@MrMW2nd it wont end at night anymore. the 500 starts at 1:00.  the only reason it ended at night in 2010 was because of the long delays for the pothole. the night was awesome because there was more grip but it doesnt matter now because the repaving made daytona have a lot of grip, anyway.

I was 13 years old when I was watching this race. One of the greatest Daytona 500s ever. Tragically, the race was overshadowed by Dale Earnhardt's death. But I will never forget Michael Waltrip's stunning win, 49 lead changes, and the 19-car crash that left Tony Stewart airborne.

I was at this race."fireball roberts tower".i live here in tampa so daytona isnt to far,, i love Nascar and go every year for the twins and the 500..and the pepsi 400 in july,but without dale sr its just not the same....so "RIP 2 the man in black",, how did ya like talladega last week?? damn good race huh??

@quasiphatpaul I've watched it since then. I know about the ratings history. The Daytona 500 surpassed the Indianapolis 500 in ratings in 1995 and they haven't looked back. Back during the CART (before they dropped the CART name) vs. IRL days, I preferred CART in the 98-02 days. They had more likable drivers and teams IMO. I've never been a hardcore OWR fan though. Not really a fan at all. And that comment I made 2 years ago was about the current IRL, not a generalization of OWR history.

People just forget that at one point Nascar was small potatoes next to CART in America and that worldwide people watched CART and hadn't even heard of NASCAR. Now obviously I watch NASCAR too. Even F1 has gotten boring tho. It seems every racing league accept mayne the Isle of Man TT seems to be past it's golden age.
