them both!
Just that A-ha is a bit underrated, but those who know what A-ha is - well they very well know it!
meryuk 3 years ago
a-ha has and will always have my vote there
purely more talented..mortens voice isnt raspy
pauls a killer guitarist WISHED THEYD DO A US TOUR WITH DM -A-HA-U2 AND MORRISSEY THAT WOULD SELL BILLIONS?
rockondon 3 years ago 2
I think A-ha is a very underrated band. And U2 overrated. Thinking of A-ha as a 80s teen pop phenomenon is stupid. One hit wonder boybands don't perform in Albert Hall and get Q magazine prizes. I see Bono in every newspaper, and there's no need for Morten, he's talented enough not to demonstrate his "feelings" for African children. Take On Me video was a revolution. Hunting High And Low are covered by Coldplay. Even Liam Gallagher and Leonard Cohen like A-ha.
daughterof60s 3 years ago 3
There not exactly a one hit wonder, considering Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines are BOTH hits,,,
StormSays 3 years ago
I loved it! Both are my favorite bands!!
anamuxoxo 3 years ago
popmarter is an ass farter. if he cannot find time to listen to the work of a-ha and is blindly obsessed with u2 then he has clearly made his choice and will not be swayed. Both bands are fantastic, with my preference being for a-ha. Their music has many similarities, but I would not want to say who has copied who at times, as there are many cross-overs.
rednick1414 3 years ago
It's not copying you frube, it's sampling!
StormSays 3 years ago
it's not at all sampling,,, come on.. "frube".
emarum 3 years ago
Of course it's sampling. Kid Rock sampled Werewolves of London with All Summer Long, and this would never be described as copying. He sampled his melody...
PS check your YouTube more often... My comment has kinda been here for like a month, so your reply was near irrelevant...

A-Ha are so much better than U2.
Perhaps dead and gone for the medias, but not from the real music lovers.
They became underground with the time, but their three latest albums can't be compared with the U2 one's.
They just not need celebrity as U2.

falconbravo66 3 years ago
A-HA is the best of the best and you can't deny it!
ewela92 3 years ago
These 2 songs are not alike all they share is the word touch me then some twat starts saying U2 were ripping off aha,Bolloxs U2 are in a completely different league to aha ,Aha write happy discountable pop songs and are no longer relevent or heard of ,not enough space to describe U2 ,Biggest and Greatest spring to mind.
popmarter 3 years ago
Ignorance is a bless, ain't it? Have you ever read any of A-ha's lyrics? Have you ever heard what Bono or Adam Clayton have said about A-ha?
Who do you think have been credited as an inspirational source by bands like Coldplay and Keane? U2 might be biggest and greatest on selling records, but get some meat on your bone before you start chewing...

Aha lyrics just like abba's they dont make any sense they just rhyme, most european non Uk or irish acts who dont have english as a first language sing about absolute rubbish they are just trying to be relevant,Aha have one or 2 good songs but are just not relevent anymore dont be so TOUCHY about it.
popmarter 3 years ago
Somebody is touchy alright. But to get this "debate" on to a more constructive fase:
I still don't think you have enough meat on your bone for making the comments you are doing. To me it seems like you are one of the millions who still thinks of a-ha as a boy band with a one hit wonder. Further, you're showing a bious attitude with a little hint of unhealty nationalism when you are saying non-native speaking english bands can't put a deeper meaning into their english lyrics. (to be contiuned)
OstePoppe 3 years ago
But I guess you have a superiour clue on good english lyrics. Better than Coldplay, Keane, Adam Clayton(!), Bono(!), Sarah Brightman, Robbie Williams...and the list goes on and on.
OstePoppe 3 years ago
You don't know A-ha's lyrics good if you say that. And what about Bjork, an artist from Iceland, who's native language is not English?

a-ha and U2 both share great successes, very different bands. i've had far more play from a-ha's material - the guys are way cooler than bony and his buddies.
CJGardiner 3 years ago
A-ha and U2 share great success? you are clearly blinded by your obsession of a scandinavian band that stopped being rellevant decades ago. Aha can only hope to begin to scratch the surface of the success U2 has achieved both creatively and commercially. Not even close.
anacrobat89 3 years ago
A-Ha is very popular to this day in many countries, but don't even release their stuff in the states anymore.
facethewoods 3 years ago
Exactly, why would they release their stuff in the states if they remained relevant? I rest my case! I can understand if you're saying A-ha remains great creatively and I wouldn't question that. But U2 is an one of the most acomplished bands and is on another league not just commercially but also creatively. On 3-03-09, U2 is will release their best reviewed and creatively speaking, one of their greatest albums to date.
anacrobat89 3 years ago
I get it; you really, really like U2.
facethewoods 3 years ago
hear hear. and i wouldn't mind, i'm from U2's home country and even I don't like them that much. they're very in your face, whereas a-ha are much more sly with their song meanings. as they said of 'foot of the mountain', they like to make 'uptempo songs, but not necessarily upbeat songs'. In my eyes, a-ha are so much more than the infamous hit that launched them into superstardom. A-ha will always be the superior, regardless of how much fame U2 have.

U2 did the inverse, very too commercial nowadays.

wasn't it like a kind of tribute to a-ha?
wikipedia:
"a-ha was always kind of a misunderstood band in my ears. They were perceived as a teenage group for girls, but in reality a very creative band." (Adam Clayton, U2)
"When we heard U2's "Beautiful Day" for the first time, the part where Bono sings "Touch Me", we thought right away that that sounds like a-ha!" (Keane)

I THOUGHT "beautiful day" sounded oddly familiar! This explains why!! Nice catch!

if you look better you could find the solo projects and band projects from the members of a-ha, if you just thought a-ha is "take on me" well we might thought u2 is only a comercial band now, and off course they are not as well as a-ha is more than just "take on me" they are teaching now to a new bands like cold play for an expl.
