  • 我當年9歲, 記得當年個風好勁.

  • i was 2 months old then!

  • 2:30果段是否由叫"溫泉"的播音員報幕

  • @benbom Yes, now you've reminded me. His name should be "溫泉". I recognize that he's one of the members of RTHK drama team (and so is the first one in this video).

  • 有沒有人知道一海哩等於幾公里!

  • Hi pluto1930,

    1 海哩 = 1.852 公里

  • I was 11 years old at the same year (1983) cat 3 Typhoon Ellen to attack HK. I felt very storng and imposing than cat 1 Typhoon York 1999.

  • That's one more testimony that York's winds were weaker (or much weaker) than Ellen's. I have not experienced winds that strong for such long duration since the time of Ellen.

  • 仲有冇其它熱帶氣旋ge風暴消息呀?@@

  • Actually, I recorded most of the 風暴消息 since Typhoon Ellen from 1983 up to early 1987. I made these "videos" for Typhoon Ellen as a start. Sorry that I have to reply you in English.

  • cool!

  • That's awesome! I never believe people actually record these... I was one when this one happened. I love listening to typhoon news for whatever reason. Thanks for uploading.

I find it funny how the guy kept on repeating sentences.

  • Glad that you enjoyed it. I was not 13 years old yet at that time. It was another very dramatic typhoon experience for me. The previous dramatic one that I still have memories is Hope. I don't remember Elsie of 1975 or Rose in 1971.

I thought that I was a little crazy to record it every hour except 11pm-2am when I fell asleep. But when I woke up around 2am by the wind, I was a little surprised to hear that No.10 was just hoisted.

  • One thing I could not capture was the sound of the wind. It was just incredible!! You could hear the rush of the wind getting louder and louder along with a lot of crashing and flapping sounds from 10 to 15 seconds before it actually arrived. Things were just too excited for me to fall back asleep again. I continued to record the typhoon warnings until the last one at 5:45pm. But I remember that I was getting exhausted by then.

  • dear KK kong:

My name is Leo, i am also TYphoon lover..

i also love to listen Typhoon news since 1983 (ellen), i start to record radio fom T Joe

    1) DO u have records for Ellen (No.9)

    2) Do u have records for Typhoon Joe (before No.8 hosting)?

    3) why u stop recording after 1987

Loking forward for your reply, many thanks

  • Hi, Leo Wong,

It is very nice to meet fellow typhoon enthusiasts this way. I wondered if other people like me out there existed or not back then.

Unfortunately, I could not record the typhoon warnings for Ellen between 11pm & 1am because I fell asleep. I was disappointed about that.

Have you found the 4 videos I've posted for Typhoon Joe? I started them with Joe still being a low east of the Phillippines. I recorded a few warnings during No.3, in addition to No.8 and after.

  • I could not continue recording because I moved out of HK in 1987. Did you continue to record since Joe? It turned out, as we know, there was no No.10 for 16 years until York in 1999.

  • KY:

By the way, are u still living in HK now?

after JOE, i and my brother record the follows:

    (wynne(84), Hae (84) , Peggy(86), Sally (91)Cam (99), York(99), Maggie (99), sure i also recorded those typhoons with #3, 1..

1999 is a wonderful for us as FOur times #8 and ONE #10

do u have any infomraiton for ROSE (71), Elsie (75) and Hope (79)?

  • Dear KY:

how can u upload the radio recording into videos?

FOR ELLEN, i went to bed @9 pm that night , i wake up @1 am and find that # 9 was hoisted

i cannot forget the terrilbe GUSTS from Ellen,, it is quite horrible, other typhoon cannot compared with (even Typhoon York)

For Joe, i mean u seems missing the recordings in the morning when HKO warn that #8 may be hoisted,

, so i would be grateful if u have recordings for that morning...

  • dear johnny:

have u also uploading typhoon news in youtube like ky? thx

    Leo

  • Dear Leo,

Basically, I way I made the videos from tape recordings was to transform the sound to digital form and used Windows Movie Maker to make the video. The detailed steps are:

    1. Install Freecorder - this allows any sound that can come out of the PC speaker to be recorded in digital form.

    2. Use a correct cable that can allow you to connect the audio out from the tape player to the microphone input jack on your PC.

