Man i keep comin back to this vid for nostalgia, reminds me of the good ol'e days comin in on Highway 12 from Willmar to the cities. Great upload, appreciate it playa
Just want to say that the video looked great. Keeping the camera on the road and showing it in full screen. Now thats the way you do it. There are so many videos where they keep shifting the camera all over the place, that it gets unwatchable at times. Makes me think they are going to get into an accident any minute. Keep up the great work.
You make some really cool videos, and I really love the introductions. My family and I want to move to Minneapolis next year so the videos are cool and educational. My wife wants to move to Plymouth.
I mapped this entire drive on Open Street Map, as well as all of Hwy 169 between I-494 and I-694, and all of Hwy 100. I've mapped tons of lakes, interchanges between Interstates, and right now I'm working on mapping the St. Croix River.
Grew up in the Western Metro. Lived in Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, New Hope, Crystal, St. Louis Park, and Hopkins. It's really nice to see this video posted, because I love Minneapolis, and also because I love time lapses! Also, I visit Minneapolis during the summer and Christmas every year, so I was up there when you did that time lapse drive! Thanks for the post!
Sheesh, that part of Hwy 12 at the start is one of the weirdest sections of highway in the whole state, just two lanes but signed for 60 mph. Clearly they intend to add more lanes on the other side where the rails are right now, but then where are the rails going to go?
Actually there are no plans to add the extra lanes. The infrastructure was designed for just the one road. If they where to build an eastbound road the tracks would either follow the old luce line trail just to the south, or the overpasses would have to be rebuilt.
Minneapolis is growing fast! Its in first place for the safest city to live on in USA so no wonder why everyone wants to live here besides its nicesness.
It's scary as to how much of an observant person I am with a scaringly good memory. Pause it at 2:23. When you get off of this exit, this is where the "Ember's" is in the movie 'FARGO'. Watch the scene in the movie during which they're at the restaurant talking about the kidnapping. When they walk out to the cars, you can seethe exit signs that you see at 2:23. 'FARGO' is my favorite movie, so I'd surely remember something like this.
It was from a sample collection I found on a google index search. It was called "DJ Graesklippare Ultimate trance mix 2006". There were about 20 short songs on it. They were left unnamed so I cant be sure.
@cabasse I absolutely agree. I mean I have always thought our skyline in Chicago is the most beautiful one on the planet (not as huge as Hong Kong's or NYC's but architecturally a lot prettier), but Minneapolis' is classy. It doesn't even have to be tall in order to be beautiful. The Twin Cities has always struck me as a rather sophisticated place. Too bad it's so damn cold. (I mean Chicago cold is fine by me, but Twin Cities cold is a little too much).
I don't know about minneapolis but I guess th e sun still sets later over there than it does here as the region in this vid is closer to the equator than most of Europe!
Tomorow the sun will set at 16.40 over here. The shortest day of the year was today and from now on the days will get longer again.
@wimpie25 Yeah, Minneapolis is at about the same latitude as Torino (Northern Italy), but I find it odd that the sun set at 4:40 in Belgium while we're still having sunsets at 4:35 in Chicago, which is further south than Minneapolis.
I also find is interesting that winters in MN (and even Chicago in some cases) are significantly colder than in places as far north as Oslo or Bergen in Norway.
@AlvinHDavernport Because of the way the earth curves, the rule is "The further south you get, the earlier the sunset. The further north you get, the later the sunset." I've experienced this. Here in Illinois, the sun sets around 15 minutes before it does in Minneapolis, even though I'm 500 miles south of Minneapolis.
@Bradhahn14 Yeah, but that's in the summer--In the winter the sun is supposed to set earlier the farther north you go. So the only explanation for a wintertime sunset to be earlier in Chicago than Belgium would be the horizontal position of each place with respect to the way their respective time zone was set, I guess.
I like how you coordinate the Google Earth with the very beginning of your drive, that's really neat!
Are you planning on filming the entire Minneapolis/St. Paul area, so I can refer my subscribers who continue to request Twin Cities videos, to your YouTube page instead? :-)
I got a question, if the left lane is surrounded with a double white line when the lane toll amount says OPEN, are you allowed to cross the double white line without paying a $142 fine?
Oh okay. I thought you were referring to my poor driving habits. hehe. But yeah, I live in the south metro and they just added those double lines there too. Who knew.
There are two double white lines on Northbound and 1 on Southbound. Currently, we have one at Northbound from Cliff St. to 106th St. and 90th St. to 76th St. The Southbound is from 76th St to 86th St. (Sorry for my smartass comment before and after this parentheses) Violators crossing the double white lines OR driving on that lane without an MNPass during toll hours are subject to a fine.
Thanks. A few years ago a study found that most of them do more harm than good. So for now they just leave them blinking. Biggest waste of money ever.
I feel you on that -- the waste of taxpayer money. There are several ramp meters on the southside of I-285 that have yet to be turned on and are sitting idle, while those on the Top End are on.
To make things worse they spent 7 mil in Eagan alone building extra carpool lanes on the onramps. You can see grass growing on them and their only a couple years old.
Ive been thinking about filming the Hiawatha route for a while. Some of the trains have tinted front windows so I'll have to do some research on the schedules of when the clear windowed trains run.
Have I ever said I love the way you mark the path you take, and zoom in on the start with Google Earth? That it might be my favorite intro of all the roadgeek-style videos on here? No? Well, there you go. Now go visit some more areas of the country so we can get some neat videos! :D Although never having set foot in Minnesota, I appreciate the tour.
