on roads like this the main problem (that i've experienced) which causes accidents to happen are the assholes who don't turn off their high beams when approaching oncoming traffic. it doesn't matter if you look towards the bottom right of the road for markers, it still blinds you. I've almost ran off the road because of some dumbass in his truck who blinded me with his highbeams, I wasn't able to see that the road was beginning to curve. which almost resulted in me driving into trees
What will happen when..another S class or other car which have night vision going towards me...Did they be to White that i cannot see anything on my NV Display..
lol sry guys u cant get blind from other cars using IR because in military we always us IR googles and we always have to look at our squad leader for commands, and we look at each other all the time, u cant get blind!
bullshit, doesnt make anything... incoming transport will blind the IR nightvision and u wont see anything, BMW's have thermo cameras that can show u the heat from as far as u would recognize warm human or animal from far
BMW doesnt use IR dumbass, it uses heat camera, yes its not that sharp but oncomming cars dont blind the heat camera as much as Mercedeses IR and heat is way better because you can see much further with it
people have always asked me why i bother paying 60000$ for a car. well i now have some practical reasons why. when is you tube broadcasting in hi def.
Wether or not it's needed, that is the beauty of innovation, use the technology to come up with better technologies for tomorrow. I am sure that system came from the military's use of night vision way back which is available to the mainstream for hunting, ect......
Same with GPS, used/controlled by DOD, and now used by mainstream.
On more thing since I ran out of text space... What happens when two vehicles that are both equipped with this system are approaching each other from opposite angles. It would seem that the infra-red emitters that are set at high intensity and also a wide angle would blind the system on both receiving vehicles .. correct? If it were set up as a small screen then no big deal. But if it were done right with a HUD then it'd be a problem washing out the driver's site completely = BAD. No can do?
The contrast in brightness between the tiny screen and the real darkness of outside would screw up you're vision and make you rely more heavily on the tiny screen. I see that as a supreme negative. They need to integrate a true heads-up-display that more accurately blends with the real image of the road and only Hi-lights warmer objects such as humans, animals, and vehicles. Even the roadway would be enhanced since usually it is warmer than the ambient air or dirt/grass if it's concrete.
nothing new its just becomming more common place to see Near infrared, thermal imaging and gen3 night vision light amplifiers on the market, all have their uses and place in th scheme of things,i have had the near IR imaging system in my cars since 1993 and they were all home made from off the shelf OEM items.the further you go into the IR band you cant use silicon sensors which only go down to 1280nM,but cryo cooled germainium extend into the micrometer range hence thermal imaging.
This copy Lexus infrared night vision introduced in 2003. Cadillac was actually the furst but used thermal imaging so it wasnt that good. Lexus technology is being copied by BMW and Mercedes.
BMW are using Pathfinder by FLIR which is a military-grade infrared imaging camera that needs no extra light (can operate in complete darkness and give you exceptional vision) and Mercedes' fairly crappy system (it can be dazzled by reflection and relies on there being an original source of light since it operates on light amplification using IR projection from the headlight cluster.
It's the auto industry, everyone copies eachother at one point or another. Think about it. Mercedes-Benz was the first to put air bags in their cars, as well as ESP. And now every Lexus have air bags a ESP. So who copied who?
I have a benz and i would hate to think how much benz would charge to repair that if it went wrong. I have been qouted circa £1200 just to fix a bloody sunroof. Repairing that would bankrupt me. Thanks but no thanks.
This is a pretty bad system. A number of other brands are using the thermal imaging from FLIR, much better system as it does not need any illumination (no blinding other drivers using IR). It also doesn't need headlights to be on at all.
think of what the purpose of the anti-tv laws are... to prevent the driver from keeping his eyes from the road. with this, the driver still has his eyes on the road.
put your full lights on and you wouldnt need this...

Useless. This video assumes the driver doesn't turn on the high beams. Who would drive in total dark with low beams?

Waht happens if a second car with IR lights comes on the other side of the road? will you be able to see anything on the screen?
Zmaul93 2 years ago
the screen vision will be blinded with IR light of the oncoming Merceides unless the light is projected in a controlled manner like our head light do
igogosh 2 years ago 5
it will just show up normally, you cant get IR blinded from someone else using IR "headlights"

The BMW system uses passive IR meanng that it won't have a sharp clear imagage like the Mercedes one..
And BMW makes ugly interiors but nixe exteriors..
But BMW is better then Lexus

contrary to that, it would be brighter if the upcoming car adds light to the scene. Do your little research and find for yourself.

Would be better if they could project it onto the windscreen ... and if it fails, well you can still see the normal view.
