Iran depends on European customers for 18% of their oil revenues. Countries like Greece, Spain, and belgium depend on Iran for 60-90% of their oil supply. USSR was not just choked by oil supply, but by an expansionism that spread them too thin. So it is EU and the US that have more in common with USSR in this scenario, not Iran.
