@ronsworld250 there are so many great U2 songs that dont get shit....U2 has long since become commercialized and a corporation, a company, i think they lost all real fans at achtung baby, instead of breaking up, their became something they're not, and fucked themselves up, i mean, come on, PoP? what the fuck? Discotheque? is that U2? resoundingly NOOOOOOO, when they fucked up they switched to different fans, people, THE REAL U2 IS LONG SINCE D E A D, today we have a styro foam U2 :(

@Slipper59 why? why the fuck? U2 has gone from small ballrooms to decent size still viewable arenas to ridiculous size stadiums, i think the largest stadium is in rio 200,000 or something, but a-ha! a-ha holds the record for people at attendance at a concert, not U2! not Popmart! and that was back in the 80s, why the fuck would u pay some ridiculous price to see.see what? ants on a stage, pay to go watch a fuckin movie screen? what? u wana sit 100 yards back or further, u didnt see U2

A friend of mine had a pair of tickets given to him for this concert. He did not even know who U2 were. He says this concert changed his life. I believe it!
@kellykinsellives amen to that! no generic asshole wannabe fans who r just at a concert to act like assholes, know nothing bout the band, just doin drugs and getting in the way of real fans, actually, there's probably no REAL fans going to any of the past couple of albums concerts-maybe further back....i think it's at achtung baby where U2 became a totally different band, what is U2 360? Popmart part 2? whats the fuckin point of payin, shit if u cant see the stage, EARLY U2!!!!
@vealshanker Yes - and no bloody cell phone or pods or berries or GPS this or that - just you and the rain and your cig lighter and everyone else around you in ecstatic joy of the moment of this glorious concert.

This is unvelievably well played and sung. As if there was at least 10 of them on stage. And to open a show with such a performance... They're truly the greatest.
BAD saved my life whaen I was a teen. I listened to it constantly.. Old school U@ is awesome BUT lyricaly sp? they have a lot of BRILLIANT songs on Joshua Tree and so on...
I think she only went there (48th floor), but didn't actually jump. Maybe it's a symbol, maybe Sadie wanted to look at the city from above to find out and understand what she had been missing. Maybe up there part of her died ("If I want to live
I've got to die to myself someday") and she realized that there has to be more to life than just being a good girl and lead o good life. Maybe that part of her prevailed which wanted to surrender to this "fire and passionate flame" that was all over her.
It's a shame really, cause the heavy smoking nearly caused him to lose his voice at the late 90's. Good thing his voice still is there, but not on the old state it used to be, like that late 80's early 90's.
I was only guessing really - It just sounded like they were suggesting one "surrender" themselves to God once they reach that point of despair. Only a guess. Very Kierkegaardian?
In case you weren't aware, U2 has been a fairly Christian band esp. back in their earlier daze - I am pretty sure the song is about "surrendering" to God to "find out what you're living for". Amen. I love this song.
Believe me, I will enjoy the yoga. As for your time, why are you wasting it on a U2 page when you believe they are over rated. Spend some time on videos that you enjoy. If you think they are overrated. Don't increase their rating by listening. Maybe I'll catch you on a screen we both can agree on. Til then, pleasure speaking with you.
Hi Yogamom glad that you will. Actually this is the only U2 song that I really ever liked. It is in my opinion very well done. I was curious as to how they would perform it live. Again very well done. Kudos when they are earned. Still in the long run, they are not for me. So how do you like Styxx? Maybe we agree on them or the Fixx??
Leave the man and his ego alone. His talent has provided so many people with so much joy. So to anyone who wishes to knock him, can you do what he does? Thought not. So, did they sell out? No, they grew up, used the passion for good. These guys have a gift and I am thankful that those chose to share it with the world, rather than singing in the shower or playing music in the basement. Until you can offer the world music of the quality. Leave them alone.
Handsandtouch has a point that you need to focus on. U2 are a hypocritical band. They preach peace and godliness yet many of the band members have had mulitple sexual affairs on their wives. Can't wear two hats. Either your the next coming of Christ or just another rock and roll band. And in my opinion they are just another "average" rock and roll band. Obviously they made a great impression on Frank Sinatra when he referred to Bono as Botto. Says it all doesn't it.
It is the age old question: judge the art or the artist? This particularly pertains to rock and roll. So, if we judged all rock stars by their lives (and I am including Mr. Sinatra) all that would be left to listen to is the theme song from Barney. That too, is questionalbe.
At this point we are only speaking about U2 not all rock and roll bands so don't bring all rock and roll bands into this discussion. U2 is highly overrated. Enjoy the Barney song if that is comforting to you while you are attending your yoga classes. Peace.

