  • Great finger, key, and ear training all in one. Thanks this is a good one.

  • Thanks a Lot! Really useful and simply explained. It is appreciated!

  • WERY GUD

  • TABS PLEASE

  • @Deadfishization Tabs are available on my website.

  • @thrip thanku

  • @thrip thanks! I've been trying to build speed and trying to hold the pick correctly but don't seem to make progress. Any tips?

  • @musty911 It's just a matter of practice unfortunately, stick with it and it WILL happen,

  • thanks so much

  • why the fuck would you want to play gippo/pikey music?

  • @SamyazaLovatt why the fuck would you want to look at a video about it?..

BTW Einstein, this isn't "Pikey" music. You wont see the local pikeys playing it, in whichever part of UK (i presume) you're from. It was adopted and traditionalized by European gypsies after the death of Django Reinhardt, who was a gypsy, and is now known by the name 'Gypsy Jazz'

  • @dylanlawless1 I always like to look at net haters channels - With songs like "Vomit the Soul". If he likes it, fine, but don't go spamming people with different tastes. I don't usually like to get into flame wars but today I'm fed up.

BTW great video and I'm going to apply myself to these excercises.

  • @dylanlawless1 Sorry dude I was referring to the other guy, not you - reading my comment back it does seem unclear. Anyway, keep thrashing, both gypsy and hardcore!

  • @dummyguava cheers. *comment removed ha

  • @SamyazaLovatt u another chav then that doesn't understand the talent of being able to play real music

  • Why in gypsy picking down stroke is used to pick the strings upward?

  • @SunE6792 it gives greater volume and tone whilst enabling the arm to remain relaxed and free of tension

  • @thrip Thanks. I'll try that.

  • Thanks. I have been hoping to learn something about gypsy jazz guitar but can't find exercise. And I have no idea how people improvise so well. I am going to practise this and see what I can find.

  • @SunE6792 have a look at my other videos for some more gypsy jazz lessons - good luck!

  • so is gypsy jazz (in your opinion) kind of like a classical/jazz hybrid?

  • @y2zgt Not really, it's essentially an offshoot of swing jazz which draws from other European music such as musette and to a lesser extent classical and folk.

  • @thrip interesting I am a young guitarist (early 20s) and have just recently gotten into all sorts of jazz. Jazz is so diverse and the musicianship is fantastic.

You are a great player. thanks for the uploads!

  • @y2zgt You have good taste, jazz is the best music in the world, unfortunately the vast majority of people on the planet don't actually realise it! The best thing about gypsy jazz is that it's specifically guitar music whereas in other types of jazz the guitar can be considered as not a proper "jazz" instrument (not by me I might add) Good luck with your studies!

  • @y2zgt No, It's a blending of the traditional music of the Manouche Gypsy tribe with American jazz, which was imported to France before and during World War I. Django was a huge fan of American Jazz, especially the music of Louis Armstrong... as well he should have been.

  • Should I use rest trokes on this practice?

Is everything here involved in rest strokes?

  • @kongman91765 yes, and yes!

  • @thrip Thanks! By the way, your exercises really help!!

  • Hahah the start of that sounds like Mr Sandman...Thanks for posting though!

  • wonderful exercise! So straightforward!

  • Those are diatonic 7ths right?

  • @Xmalibur Yes that's correct.

  • Good exercise

Can also apply the same process for all the other modes and scales

    Thanks

  • As the yanks say 'Love ya work....'

  • does this work for pure alternate picking too??

    i don't like economy picking....do i have to?

  • i mean...i like using it when i'm going accross more than two strings....but when i'm just jumping from one string to another then i use pure alternate. but if i "sweep" accross 3 strings or more, i use alternate.

  • You can use what picking you like! If you want to play gypsy jazz though you should seriously think about changing your technique.

  • @thrip

what about my technique? this is my technique:

my hand is in a loose fist.

pick between my thumb and my index finger.

    i use a 2mm thick pick

my hand does not touch the strings or the body

i pick with the rotation of the wrist.

is that not pretty much the gypsi jazz technique.

my only question is on alternate vs. economy. i use economy only when i'm sweeping across 3 or more strings.

shouldn't you separate strings in 2's and 4 notes per string if you want to down stroke everytime?

  • @SwampAshHSS you should avoid using alternate picking. sometimes two downstrokes in a row is unavoidable. other than that I'm sure your technique is fine, a little hard to say without seeing you play.

  • @thrip hey! nice guitar playing. could you please tell me what kind of gypsy jazz guitar that is please? i know there is one more with a big soundhole. this one looks nice. would you so happen to know any being sold in singapore? thanks

  • @joshua9312 It's a fourteen fret oval hole made by Godefroy Maruejouls in London. You should be able to get Gitane or Cigano gypsy jazz guitars in Singapore

  • I'm very much into gypsy jazz, being a smooth jazz player myself i really want to integrate this into my own style, so could you please let me know what the theory or idea behind gypsy jazz please, and i really enjoyed your playing :)

  • @Stratmaster17 Thanks! It's a difficult question that I'm not really able to sum up too easily, but I suggest you get lots of recordings of Django Reinhardt and attempt to copy what he's playing. Good luck!

  • i would just chalk it up to alot of substitutions....everyhting is also directed twords sound....the shape, and size of the guitar, the way you hold it, keeping your arm off the top and all of these things come into a large account here....to get the sound your looking for you need to do it all right....go online and search around for these things....substitue alost of major and 7th chords for 9ths...and add in your own notes when your looking for the right chords...i wish you luck =)

  • And so is my talent!!

  • his pick is to thin

  • this is a great exercise! thanks

  • Even though i'm a rock player & couldn't even begin to comprehend Gypsy Jazz, i found this a extremely useful & practical exercise.

    Thank you for sharing!

  • Thanks, glad you like it. The only thing gypsy jazz specific about it is the picking. Other than that it should be useful for most players!

  • Thank you for sharing this practical technique. You are an excellent teacher.

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you so much.

  • This is wonderful! Thanks! Can you post more?

  • Thanks. Hopefully have some more stuff up soon.

  • What brand and gauge of strings are you using?

  • I'm using Savarez Argentine .10's

  • Best strings eva made!

  • nice exercise, thanks !

  • Nice patterns. to me, this video really shows how much difference in sound a gypsy jazz guitar makes. (or whatever they're called).

  • nice man

  • This is a great picking exercise. Thanks for sharing; I've printed the PDF and am working on it.

    Best wishes from Chicago.

  • Glad you like it - thanks for the feedback.

  • thrip, that is too diatonic, i want your pat martino chromatic licks!

  • Your never going to let me forget that, are you?! :)

  • You are a guitar god...

  • GOD ! THANKS !!!
