@Wolfsky9: actually this song predates Brian's '76 comeback. It was first recorded at Caribou in Colorado as you say, but before 15 Big Ones and Love You. Brian and Carl wrote the song. I think there was an additional lyric, which Brian mentions in (I think) the 1976 Crawdaddy story by Timothy White.

I'm a railroad buff and the "Burlington" refers to the old Chicago, Burlington & Quincy" (famous for the Zephyr) or "Burlington Route"...also what the "B" stands for in its modern-day descendent, "BNSF". My great-grandfather worked for them, and I've always been a fan (just like with the Beach Boys). Now you know :-)
@burlingtonbill1 I know it well. CB&Q, then BN, now BNSF. Been a railroad buff and model railroader since childhood. I grew up with the eastern roads in PA like Reading, PRR, B&O and CNJ. Nobody in my family ever worked for a railroad or even had an interest. I must have been infected at a very early age. Are you a modeler?
Because the BB's all knew this masterpiece was ALL CARL, it was done onstage only briefly. There is just no way The Guys--at the time--could do this note-perfect, as Carl did, much less: who would hit the Falsetto, knowing only Carl could do it as it is on record?? Carl's concern over his Brothers & thier demons--plus his own struggle with Annie & he divorcing--all led him to : 1. Leave SoCal, for Colo. & 2. Record his solo album, in Late '80. Wolfsky9
Uhhhh folks--are you all aware that this song is --completely, totally, Carl Wilson?? The Falsetto, The Backgrounds, the guitars & drums, are ALL --ALL, Carl. He did this himself, frustrated by the guys & his older Brother especially, unwilling to do this, NOTE-PERFECT. So, he did it himself. Listen carefully. It's all Carl. Wolfsky9
When this BBs song came out, it was astounding as a long-lost harmony sound by The Boys. In that context, it was largely regarded by many expert, longstanding fanatic followers of the band - at that time - that THIS SONG constituted their BEST piece of sweet-harmony work in a decade. It still stands the test of time today. And we need to hold on to it, as anything else that'd be precious to us, because this pure, peerless harmony calibre of sound will never ever be created again in the future.
@colindominy I actually enjoy the LA Album. Not groundbreaking or amazing but pretty at times and very relaxing. Except for that stupid disco song. Oh well. The real horrors int he band only came after that album.
@colindominy Uhhh, I am truly sorry to say this, but it needs to be done: this is NOT==NOT, The BB's. This is Carl Wilson! Lead, Falsetto, Backgrounds, & instruments! Listen--just listen closely. In '79, Carl wanted the B oys to do this, but he could not get everyone together, & BW was so erratic in his singing, that At Caribou Recorders, he did it all --ALL-- himself. Just Listen closely--tell me who's Falsetto that is. Wolfsky9
@rpm88able Sir, I have 2 sources : 1. My own ear --from the very 1st, the song sounded like Carl, all the way. 2. Good friend, who knows more BB info. than I ever will, & who lives in Colo., knows people at Caribou. This was not done at Miami, where the group attempted to do much of what eventually appeared on " LA -LIGHT"--this was done by Carl, fed-up with BW's erratic singing & the disasters of " Big Ones " & " Love You"--total bombs, especially BW's singing. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 Mr Wolfsky, this song was made for the BB L.A. Album which was not a big hit for the boys. This was the come-back for Mr Bruce Johnston. Anyway this was problaby the best song out of the album!
This should have been a much bigger hit, but it was released at the height of the disco era (1979), and it sounded a little too retro to appeal to many people. I remember liking it so much that I went right out and bought the album.
@OceanKingNY right on. my senior year in high school. my mom was a huge beach boy fan. me, not so much. but i heard this song, and loved it. i bought the album out of curiosity, and within a few years, I was a beach boy fan like my mom.
The great CARL WILSON voice...... blows us all away once more on this one.
Background harmaonies 100% retro BEACH BOYS.
Add to the mix that this awesome post is produced by MrTrashcan1 ................ and being familiar with HIS story and appreciating HIS body of work, we've got ourselves another YouTube treasure here. THANK YOU MT1.....again.
You're in a CLASS of YOUR own;
just like the legendary Brian Wilson and The Boys Of Summer.