At what point did bono or his band ever claim they were christ? Give me a song in which they preach marital fidelity, "godliness", christianity or whatever you claim they preach. They're songs are about being being "human." That's why they ain't no christian rock band. Seriously present us with some lyrics to prove your case. If you can't, do us a favor.....SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!
dased and confused, I see it took you two months to come up with this extremely intelligent and wisely thought out reply. Has nothing to do with the lyrics. "ain't no and f'in mouth simply illustrate your lack of perspective. I stated that U2 were hypocrites, very similar to politicians, not that they were a "Christian Band". Have you ever read any interviews or heard them speak. Also the spray painting and defacing of Red Rocks by Bono must have slipped your mind.
U2 song Called "40"..Now shut your mouth and listen....God will see us all through...Psalm 4o..???Do your homework..cbono69 aka..You can call me Chris and i will be here for you if you wanna talk..No hate just us talking..
I would agree but go further, for me the last good album was The Unforgettable Fire. Unlike the previous three lot before UF I only favoured half of tthat albums songs.
I liked them due to their raw Irish take on things, once they became 'Americanised' as we called it or I suppose International I found their music became too commercial and Bono's voice suddenly became half way decent!
It's strange to say, but I prefer by far this concert, the VHS has a wonderful intro. Weather was horrible at that time, but this band reached the top. Every song at RedRock becomes great...
This Video i saw on a saturday night at 4:00am and i was 15 years old..This was my first u2 music and video.Half way through this song made a fire in my soul that made me a man from a boy...Also i had my house burn down and a mother that had a drinking problem..I surrender and found life..This is why im still here and you will to....u2 saves lives..Thanks..Chris..Ps..Im 38 now and been to 33 shows since then..u2 is my home..Make it yours....
As a guitar player for over 20 years,I WILL argue. His guitar is perfectly in tune. At the very beginning he hits a bunch of harmonics (which have weird overtones), and he also slightly muffs one chord. Maybe that's what you hear. You think the Edge would START a show with an out of tune axe?! That would be one very unemployed guitar tech!!
Well, that's a bit of info I didn't know. Thanks for that. I still stand by my statements, though - minus the bit where the guy loses his job. Come to think of it, it's pretty weird how the guitar tech is holding up a Gibson (Explorer?) for Edge at the start of the video, but Edge plays a Fender Stratocaster during the song. Now I know why!
U2 in their prime! They were the tightest unit in rock back then, before Bono got the God complex. I wouldn't bother seeing them now. Did see them in-1981 Boomer Theater in Norman,OK and 1983 @ The Loyd Noble Norman, OK. for all the insults i may get for this..grow up and piss off.
No insults. Just wondering about the God complex. I Still Haven't Found...is one of their greatest and it's sorta gospel. But I absolutely LOVE this version of this song.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No. Bono's ego is too big for fucks sake.
Bono were more spiritual and less preachy with his lyrics. Ever wonder why U2's always on the edge of breaking up? Bono + Ego - The Edge, Adam & Larry + they're only tolerating his big mouth. They were at their prime from '79 to 83. But what do you little chumps know, you were still on your mothers teat and wearing huggie. So yes, please keep pissing and fucking off kiddies..GROW UP. I wouldn't shit on a U2 recording post 1984. Eat my Fuck!
Bleeding between the legs? I just got this randomly. Directed towards me? Well, I didn't know U2 was always on the breakup verge except in like 91. And Bono were more spiritual? You mean Bono WAS more.......dumbass.
You have some serious issues handsandtouch69. You make a somewhat valid point about Bono's ego, but you are a little too pissed about it, and if you want to tell me that there were no good songs on the joshua tree and unforgettable fire(not to mention Achtung Baby) then you are dead wrong. In fact I would say that their work on those albums far surpasses the amatuerish songs from Boy. and by the way you may be older than most here, but you sure sound like a baby in your comment.
Look baby killer, do know this about U2,: the adamantly oppose war, the kind like you do killing innocent women and children and men for oil and George Dubya Quagmire mess. How many friends have YOU lost thus far? Oh, let me guess, i must be a tree hugging liberal right? Yes and no, cocksucker. By mistake and the money offered for my Eduacation i served in the Gulf War of 1991 as and E3 Field Triage Medic. Piss off and find a bullet aimed at you.
Great Music, I first listened this song over a half a year ago, and liked so much. I did not realize that An Cat Dubh and Electric Co were also sung at The Red Rocks. Is this a place in Ireland?
miami, you are sooooo lucky. i make it a point in my life not to envy anybody, but damn i envy you. love to have been there, love to go there. all the best.
I still think 1983 was U2's best year ever... the US Festival was about a week before this show and it was great too! (I was at the SLC show, 2 days before this show, JUST AS GOOD!) No, it was better, because the Alarm played in SLC.
I was 17, we rushed to the front as this song started, what a night. I have seen over 100 shows at red rocks, this is still the best. And they only allowed the torches on the rocks for U2.
Hopefully, if they ever remaster and rerelease live under a blood red sky on cd they include the entire set and not just what was originally released in 83. I hope they make it a deluxe set with dvd/album too!!! War, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby were the top three U2 albums. Saw them later on during the ZooTV tour at Tampa Stadium.
this was the first aldum i listened to i have liked u2 for over 24 years now and they are still amazing and red rocks was amazing concert wish i was there
Thank you

