I have an albino pygmy and she is the sweetest creature in the world. They make the best pets and with most animals you don't really have to work to bond with them. It makes a bond with your hedgehog that much more rewarding.
@low91rex when the hedgie give birth, you will notice that their hoglet's quills haven't creeped out from their skins yet. I saw once when my hedgie gave birth, her hoglets still have this chicken skinned, but then a few minutes after birth, their quills started growing but still looks like pig's hair (to me) so not that sharp yet. then eventually they undergo quilling until they reach 3months.
Wow they look so odd as babies. Like little curled up Cacti lol. Very cute. Love how at the end the cockatiel flies over to the parrotlet. Nice birds too.
@superfreak150 as long as he is eating and sleeping well then you're probably ok. Keep an eye on him for a few days though, make sure he eats and drinks and sleeps well.
@vampiregirl12234 there is a lot invovlved in hedgehog breeding. If not bred by a certain time, their pelvis can become too small and fused and if you try to breed them later, the mother won't be able to give birth, resulting in her and her babies dieing inside her. There are many other reasons breeding them is hard as well. I suggest you do much research.
Hey Earthling just wondering if you can answer this, I have 2 hedgehogs which are both Albino. If they have a litter will they all be Albino? Please answer thanks :)
@earthling1984 Yeh I didn't plan to breed them but one cage broke and we had to keep them together for a few days and now there is a chance she might be pregnant sooo..Thank's for the reply though :)
protective mommy, when the youngest that is safe to handle the babies without mom neglecting or killing her babies, if mom did start to neglect the babies how would you feed them and would cow milk in a eye dropper work? lol runs to check on babies when you put the house back in, what a good mommy, also when would you recommend to start breeding a hedgehog i have a 5 month old albino pigmy haven't gotten a male yet, and how do you mark which babies where birthed by so and so?
@closer2u616 just keep working with him. Take him out of his cage, but if he bites you, instead of holding him, put him on the coffee table or couch and just be near him for a while every day so he gets more and more used to you being around.
I like the little babies also I have an African pigmy that likes to bite candle wicks and the won't bite lots once they are used to you and you handle them correctly if ur thinking of getting one
@anticonformist1366 Every one has their own personality, but most are very calm and easy to handle. It all depends how often they were handled and how they were raised of course. Their care is similar in the fact you need a cage, food, and water, but their food is much different.
So when u said put her on a coffe table to walk around do I pick her up with bare hands or do I use gloves or a towel etc. Last night I gave her a bath and she was very nice she let me pick her up but as soon as I took her out I couldn't pick her up agian why is that?
i have a hedgehog and not sure how to handle her i have tried everything but every time i try to pick her up she spikes and jumps does anybody know any tips to help me if so thanks i could really use the info
Should always buy a young hedgehog that is calm and that you handle first... If you get one that is years old, and mean it is hard to change them back. They are like any animal, like dogs even, if raised right by humans, they are super sweet, but if you had a dog born, and never interacted with it and left it in a cage, it would be mean too. Take him/her out of the cage and let him walk around on a short coffee table while you watch TV or a movie. The more time out with you, the better.
Does it matter what type, right know I'm using carefresh but I want to switch, I bought pine but now I see places that say it gives off toxic fumes. I have aspen snake bedding by Zoo Med from my snake, can I use that?
carefresh is great, but expensive. Aspen is best purchased in the largest quantitiy at the store. I get huge bags of it for $12.99 only. Enough to clean ALL my STO cages, hedgehog cages, mouse and rat cages! So if you have one cage only, enough for a couple months! As compared to carefresh that you probably spend close to $5 each cleaning.
they are wonderful pets. Just make sure to get a calm one from a good breeder. Don't buy one that spikes up and bites(like the mom is doing during this video a bit). Try to get one between 2 and 5 months old also.
They look like rambutan fruits. hahaha!