@mysterytrax Couldn't agree more about Carl and the boys, and very much appreciate the kind words, Ed. And I'll even cut you a break on the typos. LOL
@mysterytrax Uhhhh sir--U R aware I trust, that this is NOT--NOT, the Beach Boys--this is Carl--Lead, backgrounds, falsetto, guitar & drums. ALL OF IT, sir, is Carl. All of it. Actually, anyone who knows the sound of The Beach Boys, would know in 30 seconds or less: it's ALL THE LATE--GREAT, CARL WILSON. PERIOD. That's not BW's " whine falsetto"--it's Carl. Great, great song, & it's also part of why onstage--it sounded so different!!! It's all Carl. Wolfsky9
I saw the Beach Boys several times in the 70's. The concert where they showcased this song was by far and away the best. Berkeley Greek Theater. Another awesome tune they did that day was Sumahama. That and Good Timin' are two of my all time faves.
As long as there is the season of summer somewhere in the world someone will be listening to the legendary Beach Boys! Thanks guys for all your good vibes!
This is indeed an under appreciated and overlooked Beach Boys tune. Reminds me vividly of summer vacation in 1979 camping and lying on the beach. Why wasn't it a bigger hit? I think you have to remember the times. Disco crap was all the rage...songs like "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls" by Donna Summer..."Good Times" by Chic, "Ring My Bell", etc. One of the worst periods for popular music.
@michaelpc64 No, one of the GREATEST times in music! Disco was great, Post-Punk and New Wave were happening, great Pop music, Hip Hop was just coming up, and this late period Beach Boys masterpiece was one of the great things happening!!!
hay man, just wanted to say you did a great job on the video. I listened to your song and then watched a live performance of the same song. It is amazing what the studio can do for the sound.
@MrTrashcan1 I used to think so too until heard Boston in concert, also Fresh Aire (Mannheim Steamroller). It just takes a ton more effort in concert to try to come close & most don't apparently make the extra effort. (continued)
@MrTrashcan1 If you want to be absolutely BLOWN AWAY by how great the concert sound can be in a Beach Boys context, listen to the harmonies on the Fendertones' Dance Dance Dance, here on youtube. It just takes a BUNCH of people to attempt to replicate Brian's studio mastery and layering!
Unfortunately, no Beach Boys song released after 1966 gets much play on oldies stations. In fact, the only one I've ever heard get played at all is "Do It Again".
I think this track more than any other shows how important Carl Wilson was to the Beach Boys! He covers the parts Brian would have taken years earlier.
I'm not sure i think it is Carl... by 1979 Brian had totally lost his beautiful falsetto so i guess its Carl but maybe Al too who knows. Those harmonies tho... only the beach boys!!
@bobshenix - I don't think Brian had lost his voice by '79 b/c I saw them sing 'Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring' for president Reagan's 2nd inauguration in early '85 and it sounded like he still had it. Either way, it's definitely Carl singing the harmonies in this song. His voice may have even been a little purer than Brian's but that's totally splitting hairs as far as I'm concerned. Sweet song. :)
This is my all-time favorite Beach Boys song - and I, too, cannot believe it wasn't a hit. It was on the juke box at my favorite hangout, and me and my friends would have a few pops and sing this at the top of our lungs. GOOD TIMES - !!
This is Fantastic........One of the Best Songs they did........What a Great Time it was to have grown up with the Beach Boys songs when I was in School.
i to cant see how this one got over looked.i discoverd it by accident when i bought there greatest hit cd.but now when i play it i open my H.S year book from 1974!!
why this song wasn't a hit I'll never know. It sounds fantastic, there are so many beach boys tracks from the 70's on that are so horribly underrated, and I really don't know why.
I have asked myself this same question over and over and over again. This indeed was some good music. I love and appreciate this song so much. Oldies, but goodies. It's where it's at. Love it!
Man first time I've heard this and I gotta say it doesn't just rank high in the Beach Boys catalogue...it ranks high in the catalogue of ALL music! Thanks for posting this treasure
trevor do you happen to know who is doing the whooo whooo in the background of this song . It doesnt sond like Brian. Carl is singing lead. Id appreciate it if youd let me know if you know. Thanks
@MrTrashcan1 I totally agree. It's my all-time favorite, even though it's splitting hairs. They were in effect a barbershop style group set to rock n roll music. They're tight harmonies just can't be beat!
This song was so out of its time. It came out in about 1979 and really belonged at least 10 years prior to that.