I think for any teenager in the 80s, U2 helped us a lot. There songs spoke to us. And many of them still do.
tacobob89 3 years ago
I was pissed to learn years later that songs were cut from this video! but at least I can see and hear those missing tracks now!

AkakiuszAkakiewicz means she kills her self
she jumped
mark0288 3 years ago 2
I think she only went there (48th floor), but didn't actually jump. Maybe it's a symbol, maybe Sadie wanted to look at the city from above to find out and understand what she had been missing. Maybe up there part of her died ("If I want to live
I've got to die to myself someday") and she realized that there has to be more to life than just being a good girl and lead o good life. Maybe that part of her prevailed which wanted to surrender to this "fire and passionate flame" that was all over her.
AkakiuszAkakiewicz 3 years ago
I wish his voice was still that good.
deeoosee 3 years ago 3
It's a shame really, cause the heavy smoking nearly caused him to lose his voice at the late 90's. Good thing his voice still is there, but not on the old state it used to be, like that late 80's early 90's.
Airborne102st 3 years ago
"gonna die to myself someday" - more Christian references...wo-oh-oh...
jjpme92un 3 years ago
i do not insist, but was only wondering what does it mean: ''She got herself up on the 48th floor and gotta find out find out what she's living for''
AkakiuszAkakiewicz 3 years ago
I was only guessing really - It just sounded like they were suggesting one "surrender" themselves to God once they reach that point of despair. Only a guess. Very Kierkegaardian?
jjpme92un 3 years ago
what is this song about? is it about committing suicide?
AkakiuszAkakiewicz 3 years ago
In case you weren't aware, U2 has been a fairly Christian band esp. back in their earlier daze - I am pretty sure the song is about "surrendering" to God to "find out what you're living for". Amen. I love this song.

Does anyone know if this whole video performance is available on DVD or CD. I want to load them into my MPE

Til then, pleasure speaking with you.
yogamom3691 3 years ago
Hi Yogamom glad that you will. Actually this is the only U2 song that I really ever liked. It is in my opinion very well done. I was curious as to how they would perform it live. Again very well done. Kudos when they are earned. Still in the long run, they are not for me. So how do you like Styxx? Maybe we agree on them or the Fixx??
annerenzo 3 years ago
Leave the man and his ego alone. His talent has provided so many people with so much joy. So to anyone who wishes to knock him, can you do what he does? Thought not. So, did they sell out? No, they grew up, used the passion for good. These guys have a gift and I am thankful that those chose to share it with the world, rather than singing in the shower or playing music in the basement. Until you can offer the world music of the quality. Leave them alone.
yogamom3691 3 years ago
Handsandtouch has a point that you need to focus on. U2 are a hypocritical band. They preach peace and godliness yet many of the band members have had mulitple sexual affairs on their wives. Can't wear two hats. Either your the next coming of Christ or just another rock and roll band. And in my opinion they are just another "average" rock and roll band. Obviously they made a great impression on Frank Sinatra when he referred to Bono as Botto. Says it all doesn't it.
annerenzo 3 years ago
It is the age old question: judge the art or the artist? This particularly pertains to rock and roll. So, if we judged all rock stars by their lives (and I am including Mr. Sinatra) all that would be left to listen to is the theme song from Barney. That too, is questionalbe.
yogamom3691 3 years ago
At this point we are only speaking about U2 not all rock and roll bands so don't bring all rock and roll bands into this discussion. U2 is highly overrated. Enjoy the Barney song if that is comforting to you while you are attending your yoga classes. Peace.

