As great a singer as Phillip Bailey is him singing Maurice's part still leaves something to be disired. In fact this version of the song is SORELY missing Maurice's voice. Maurice White is underrated as a singer
@johnkeller123 yes you are right I thought it was just me I went to go see them in Atlantic City Nov of 2010 and drove 3 1/2 hours. You can just see the energy of the band as if they were doing it for the money and not the legecy of EWF. that was my first time seeing them I wish I could had experience the band when Maurice was still performing.
@rockjohnson80 Yeah, they did have trouble with the vocals. It is hard trying to sing Maurice Whites parts. He has such a powerful voice & it very hard to duplicate.
@noinwe You are right. It's a shame, but these guys are a pittiful excuse for Maurice. He had so much fun singing, but these guys sound awful. There was a band in my home town (North Wilkesboro) that did a cover of this song. They were great. Maybe these guys should look them up.....lol.
For someone that has been playing as long as Verdine has I would imagine that he may have become a little complacent and jaded given time. His performance and technique has surely suffered the ravages of time....but even with that...he still remains a consummate showman. Here's a little "education" for ya on what he has done in the past Dude!
Type in "Earth Wind and Fire New World Symphony" and listen and be silenced!
@sglov25 I love Verdine but that solo on "New World Symphony" is similiar to the solo from California Jam...I know one thing , he gives 120% on stage ...
Old school chick and cosmetologist here...Verdine's hair is NOT a weave. For those of you who remember, his afro was HUGE...with his grade of natural hair and the help of a professional, yes it's true, he can wear his own hair straight. Not all blacks with straightened hair have a weave. Chaka Khan's hair was all hers back in the day before anyone even wore weaves (although lately, she has been wearing a weave). Back in the day it was afros, your own straightened hair, or a wig.
I am a bass player and i almost value that thing more than my house but if Verdine needed it I would give it to him as fast as humanly possible for KEEPS, also EWF is still the bomb just wish Maurice made a miraculous recovery and gave em that edge they need this and almost all the songs they have ever made sounds better with "Reese"
RE: Maurice, you're absolutely right! I made this very comment to someone the other day. Really miss his voice. Wish he could still perform.
And I love Verdine, truly. His playing influenced me greatly (I'm a bassist, too), but the man should not solo. His solos are just awful. I really appreciate him putting on a show, but he should just play a groove or something -- it's what he does best.
when ever i need proof that EWF's horn section is the best i always use the first 20 seconds of this song.
that transition is amazing

Wasn't he a classical bass player? If so, I would expect better chops!