  • 3. Open Freecorder. Check the settings to make sure that there is a check on "Record from Windows input device".

    4. Play the tape. Then click "Record" on Freecorder. You should be able to see sound waves in the record window.

    5. Use Windows Movie Maker to insert and edit the sound clip and add any visual effects you want.

  • Yeah, Leo! Those gusts during Ellen were really terrifying. I did not live in HK since 87. So I could not personally experience York and make a comparison. But many comments I found in the internet (and you) say that York's winds were much weaker than Ellen's.

The wind gusts during Hope were also very loud and terrifying although they did not last as long as Ellen. I was younger then. So that probably made them sound extra terrifying.

  • I remember that I was plotting the track of Hope based on the positions from the typhoon warnings. I remember I heard something like 22.6N, 114.1E across the northern part of the New Territories. It was the first time I ever put a dot within Hong Kong. But after that I could not continue to listen and plot as I was completely overwhelmed by terror because of the sound of the wind.

  • I also remember a period of extremely heavy rain at where I lived (Tai Kok Tsui) when the wind seemed calm. The street was flooded immediately. Do you still remember anything from Hope?

Besides memories, I don't have other records for Hope, nor have I found recordings or written stories in the internet. I did find an audio clip and a video for Ruby of 1964

  • For T. Joe, those recordings are all that I have. If I remember correctly, I had to go to school in the morning and so could not record. Sounds like you don't have that part either. You may have something that I don't. Did you record anything in Ellen? It seems that you didn't. Do you still remember the contents in the No.9 warning.

I look forward to your videos. Let me know if you have any problems with the video making process.

  • dear Ky:

    I have following equipments:

    1) a desktop

    2) a casette recorder

    3) some casette tapes (for recording CR1

what sort of equipments i need to buy or any software i need to install before i follow ur recommended procidures?

  • Let me understand. Are you trying to record, or you already have the warnings recorded on tapes?

  • If I assume that you have the warnings on tapes, you still need a cable that can connect your CR with the desktop (i.e. step #2). There can be many ways to do this depending on the kind of audio output jack you have on the CR. Your CR must at least have a headphone jack in order for the sound signal to transfer out directly.

  • Next, you must find a cable that has a jack that matches with the one on your CR at one end, and with the one on your desktop on the other end.

  • yeah! it seems the Track for STS maggie is similar to HOPE (speed, track)

maggie even cross HK is SSW/SW direction, however, as Maggie weaken to STS @sai kung, no 10 was hoisted

i was very young in 1979, other than sound recordngs, do u have any more expereince for HOPE

  • i live in Wah Fu (HONG KONG south)..

    my experience for Ellen was:

    1) voice for wind come first, after some seconds, the winds really come

    (2) when i wake up @6 am, i find that ELLEN have "pulled away " the steel sticks adhered to the balcony of my home and our balcony is flooded, my pets (tortose) are swimming in water and i save them after battled with the hurricanne force winds

    4) i also saw some tornados in the sea

  • i was very young 1979, my experience for HOPe is that it move very fast (seems moving 2x to 3x knots p/hour)

i forget the force of winds for Hope,

however, i remember my ears were very painful

as i live in Hk side, it seems i cannot observe any "calm session"

can u tell me what is teh link for VIdeo for RUBY (1964)?

  • thank you for ur detailed steps for me, however, it seems i need buying some hardware/equipment?...

  • The video is in the RTHK web site under special/beijingolympics/if2_1964torch.htm (please add the main address in front as Youtube doesn't seem to allow web addresses in comments). The olypmic torch survived a direct hit from Ruby that year.

  • Yeah, Leo. Your descriptions of Ellen's winds are similar to my experiences in Tai Kok Tsui. You could hear the wind gusts coming long before they actually got to you. And, wow, you could see the sea and a few tornadoes also!

  • Those that I wrote were just about what I experienced during Hope. The most vivid memory was that, for at least a couple of hours, I was trembling with fear because of the wind. I was also afraid that the flower pots in an open rack outside of the window would be blown off and crashed into the "Dai Pai Dong" below. I asked my mom to move a few of them in. But she could not get to the one farthest away. That pot did not crashed down the street. But all the evergreen leaves were stripped off.

  • By the way, there is a Youtube video on Wanda (溫黛) of 1962.