At what point did bono or his band ever claim they were christ? Give me a song in which they preach marital fidelity, "godliness", christianity or whatever you claim they preach. They're songs are about being being "human." That's why they ain't no christian rock band. Seriously present us with some lyrics to prove your case. If you can't, do us a favor.....SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!
dasefxrob 3 years ago
dased and confused, I see it took you two months to come up with this extremely intelligent and wisely thought out reply. Has nothing to do with the lyrics. "ain't no and f'in mouth simply illustrate your lack of perspective. I stated that U2 were hypocrites, very similar to politicians, not that they were a "Christian Band". Have you ever read any interviews or heard them speak. Also the spray painting and defacing of Red Rocks by Bono must have slipped your mind.

not really but rattle and hum were allright and achtung baby wasx ok if you listen to it long enough
rianpop 3 years ago
I would agree but go further, for me the last good album was The Unforgettable Fire. Unlike the previous three lot before UF I only favoured half of tthat albums songs.
I liked them due to their raw Irish take on things, once they became 'Americanised' as we called it or I suppose International I found their music became too commercial and Bono's voice suddenly became half way decent!
mnfinfan 3 years ago 3
It's strange to say, but I prefer by far this concert, the VHS has a wonderful intro. Weather was horrible at that time, but this band reached the top. Every song at RedRock becomes great...

burlearth 4 years ago
No if u listen to the beginning it IS out of tune, Having listened to over 10 live versions of this song I think I know what I hear so Don't argue!!
leewelshy 4 years ago
As a guitar player for over 20 years,I WILL argue. His guitar is perfectly in tune. At the very beginning he hits a bunch of harmonics (which have weird overtones), and he also slightly muffs one chord. Maybe that's what you hear. You think the Edge would START a show with an out of tune axe?! That would be one very unemployed guitar tech!!
muukiithefinn 4 years ago
Ok ok I won't argue with a guitar pro! What do I know, I am just a drummer ;-) lol
leewelshy 3 years ago
Not to pick nits, but Surrender was the 5th song in the set that night. The video release cut the first four tunes. Guitar sounds fine to me, tho.
hibricc 3 years ago
Well, that's a bit of info I didn't know. Thanks for that. I still stand by my statements, though - minus the bit where the guy loses his job. Come to think of it, it's pretty weird how the guitar tech is holding up a Gibson (Explorer?) for Edge at the start of the video, but Edge plays a Fender Stratocaster during the song. Now I know why!
muukiithefinn 3 years ago
in any event this is likely the best version of the song - certainly better than the studio version

Handsandtouch69 4 years ago
No insults. Just wondering about the God complex. I Still Haven't Found...is one of their greatest and it's sorta gospel. But I absolutely LOVE this version of this song.

Handsandtouch69 3 years ago
Bleeding between the legs? I just got this randomly. Directed towards me? Well, I didn't know U2 was always on the breakup verge except in like 91. And Bono were more spiritual? You mean Bono WAS more.......dumbass.
kdvincent1982 3 years ago
go fuck yourself, get an education and while you're at it, change your tampon cockwipe!
Handsandtouch69 3 years ago
dude is there a problem here? do i know you?
kdvincent1982 3 years ago
You have some serious issues handsandtouch69. You make a somewhat valid point about Bono's ego, but you are a little too pissed about it, and if you want to tell me that there were no good songs on the joshua tree and unforgettable fire(not to mention Achtung Baby) then you are dead wrong. In fact I would say that their work on those albums far surpasses the amatuerish songs from Boy. and by the way you may be older than most here, but you sure sound like a baby in your comment.
beersgood7 3 years ago 3
Bono must have rejected Handsandtouch69's sexual advances so he has to cry about it on youtube?
rockpoetDan 3 years ago
you piss off .......and just so you know, Bono had the 'God complex' already back then
carolannej 4 years ago
For your information, Bono had already a "God complex" when starting the band. He just didn't express it much in public, but through his songs.
So, that makes your comment utterly useless, my friend.

I still think 1983 was U2's best year ever... the US Festival was about a week before this show and it was great too! (I was at the SLC show, 2 days before this show, JUST AS GOOD!) No, it was better, because the Alarm played in SLC.
Roobah 4 years ago
I was 17, we rushed to the front as this song started, what a night. I have seen over 100 shows at red rocks, this is still the best. And they only allowed the torches on the rocks for U2.

Hopefully, if they ever remaster and rerelease live under a blood red sky on cd they include the entire set and not just what was originally released in 83. I hope they make it a deluxe set with dvd/album too!!! War, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby were the top three U2 albums. Saw them later on during the ZooTV tour at Tampa Stadium.
